NFL survivor pools have been around long before mainstream sports betting took over. The rules are simple. Pick one team each week, and if they win, you move on. The catch? You can only pick each team once. Winning a survivor pool is incredibly difficult, as it takes the right amount of planning, some gutsy calls along the way, and a little bit of luck. Doc’s Sports will be providing free survivor pool picks all season long, ranking every matchup from most to least confident while giving an official pick and contrarian pick each week. Last year, we put together an impressive showing by surviving until Week 14 before the New Orleans Saints upset the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ending our season. That was good enough to win in some smaller survivor pools, but this year, we are going for all 18 weeks. Without further ado, here are all 16 Week 1 survivor pool picks ranked from most to least confident.

Los Angeles Chargers (-10.5) Over Arizona Cardinals

Fading the Cardinals will be a popular survivor pool strategy this season as Arizona is the odds-on favorite to finish with the worst record in the league. Jacoby Brissett is miles behind Justin Herbert in terms of big-play ability, and the Chargers are better in nearly every position on the field. A new NFL season will always bring a few Week 1 surprises, but this upset would be truly seismic to kick off these respective seasons. The Chargers' offensive line issues have been patched up in the offseason; they still have an incredible defense on the other side of the ball, and they are playing at home. There is a legitimate case for saving the Chargers for later down the road, but they really don’t have many other layup matchups like this. There is no reason to get cute in Week 1, so we will take the Chargers as our official survivor pool selection.

Detroit Lions (-7) Over New Orleans Saints

The Detroit Lions will be back with a vengeance this season, and they are a safe pick to kick off the new year. Jared Goff and the Lions have put up a staggering 33.9 PPG at home across the last two seasons, and it would take a real miracle from Tyler Shough and the Saints offense to keep up. The Lions were battered with injuries last year and understandably struggled, but a healthy Detroit side shouldn’t have any problems swatting aside New Orleans. However, the Lions have the easiest schedule in the league this year and are a team we want to keep in our back pocket for later, so I would avoid taking them in Week 1.

Jacksonville Jaguars (-7.5) Over Cleveland Browns

The Browns are a complete disaster right now with Deshaun Watson slated to start at quarterback while the Jaguars are coming off a stellar 13-4 campaign last season. Trevor Lawrence is finally developing into the quarterback he was drafted to be, and the Jaguars have benefitted as a result. A coherent defensive unit will stifle the Browns, while Cleveland’s once-dominant defensive front is handicapped without Myles Garrett leading the charge. These two teams are on opposite ends of many preseason power rankings, and a home game for Jacksonville shouldn’t have any surprises. This is a team you may want to save, but is the least valuable to keep out of the three most confident selections.

Cincinnati Bengals (-3.5) Over Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bengals are the most confident pick of the week outside of the three touchdown-plus favorites. Joe Burrow and company made a habit of starting slow over the last few seasons, but it appears as though he is as locked in as ever heading into 2026. An offensive core of Burrow throwing to Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins is arguably the best trio in the league, while Baker Mayfield just lost his favorite target, Mike Evans, in the offseason. Tampa Bay is on the precipice of a rebuild, and they will kick off the year with a Week 1 defeat.

Seattle Seahawks (-3.5) Over New England Patriots

A rematch of last year’s Super Bowl kicks off the season, and taking Seattle isn’t a bad pick if you want a sweat-free rest of Week 1. The Seahawks defense is better than New England’s, Sam Darnold has proven he can lead a competent offense, and this one goes down in Seattle. There will be no Super Bowl hangover for Seattle against an overrated Patriots side, which makes taking the Seahawks an excellent choice.

Dallas Cowboys (-2.5) Over New York Giants

I usually don’t like taking road teams in divisional matchups for survivor pools, but the Cowboys are a decent choice this week. New York is looking to start their next chapter with John Harbaugh at the helm, but they won’t have immediate success from an offense without many reps together. Meanwhile, the Cowboys have a reliable offensive unit that almost always puts up points in primetime. The Giants will get better as the season goes on, but Dallas is the way to go in this one.

