Brent Venables is returning most of their offense from a season ago, while the defense should be strong once again. Venables has reached the first milestone, but now he is looking to lengthen his stay in Norman by building a consistent playoff-caliber roster. John Mateer has taken the offseason seriously, and he has shown flashes of excellence, and he needs to show that on the field as he could really elevate this offense and make the Sooners a more complete team. The excuses are gone. They cracked the code to reach the playoffs, now they need to show the rest of the nation that they are a threat to do that year in and year out.

Oklahoma Sooners Summary of Last Season

The Oklahoma Sooners put together a solid regular season and earned a spot in the College Football Playoff. They opened up the season with a five-game winning streak where they took down two ranked teams in Michigan and Auburn. They hit a road bump when they met Texas, losing 23-6. They would also lose two weeks later against Ole Miss. After that, they finished the season with a four-game winning streak taking down three more ranked opponents in Tennessee and Alabama on the road, and Missouri at home. After posting a solid 10-2 record in the regular season, they were able to secure the 8-Seed in the playoffs. Unfortunately, they were not able to beat Alabama twice, losing the rematch 34-24 and they went home packing.

The Sooners offense was one of the worst in the conference last season. They ranked 12th in the SEC in YPG (354.3) and 12th in PPG (26.2). John Mateer led the way with a modest 2,885 passing yards, and he completed 62.2% of his passes. His TD/INT ratio was awful, as he threw 14 touchdowns while throwing 11 interceptions. He did finish second on the team in rushing, adding 431 yards on the ground and added eight rushing touchdowns. Tory Blaylock led the team with 480 rushing yards, while backup Xavier Robinson added 421 rushing yards. Both Blaylock and Robinson recorded four rushing touchdowns. Isaiah Sategna III led the team with 965 receiving yards, and he added eight receiving touchdowns. Deion Burks recorded 620 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns, while Jaren Kanak finished third on the team with 533 receiving yards.

As for the Oklahoma defense, they were the real reason they made the playoffs. The Sooners ranked sixth in the country in YPG allowed, holding opponents to just 272.5 YPG. They also held opponents to just 15.5 PPG. Kip Lewis led the team with 76 tackles, and he also recorded four sacks, four pass deflections, and he forced a fumble. Owen Heinecke finished with 74 tackles, three sacks, four pass deflections, and also forced a fumble. Peyton Bowen, Eli Bowen, and Jacobe Johnson tied for the team lead with two interceptions. Taylor Wein led the Sooners defense with seven sacks and R Mason Thomas finished second with 6.5 sacks.  

2026 Oklahoma Sooners Football Key Additions/Losses

The Sooners rank 16th in the country in returning production. They bring back 75% of their offensive production, which ranks third in the country. On defense, the strength of last year’s team, they rank just 57th with 55% returning production. Thomas was drafted in the second round, and he was the first of seven Sooners that would hear their name called during the draft. He was followed by offensive lineman Febechi Nwaiwu (fourth round), defensive lineman Gracen Halton (fourth round), linebacker Kendal Daniels (fourth round), safety Robert Spears-Jennings (seventh round), Kanak (seventh round), and Burks (seventh round). They also had some key departures in linebackers Sammy Omosigho who transferred to UCLA and Kobie McKinzie who transferred to Northwestern. They also lost wide receiver JV Gibson to Cincinnati.

As for the additions, the Sooners recorded a transfer portal class that ranked 17th in the country. Their biggest addition was wide receiver Parker Livingstone who came over from rival Texas. Their offense also added offensive tackle E’Marion Harris (Arkansas), tight end Hayden Hansen (Florida), and wide receiver Trell Harris (Virginia). They also brought linebacker Cole Sullivan (Michigan) to fill a hole on the defense.

2026 Oklahoma Sooners Football Schedule Breakdown

Oklahoma has been awarded one of the toughest schedules in the country after their playoff appearance last season. Not only has the SEC added another conference game to the schedule, but the Sooners have a tough nonconference opponent. While they open the season with a nice tune-up game against UTEP, they will then travel to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan. They will return home to face New Mexico before travelling to Athens, Georgia to wrap up September with a road game against Georgia. Unfortunately for the Sooners, they could have two losses in September. After a Bye Week, they clash with Texas before facing a much easier October lineup that features home games against Kentucky and South Carolina, and a road game to Mississippi State. They end the regular season with two road games at Florida and Missouri with two home contests against Ole Miss and Texas A&M sandwiched between them.

Can John Mateer really live up to the hype?

Mateer had gone viral for his look after seemingly hitting the weights in a big way this offseason. He needs to pair that with some improvement on the field as well. Mateer was once touted as one of the best athletes in the country. He has legs that can bail him out under pressure or when facing good coverage, now he just needs to show the country he can be the gunslinger everyone thinks he can be. If he can limit the turnovers, he could lead this offense to new heights this season.

Is Oklahoma the strongest Dark Horse on the market?

No. Their schedule is way too hard. Oklahoma has been floating around preseason shows as one of the best dark horse selections heading into the new season. A successful dark horse would not only reach the playoffs, but also win a national championship. Oklahoma may have a tough time reaching the playoffs again this season with their schedule. Two early road games in two hostile environments could lead to two defeating losses that could hinder their playoff chances. While two losses alone won’t eliminate them from contention, they still have to be nearly perfect for the remaining eight games that include Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Texas, and a sneaky road game against Mississippi State. Oklahoma will be a strong team, but the bottom could fall out pretty quick in route to a four-loss season.

I am going to take the over on the win total, but that is as far as I am reaching on Oklahoma this season. Their defense may not be as strong as it was a season ago, and while the offense is returning a lot, they were severely underwhelming last season. The two early road trips in September is probably the toughest September of anyone in the country, and their performance in those two games could set the tone for the remainder of the season. Then you have to play three more playoff contenders in Texas, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M. Oklahoma will be the most talented team to miss the playoffs this season.
