However, Mike Elko and his squad’s first playoff appearance was short-lived as they were upset by the 10-seed Miami Hurricanes. Now, the Aggies are looking to shake off some of the inconsistencies that limited them down the stretch and win the SEC and the National Championship. Marcel Reed will be a key player in any improvement, and he has what it takes to piece together a Heisman season if he can avoid the big game mistakes. College Station finally saw the Aggies break through that playoff barrier, now they want to see whether or not Elko can bring a championship home to 12th Man.

Texas A&M Aggies Summary of Last Season

Texas A&M put together a perfect 11-0 start to the regular season a year ago. They picked up big road wins against ranked opponents in Notre Dame, LSU, and Missouri. They also played their fair share of close games, with four of their regular season games being one-possession games. Unfortunately for the Aggies, their perfect start was upended by a two-game losing streak to close out the season. They lost to the Texas Longhorns in their regular season finale (27-17) and then they fell to the Miami Hurricanes 10-3 in the first round of the College Football Playoff.

The Aggies had one of the best offenses in the SEC last season. They averaged 444.5 YPG and 33.8 PPG. Reed led the team with 3,169 passing yards while completing 62.1% of his passes, and he added 25 passing touchdowns. Reed added another six rushing touchdowns with 493 rushing yards. Ruben Owens II led the team with 639 rushing yards on 119 carries, and he finished second on the team with five rushing touchdowns. Le’Veon Moss finished third on the team in rushing yards with 404 yards on 77 carries, though he was tied with Reed for the team lead with six rushing touchdowns. KC Concepcion and Mario Craver formed a dynamic duo for Reed. They both recorded over 900 yards receiving, while Concepion tallied nine receiving touchdowns and Craver recorded four. Ashton Bethel-Roman finished third in receiving yards with 503, and he finished with five receiving touchdowns.

As for the Texas A&M defense, they finished fourth in the conference in yards allowed per game (307.4) and they allowed just 21 PPG. Taurean York led the team with 72 tackles while also adding one sack and three pass deflections. Marcus Ratcliffe and Dalton Brooks finished with 66 and 62 tackles from the safety position. Cashius Howell led the team with 11.5 sacks, and he also added six pass deflections and a forced fumble. Dayon Hayes (4.5) and Daymion Sanford (3.5) finished second and third on the team in sacks. Will Lee II led the team with nine pass deflections, while Brooks, Sanford, and Scooby Williams recorded the only three interceptions for the Aggies last season.

The Aggies rank 14th in returning production, bringing back 65% of last year’s production. However, they did lose some big names. Concepion headlined a big draft class, that featured 10 Aggies. He was drafted in the first round and was followed by interior offensive lineman Chase Bisontis, Howell, and tight end Nate Boerkircher who were all drafted in the second round. Defensive lineman Tyler Onyedim and Albert Regis as well as offensive tackle Trey Zuhn III were taken in the third round. The rest of the draft class included Lee (fourth round), offensive tackle Dametrious Crownover (sixth round), and interior offensive lineman Ar’maj Reed-Adams (seventh round). They also lost tight end Theo Melin Ohrstrom (SMU), defensive lineman Dealyn Evans (Mississippi State), and edge rusher Rylan Kennedy (Florida State) to the transfer portal.

Despite the losses, the returning production is strong, and they added some strong transfers. The transfer class is headlined by cornerback Rickey Gibson III from Tennessee. The defense also reloaded by notable transfers in edge rusher Anto Saka (Northwestern), safety Tawfiq Byard (Colorado), and defensive linemen Angelo McCullom (Illinois) and CJ Mims (UNC). The offense also added wide receiver Isaiah Horton (Alabama), offensive tackles Wilkin Formby (Alabama) and Tyree Adams (LSU), and interior offensive lineman Coen Echols (LSU).

2026 Texas A&M Aggies Football Schedule Breakdown

The Aggies have a favorable schedule this year despite the SEC adding an extra conference game. They begin the season with three straight home games against Missouri State, Arizona State, and Kentucky. They’ll have their first test in Week 4 as they travel to LSU to take on the Kiffin-led Tigers. In October, they face Arkansas and The Citadel at home, and they travel to Missouri and Alabama. After a bye week to end October, they finish the season with a trip to South Carolina, a home game against Tennessee, a road game against Oklahoma, and they host the Longhorns in their season finale. Aside from the road trips to LSU and Alabama, the Aggies first two-thirds of the schedule is rather kind to them. However, how they play down the stretch will determine whether or not they are able to secure another playoff spot.

Does Marcel Reed take the next step?

Reed had a solid season last year, filling up the stat sheet thanks to his dynamic abilities. However, in the two biggest games of the season, he crumbled under pressure. In their only two losses of the entire season, to Texas and Miami, Reed averaged just 208.5 passing yards, recorded no touchdowns, and threw two interceptions in each game. He was a bit turnover happy as a whole, throwing 12 interceptions, but his production really took a step down against the best teams on their schedule. In order for the Aggies to return to the playoffs and compete for a title, Reed is going to have to clean up the turnovers and be ready to play against the big boys.

Are the Aggies built to win the SEC?

Reed does bring a lot of game experience to the mix for the Aggies, and there is no doubt that the Texas A&M faithful have loaded up that NIL budget to provide incredible talent and depth to this team. However, the Aggies still have to step up against the toughest teams on their schedule. They need to get off to a hot start and win some games at the end of the season in order to cement themselves in the playoff picture, and even a possible SEC Championship game appearance. Yes, the Aggies are built to win. Now it’s time for Elko to prove he is the coach that can get them to the championship.

Take the over on the win total (8.5), throw some couch change on Reed winning the Heisman, and take a little stock in a SEC Championship for the Aggies. They have a strong chance of putting together a 7-0 start to the season, which would mean they would only need to win two of their final five games to hit the over, and winning just three of those final five games would likely result in a conference championship birth, especially if they can take out the Longhorns in the season finale. The Aggies have the experience, and the expectation is for Texas A&M to return to the playoffs. They are a top tier SEC team this season.