Philadelphia Eagles (-5.5) Over Washington Commanders

The Philadelphia Eagles could easily go 14-3 this year, but they could also finish below .500. They are a sizable favorite, but not my top selection in terms of confidence. The front office has been able to put band-aids over bullet holes regarding their salary cap situation, keeping this side competitive. Jalen Hurts will use his physicality to manhandle Washington, who is dealing with a long list of injuries heading into the season. Philadelphia is the better team on the defensive side of the ball, and this could be one of the few safe times to use them if their season goes downhill otherwise. All in all, this one screams upset, so I would rather stay away.

Las Vegas Raiders (-3.5) Over Miami Dolphins

The Raiders will be a popular choice this week against the Dolphins, as they are unlikely to be a team we use later this season. While I do expect them to win, it is hard to put our survivor pool life in the hands of Kirk Cousins in Week 1. Cousins had a rough year with Atlanta last season, and this Raiders offense still has lots to prove heading into 2026. However, they are still head and shoulders better than the Dolphins. Miami has more than half of their cap space tied up in dead money, making it hard to envision many victories this year. Las Vegas is an excellent choice with the rest of the season in mind, but the most important thing is surviving this week, so our official pick will stay on the Chargers.

Houston Texans (+1.5) Over Buffalo Bills

If you want a contrarian pick this week, taking the Texans at home over the Bills is a great choice. Houston’s defense is one of the best in the league, as they will terrorize Josh Allen and the Bills from the first snap. C.J. Stroud and the Texans offense completely fell apart down the stretch last season, but they are healthy and due for some positive regression. It is always scary taking an underdog in a survivor pool, but if you want to cheer for upsets in Week 1, Houston is a justifiable option.

Baltimore Ravens (-3.5) Over Indianapolis Colts

There will be better opportunities to use the Ravens, but they are still one of the last viable options for Week 1. Baltimore fell short of a playoff berth last year thanks to a slow start, and they will be desperate to avoid the same fate this year. In the wake of Harbaugh’s departure, Baltimore’s veterans will be giving a little extra on the field to solidify their spot in the rotation. Indianapolis fell off a cliff in the second half of last season, and even a healthy Daniel Jones will be unable to lead them to victory.

Tennessee Titans (-1.5) Over New York Jets

It is never a bad idea to fade the New York Jets in a survivor pool. End of story. The Jets have been at the bottom of the standings for more than a decade, and Geno Smith will not be their savior at quarterback. The Titans had a crafty offseason and are ready to emerge from their rebuild, and it starts with a Week 1 win over the Jets.

Pittsburgh Steelers (-3.5) Over Atlanta Falcons

The Steelers can’t be too confident with a 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers at the helm, but they should start the year with a Week 1 victory. The Falcons are already dealing with injuries and suspension issues to start the year, while the Steelers are as healthy as they will be all season. I like some of the other field goal favorites better, but if you wanna use up an unimpressive Steelers side in Week 1, this isn’t a terrible spot.

Kansas City Chiefs (-2.5) Over Denver Broncos

This one could go either way, but I will side with the Chiefs if forced to pick. Both Bo Nix and Patrick Mahomes are returning from injury after a long offseason, giving Kansas City an edge at quarterback. The Chiefs defense has been rejuvenated with summer signings, and they will remind Denver that they are still a threat in the AFC West. However, this is a risky game to target regardless of the side you are on, so I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Carolina Panthers (+2.5) Over Chicago Bears

The Bears needed unsustainable fourth-quarter comebacks combined with a string of turnover luck to go 12-5 last year, and that will not happen again. Chicago is in for a rude awakening against this Carolina defense in Week 1, and I expect the outright upset. Bryce Young’s floor has been raised after another promising season, and Carolina will pull off the minor upset in a low-scoring home win.

Minnesota Vikings (-1.5) Over Green Bay Packers

The NFC North has been difficult to predict, and this game is no exception. The Vikings have a stellar defense with an unproven offense, while the Packers have the opposite problem with Micah Parsons on the sidelines. There are better options further up the list.

Los Angeles Rams (-3.5) Over San Francisco 49ers

This game is in Australia, so who knows how each team will react, and there is no reason to take either of these sides in Week 1. The Rams are the Super Bowl favorites and will be big favorites multiple times this year, while the 49ers' lingering injury issues make them a better late-season candidate.
