Previous Game Betting Recap
On Wednesday night, the Rockets improved to 5-0 on the season with a 132-100 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. A 34-14 second quarter fueled the Rockets’ 22-point halftime lead, and the Bucks never came close to making a comeback as Houston won all four quarters. Fred VanVleet had his best game of the season on the offensive end, scoring a game-high 24 points while tacking on five assists. Amen Thompson chipped in with 23 points, while Bogdan Bogdanovic provided a spark off the bench with 16 points in 15 minutes on a sizzling 4-for-5 from behind the arc. The Rockets didn’t dominate on the glass like they usually do, edging the Bucks 44-41 in rebounds, and instead relied on their three-point defense to find success. They held the Bucks to 29% from behind the arc and 39% from the floor, while Houston shot 45% from deep and 55% overall.
From a betting perspective, we had our first losing night of the season. In the player prop department, we took Jabari Smith Jr. to go over 6.5 rebounds with a 10+ sprinkle, and he finished with two. The reason for the pick was that the Bucks struggle to contain dominant power forwards, and I expected Clint Capela to start in Sengun’s absence, giving Smith Jr. a favorable matchup. Instead, Smith Jr. started at center with Tari Eason at power forward, who logged a season-high nine rebounds. We also took Tyler Herro to stay under 21.5 points, but Herro finished with 23 on a red-hot 4-for-6 from three-point range. Unlucky. We did have one bright spot with the Rockets (-8.5) on the point spread, which was a sweat-free cover.
Rockets vs Mavericks Breakdown
The Houston Rockets (5-0) take the short trip to Dallas to take on the Mavericks (3-2) in their NBA Cup opener tonight. Houston and Dallas find themselves in West Group A alongside the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, and Utah Jazz. This is a pivotal game for both teams, as a relatively wide-open group without the Western Conference favorites in the Spurs or Thunder, means either the Mavericks or Rockets could win this group. These two teams met in the season opener, with Houston prevailing 128-110 at home. Cooper Flagg’s 32 points were not enough for Dallas, as Kevin Durant and Smith Jr. put up 30 points each. The Rockets +9 rebounding advantage combined with the Mavericks’ 21 turnovers gave Houston extra possessions that they did not waste.
Dallas shook off that early loss with three wins in their next four, beating the Pacers, Heat, and Thunder by a combined 46 points. Cooper Flagg is following up his Rookie of the Year season with a strong start to his sophomore campaign, averaging 25.3 PPG with 6.8 assists on the offensive end with 2.8 steals and 1.3 blocks on defense. Flagg was hyped up to be a legitimate two-way star, and while the sample size is small this year, his play has been a big reason why the Mavericks are above .500 at this stage of the season. The biggest issue for the Mavericks this season has been staying healthy at the center position. Dereck Lively Jr. is out indefinitely after foot surgery last year while Santi Aldama has also yet to suit up this season. Daniel Gafford is a capable center, but he is still one of the worst starters in the league and the Mavericks have no depth behind him. They have the size with P.J. Washington and Flagg at forward to help on the glass, but Dallas is still vulnerable to big men down low. Luckily for the Mavericks, Houston is missing Steven Adams tonight, while Alperen Sengun is questionable after missing Wednesday’s matchup against the Bucks with a lower back injury.
Whether or not Sengun can suit up tonight will have a big impact on the Rockets offensive scheme tonight. They still managed to dominate the Bucks with Smith Jr. at center and Eason at power forward, but the return of Sengun will go a long way against a better Mavericks side. Even if the Rockets don’t have their talented big man, their advantage on the perimeter will be the difference. Houston is 5-0 this season thanks to a league-best 28.9% opponent three-point percentage, and are also a perfect 5-0 against the spread. Dallas is far from an elite three-point team, which means VanVleet and Amen Thompson will be able to once again cause havoc on the perimeter. It is no fluke that the Rockets have seen their opponents miss from deep, as they are rarely wide open and often forced shots late in the shot clock. Kyrie Irving and Max Christie are both better ball-handlers than they are pure shooters, which means Houston will once again try and limit the open triples for Dallas tonight.
For our first bet of the night, how can we do anything other than take the Rockets point spread. They are modest 6.5-point favorites on the road against the Mavericks, and it is hard to imagine them losing a relatively high-stakes NBA Cup game. Sengun is a crucial piece, and is currently questionable, but when players are upgraded from out of the previous game to questionable for the next, they usually end up playing. Either way, the Rockets defense is strong enough that they will pull away. We are not even settling for just the -110 on -6.5, as we will also take alternate spreads with +160 odds on -10.5 and +265 odds on -14.5. Point differential matters in the NBA Cup, and with the Rockets being one of the Cup favorites, they will look to keep their foot on the gas late rather than easing up early.
For our second pick, we will take Fred VanVleet to record over 1.5 steals at +150 odds. VanVleet has logged multiple steals in three of his five games this year, and the Mavericks are especially generous to opposing point guards. These plus money odds are a very generous price for VanVleet with this matchup and his history of getting active on defense.
Finally, we will look at Cooper Flagg on the offensive end. Flagg has become the focal point of the Mavericks offense, and when the lights shine brightest, I expect him to have a big game. His points + rebounds + assists prop stands out as having value since the Rockets have struggled to slow down power forwards this season, but I like his straight up assists better. Flagg’s line is at 5.5 with +100 odds on the over, a line he has cleared in three straight games. His only appearance of the season where he had fewer than six assists came against the Rockets, which is probably why we are getting such a good price. Despite having a strong overall defense, Houston has allowed the fourth-most assists to small forwards at 6.4 per game, and don’t do very well against power forwards either, a position Flagg may slide into with the Dallas injuries.
