After piecing together one of the most complete teams and seasons in their program’s history, the Ole Miss Rebels fumbled it all away when it mattered most. It is hard to completely blame the Rebels as they were completely abandoned by their head coach, and many of their other coaches, right before the playoffs began. Looking ahead to this season, all Rebels stakeholders have circled their Week 3 matchup against the LSU Tigers and Lane Kiffin. Though it is early, the Rebels season could be defined by how well they handle this game. Trinidad Chambliss is back after he was granted another season, and the Rebels also reloaded in the transfer portal. Now it remains to be seen as to whether or not Pete Golding is the guy that can keep this program in the playoff picture.

Ole Miss Rebels Summary of Last Season

The Ole Miss Rebels put together one of the most complete seasons of an underdog labeled team in perhaps the history of college football. They posted an 11-1 regular season that included big wins against LSU and Oklahoma, and they clinched a spot in the College Football Playoff. They dominated their opening-round matchup against Tulane and avenged their lone regular season loss by eliminating Georgia in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, their season ended after their big win against Georgia as they were unable to fend off Miami’s big second half. The Rebels entered the playoffs with a short-handed coaching staff and were one defensive stop away from reaching the National Championship.

Ole Miss had the second-best offense in the country in terms of YPG, as they averaged 489.7 YPG, behind only Tulane. They ranked 10th in the country in scoring, averaging 36.9 PPG. Trinidad Chambliss emerged as the starting quarterback after filling in for Austin Simmons. Chambliss threw for 3,937 yards, completing over 66% of his passes, and totaling 22 passing touchdowns and just three interceptions. He also added another 527 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. Kewan Lacy also broke out onto the scene, emerging as a top tier running back, as he recorded 1,567 rushing yards and 24 rushing touchdowns. As for the receivers, the Rebels had a lot of weapons. They had six different receivers record more than 600 receiving yards. Harrison Wallace III led the way with 934 receiving yards, and he was followed by De’Zhaun Stribling (811), Deuce Alexander (684), Cayden Lee (635), and Dae’Quan Wright (635). Stribling led the way with six receiving touchdowns, and he was followed by Wright (five), and Wallace (four).

As for the Rebels defense, they ranked towards the middle of the SEC. They held opponents to 348 YPG and 21.1 PPG. TJ Dottery led the team with 98 tackles while also recording 1.5 sacks, two pass deflections, and two forced fumbles. He was followed by Suntarine Perkins who finished with 81 tackles, 4.5 sacks, five pass deflections, one interception, and three forced fumbles. Princewill Umanmielen led the team with nine sacks, and he also added an interception. Kam Franklin and Will Echoles were tied for second on the team with five sacks. Wydett Williams Jr. led the team with nine pass deflections and three interceptions, and he finished third on the team with 73 tackles.

The Rebels rank 28th in returning production despite facing a lot of loss. They lost Kiffin and some other important coaches to LSU. The bulk of their departures came via the transfer portal as they only had two players drafted last season. Stribling was drafted in the second round by the San Francisco 49ers, and offensive tackle Jayden Williams was drafted in the seventh round by the Arizona Cardinals. Their biggest loss was edge rusher Umanmielen who followed Kiffin to LSU. They also lost Simmons and Lee to Missouri, interior offensive lineman Devin Harper (LSU), Dottery (LSU), wide receiver Winston Watkins Jr. (LSU), and edge rusher Da’Shawn Womack (Auburn).

Despite the coaching change and the portal losses, Ole Miss has done a great job adding talent in the portal in order to maintain playoff relevance. They added wide receiver Darrell Gill Jr. (Syracuse), offensive tackle Carius Curne (LSU), quarterback Deuce Knight (Auburn), and wide receiver Horatio Fields (Auburn) to reload the offense around Chambliss and Lacy. On defense, they added linebacker Keaton Thomas (Baylor), safety Edwin Joseph (Florida State), edge rusher Blake Purchase (Oregon), defensive lineman Michai Boireau (Florida), edge rusher Jordan Renaud (Alabama), cornerback Jalyn Crawford (Auburn), defensive lineman Jehiem Oatis (Colorado), and linebacker Luke Ferrelli (California).

2026 Ole Miss Rebels Football Schedule Breakdown

The Rebels have one of the toughest schedules in the country. They open the season playing Louisville in Nashville and then take on Charlotte in Week 2. That game is a solid tune-up game as they will then play host to Kiffin and the enemy LSU Tigers. After that momentous game, they have back-to-back road games at Florida and Vanderbilt with a bye week sandwiched in the middle. They will then play their final seven games on the schedule, leaving Oxford just twice. Their final two road games include Texas and Oklahoma, while their other home games are Missouri, Auburn, Georgia, Wofford, and Mississippi State. Aside from the Georgia game, Ole Miss should be favorites to win all their other home games, but those road games against the Longhorns and Sooners are going to be incredibly tough games as well. Ole Miss will likely need to pick up at least one win against the likes of Georgia, Texas, or Oklahoma (while winning the others) to secure a playoff spot.

Can they get over Kiffin?

It is no secret, Kiffin is going to get an incredibly loud reception when he takes the field at Ole Miss, this time in LSU gear. However, he deserves the boos after he completely abandoned his team right before a deep playoff run. Not only did he take other coaches with him, after the season ended, he took some of the Rebels key pieces from last year’s squad. He and the Tigers are a major villain in college football this season, and the Rebels not only have to beat them in Week 3, but they also have to get over it and move on to take care of the rest of their schedule.

Is Ole Miss still worth your money despite all the change?

Short answer, yes. The Rebels will still be a profitable team this season. In fact, they may be one of the most highly motivated teams in the country, making that +950 to win the conference a nice flier. Their schedule is tough, but they have some elite weapons on both sides of the ball, and Golding will do a fine job leading this team. Their schedule is tough, but the Rebels will be in the playoff mix and they will be an elite team once again this season, despite the possible Kiffin hangover.

2026 Ole Miss Rebels Football Predictions:

I like the Rebels to hit the over on the win total (8.5), and I like them to compete for a spot in the conference championship and then win some more games in the playoffs. I am not ready to label this team as a championship contender. However, they are being underhyped and overshadowed by the Kiffin saga. Ole Miss has a 9-3 floor, and it isn’t totally out of this world to see them sneak away with just one loss during the regular season. Do not underestimate this team. They added some solid pieces in the transfer portal, and they return a lot of their elite players from last year, who want nothing more to win a national championship to throw in their old coaches’ face. Do not sleep on the Rebels.
