Previous Game Betting Recap
On Monday night, the Houston Rockets took down the Atlanta Hawks 120-110 to improve to a perfect 4-0 on the season. Alperen Sengun had his best game of the season with 29 points, nine rebounds, nine assists, and six steals. The Rockets were +29 during his 37 minutes on the court and -19 during the 11 minutes he rested for. It was a close game in the first half with the Hawks taking a three-point lead into the break, but a big start to the fourth quarter allowed the Rockets to build a 22-point lead. A 22-2 run to build a big lead with less than five minutes to play iced the game for Houston, and the Hawks late fightback made the scoreline more respectable than it could have been. Houston’s three-point defense was once again excellent, holding the Hawks to 11-for-39 from deep, and the Rockets also had 17 more rebounds, turning those extra possessions into a victory. It was a classic Rockets win that featured hounding defense and aggressive work in the paint, keeping their perfect record alive.
From a betting perspective, we went a perfect 2-0 to move to 9-0 on the season. We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the year, as the Rockets are winning and we are smashing our picks. Our first pick was on the Houston Rockets moneyline against the Hawks, which cashed in relatively straightforward fashion. For the second pick, we took Jabari Smith Jr. to go over 19.5 points + rebounds. He finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, his most boards collected during the young season.
Rockets vs Bucks Breakdown
Tonight, the Houston Rockets (4-0) head to Milwaukee to take on the Bucks (1-3) for their first matchup of a two-game road trip. The Bucks are rebuilding after trading away Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the Rockets still cannot afford to take them lightly. Alperen Sengun and Steven Adams are both out due to injury, leaving Clint Capela as the lone remaining traditional center on their roster. Marcus Smart is also questionable with a forearm strain, leaving the Rockets shorthanded for this matchup while the Bucks have a completely clean injury report.
Milwaukee is 1-3 on the season and is expected to struggle throughout all 82 games. A playoff berth is a stretch of the imagination for the Bucks, and staying out of the relegation zone at the bottom of the standings is their primary target. The Bucks lost to the Wizards, Bulls, and 76ers to start the year, then picked up their first win of the season with a 110-102 victory over the Pacers on Monday night.
There is no replacing Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee, but the Bucks do still have a semi-competitive roster with their new arrivals from Miami. Tyler Herro is off to a great start in a Bucks uniform, averaging a team-high 23.5 PPG, with Jamie Maquez Jr. being the next-highest scorer at 17.5 PPG. Herro and Jaquez Jr. are two pieces the Bucks can now build around, and they have no shortage of motivation to succeed with their new team. One fascinating matchup tonight will be how Amen Thompson handles Tyler Herro on the defensive end of the floor. Thompson is one of the league’s best on-ball defenders, but an agile Herro may try to strand him on an island in the open court. The undersized Fred VanVleet will be glued to Ryan Rollins at point guard, leaving these two to duke it out all game long. Herro is not one to back down to a challenge, but that may be exactly what Thompson and the Rockets want with their best defender on Milwaukee’s most explosive scorer.
The Rockets will have the advantage on the outside, and in the open court, but things get a bit shaky when going into the paint. Sengun’s impact on the offensive end is immeasurable, as the Turkish big man is comfortable in the pick-and-roll, can dish the ball like few other centers can, and is also the Rockets’ leading scorer through the first four games. Steven Adams is a suitable high IQ replacement, but he is also out, leaving Clint Capela in the paint with Jabari Smith Jr. likely rotating to center when Capela needs a rest. The Bucks have two excellent centers in Myles Turner and Kel’el Ware who will be drooling at this opportunity. Turner and Ware have similar playstyles, as they both like to drift behind the arc on offense, and are real rim protectors on defense. The Rockets do a great job of gang rebounding, which will be crucial when Capela is forced to leave the paint on defense.
Rockets vs Bucks Best Bets
The Rockets come into this one as 8.5-point favorites with -320 odds on the moneyline. Even with their injuries, the Rockets are a legitimate NBA title contender, while the Bucks are just fighting to try and stay relevant. Milwaukee will have a field day on the inside, but Capela is defensively sound enough to prevent easy buckets, while the Rockets gang rebounding will allow them to stop the Bucks from getting extra possessions. The Rockets hounding defense is the difference in this matchup, so we will lay the points with Houston on the road.
For the second pick, we will take Tyler Herro to stay under 21.5 points at -105 odds. Thompson will be on Herro for most of this matchup, and I don’t see how Herro reaches this total with that matchup. The Bucks have favorable matchups elsewhere with Turner and Ware against Capela, or Jaquez Jr. against Durant, which should turn Herro into more of a passer than a scorer tonight. He’s averaging 23.5 PPG with three of his four appearances seeing him score more than this line, but this is arguably the toughest matchup in the NBA for Herro.
Finally, we will run it back with Jabari Smith Jr. to get active on the glass. Smith Jr. will need to play some minutes at center with Sengun and Adams out, which will give him lots of opportunities to hang out around the hoop and pick up loose balls. He secured six rebounds in each of his first three games this season, then erupted for 12 on Monday against the Hawks. The Bucks have allowed the most rebounds to power forwards in the league this season, and with the Rockets’ traditional centers out, Smith Jr. will be doing the dirty work all night long. We can get -115 odds on over 6.5 rebounds, and we will also sprinkle on 10+ rebounds at +450 odds.
