NCAA Football Predictions: Week 1 Opening Line Report and Picks

Now that the preamble to the 2026 college football season is out of the way, we can finally turn our attention to the main body. Week 1 has arrived, and with it comes the return of the Doc's Opening Line Report, the weekly snapshot of betting openers and market sentiment that sets the stage for every wager you make. Each week begins where every bettor should begin: the openers. These numbers are the purest expression of market opinion, shaped by power ratings, returning production, transfer impact, and the always slippery intangibles that separate sharp lines from soft ones.
The 2025 campaign delivered one of the most chaotic seasons in recent memory. Seventeen head coaches were fired before the final whistle, coordinators were shuffled like playing cards, and a new coaching star emerged in Indiana's Curt Cignetti, who pulled off something not seen in 127 years by winning 16 games in a single season. It was a year defined by volatility, overcorrections, and rapid market swings, and those ripples are still visible in how oddsmakers are pricing the first slate of 2026.
Doc’s Sports offers college football expert picks for every game on our college football predictions page.
New Teams and Conference Realignments
We welcome two new programs into the FBS family. Sacramento State joins the MAC, while historic FCS powerhouse North Dakota State steps into the Mountain West. Both arrive with strong pedigrees, and both will immediately test how well their brands translate to the top level.
The Pac-12 starts its rebuild by raiding its geographic neighbor, the Mountain West. Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State all trade the mountains for the coast, giving the conference a fresh identity built on regional familiarity and competitive stability. Texas State becomes the final addition, leaving the Sun Belt to round out the league's new lineup.
After losing the core of its membership, the Mountain West responded by adding North Dakota State, Northern Illinois from the MAC, and UTEP from Conference USA. C-USA took another hit when Louisiana Tech departed for the Sun Belt, continuing the ripple effect of realignment across the Group of Five landscape.
Week 1 Handicapping Difficulties
What makes Week 1 so different from every other week in the regular season is the sheer mystery surrounding team talent. Bettors who had the foresight to grab Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza for the Heisman Trophy at 60-1 back in August were rewarded for trusting massive upside over enormous uncertainty. And while a postseason matchup between number 3 Penn State and number 6 Clemson seemed perfectly reasonable on paper, no one could have predicted it would unfold in the Pinstripe Bowl.
The other challenge with Week 1 wagering is that the lines have been posted for a while. Most openers hit the board in late July, with a few even earlier. By kickoff, much of the value in soft numbers has already been squeezed out through movement, early sharp action, and market corrections. Week 1 becomes a balancing act between trusting your preseason read and recognizing that the market has already taken its first swing.

September 3rd- Thursday
Colorado vs. Georgia Tech (-6.5/50.5) 8:00 pm ESPN
Georgia Tech should cover the six-point spread on Thursday night because they already proved the matchup last season, going into Boulder and winning 27-20 behind 320 rushing yards and a late Haynes King touchdown, and now the rematch comes to Bobby Dodd Stadium in a whiteout with the momentum of a 9-4 ranked finish under Brent Key. Colorado enters off a 3-9 season with five straight losses, new coordinators, a rebuilt offensive line, a young quarterback in Julian Lewis learning a new scheme, and a defense that allowed 30.5 points per game. Tech has its own unknowns with transfer quarterback Alberto Mendoza and a new offensive coordinator, but the run game, home field, and last year's result still tilt the matchup toward the Jackets. Most models project Tech by about nine, and early public money leans their way, making six a number they should clear.
PICK: Georgia Tech -6.5 (3-units)
September 5th- Saturday
Marshall vs. #18 Penn State (-24.5/54.5) 3:30 pm FS1
Beaver Stadium in a Stripe Out opener is a mismatch setting for a Sun Belt team coming off a 5-7 season, and that's the core reason 24.5 is within reach for Penn State even with a new staff and a rebuilt roster. Matt Campbell brought in a large Iowa State contingent that already speaks the same language, led by veteran quarterback Rocco Becht and skill players who can execute without a long install, so the Lions should find rhythm faster than a typical Year 1 reset. Marshall's best piece is returning quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson. However, he's still walking into a deeper, more physical front and a home crowd eager for a statement after last year's collapse. The Herd was blown out at Georgia as a huge underdog last season, and this trip profiles similarly, with early competitiveness fading once Penn State starts finishing drives and the defense forces turnovers. The number is big, but the expected second-half pull-away is bigger.
PICK: Penn State -24.5 (3-units)
Clemson vs. #11 LSU (-10.5/51.5) 7:30 pm ABC
Lane Kiffin's LSU debut makes 10.5 playable because the matchup favors a team stepping into a defined identity rather than one still searching for one. Kiffin rebuilt the roster with transfers who fit his tempo and spacing concepts, and Sam Leavitt gives him a quarterback who can run the system from day one. Clemson arrives with more questions than answers after a 7-6 season, still trying to stabilize a quarterback plan and still struggling to generate consistent offense away from home. The defense has pieces, especially with Sammy Brown, but long stretches of field position pressure tend to expose their thin perimeter depth and an offensive line that hasn't traveled well in years. LSU's edge comes from stacking efficient possessions, forcing Clemson into predictable downs, and gradually widening the gap as the game settles. If Clemson couldn't solve LSU at home last year, doing it in Baton Rouge with even less offensive clarity is an even steeper climb. Double digits feel like the natural landing spot.
PICK: LSU -10.5 (3-units)
