College Basketball Betting: Hot or Not handicapping Report
by David Schwab - 1/3/2012
The New Year marks the start of conference play for all the teams in both the major and mid-majors as they continue their push towards this March’s NCAA Tournament. Over the first two months of the season we have seen a few teams already emerge as legitimate contenders for this year’s national title, and we have witnessed a few other high-profile programs struggle to find their way.
College Basketball Picks: Ohio State at Indiana Odds and Predictions

I was totally prepared to preview Saturday’s noon CBS game between Top-5 rivals Kentucky and Louisville – but then the Cardinals went and suffered their first loss of the season, falling by three at home to Georgetown on Wednesday (no shame in that, the Hoyas are good). To the good folks of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, that didn’t lessen Saturday’s game a bit, but it really doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things as it’s a nonconference affair.
College Basketball Handicapping: Teams That Could Struggle In Conference
by T.O. Whenham - 12/29/2011
As we turn the corner from nonconference play to the conference season in college basketball we start to deal with massive expectations for some teams. Teams have played enough games that they can have a pretty impressive record amassed if they have gotten off to a good start.

We’re in between Christmas and the New Year, and early January always means one thing: conference-dominated college basketball betting begins. The complexity of college basketball handicapping will take a big of a change as leagues open their schedules and regional rivalries will be front-and-center in the sport for the next two months.

The nonconference portion of this year’s men’s college basketball schedule continues to wrap up as we close out 2011 and get ready for conference play in the New Year. Over the past two months, a few teams have emerged as legitimate contenders for this year’s national title, while a few other high-profile programs have proven to be pretenders with their play on the court.
Sports Handicapping Tips: How to Bet Conference Play in College Basketball
by T.O. Whenham - 12/22/2011
When the college basketball schedule shifts from nonconference play to the conference season bettors need to shift their thinking as well. The fundamentals of successful betting are still the same -- it’s still the team that scores more points that wins, after all. There are some key differences between the two parts of the schedule, though, and the more successful college basketball handicappers will recognize those differences and find ways to exploit them. Here are five key shifts to focus on:

Two weeks ago it was Indiana on the outside of the Top 25 looking in. That was until the unranked Hoosiers sprung an impressive upset and knocked off top-ranked Kentucky in their home gym. The Hoosiers are unranked no longer.
College Basketball Betting: Value Teams
by T.O. Whenham - 12/21/2011
We are almost into conference play in college basketball. A couple of smaller conferences have already started. This is the time that more bettors start to pay attention to college basketball as the season is well underway and college football is winding down.
College Basketball Betting: Hot or Not handicapping Report

There was a lull in the action last week in men’s college basketball as many of the teams had a light schedule due to end of the semester finals. There were no major shake-ups in the top 10, but No.9 Xavier did lose to Oral Roberts, 64-42, this past Sunday as a 5.5-point home favorite after a good portion of its starting lineup was suspended for the game as a result of a post-game brawl with Cincinnati the week before.
College Basketball Picks: Syracuse at NC State Odds and Predictions

That’s 4-for-4 folks! I have previewed four college basketball games so far this season and have hit on the side in all four – the last was UConn’s 67-53 victory over Harvard on Dec. 8. I also hit on the total, so it’s been a very productive start to the season.

We have less than two weeks until Christmas and the college basketball season is beginning to shape up nicely. There’s no secret that for college athletics, basketball included, the media focuses a lot of their attention on the big boys: the Top 10 and the true National Championship contenders. That’s all well and good, but let’s not forget that this sport has over 300 D-I schools competing week in and week out, and any one of them can be used to turn a profit.

Last week’s action should bring about a major shake up at the top of the men’s college basketball rankings with losses by both No.1 Kentucky and No.2 Ohio State. The Wildcats were stunned by Indiana, 73-72, as 5.5-point home favorites and the Buckeyes, with Jared Sullinger still out of the lineup, fell to No.13 Kansas, 76-67, as 1.5-point road underdogs on college basketball odds.
Weekend College Basketball Betting Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 12/9/2011
Last weekend we were treated to a potential Final Four matchup when North Carolina trekked to Lexington to take on No. 1 Kentucky. The game didn’t disappoint, as the precocious Wildcats held on for a 73-72 win to solidify their position on the top of the college basketball mountain.
College Basketball Picks: Harvard at UConn Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 12/7/2011
There might be some more nationally prominent college basketball games later this week worth previewing than Thursday night’s Harvard-UConn game – Saturday’s Ohio State-Kansas or Kentucky-Indiana matchups, for example – but this is the first time I certainly have had occasion to preview a game involving an Ivy League school.

The calendar has turned the page to December for the 2011-12 men’s college basketball season as most teams continue to play out the nonconference portion of their college basketball schedule over the next few weeks. While it remains far too early to make any hard and fast conclusions about any of the teams, we have seen a few get off to fast and profitable start, while others have just been huge drains on the wallet so far.
NCAA Tournament Field Predictions and Projections, December 1

If you want a tip on how to handicapping college basketball there are dozens of insights I can give you: always bet against the public in smaller conferences, don’t be afraid of some road favorites, stay away from teams with bad point guards or shaky bench coaches, etc. But one tip that I would give out to a college basketball handicapper is to always keep the big picture in mind.
College Basketball Picks: Duke at Ohio State Odds and Predictions

Originally I was pondering previewing Wednesday’s Wisconsin-North Carolina matchup in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge as the NCAA basketball early-week top game, but the former top-ranked Heels’ upset loss to UNLV over the weekend made the decision easy:

The 2011-12 men’s college basketball schedule wraps-up its first month of play this week. While it is way too early to make any hard and fast conclusions about any of the teams, we have seen a few get off to a lightning-quick start both on the court and against the spread, while few other have already been a huge drain on the wallet.
College Basketball Picks: Duke vs. Kansas Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 11/23/2011
There is no college football on Wednesday night to bet on, but there is a nice NCAA basketball warm-up from the Maui Invitational before some great Thanksgiving Day football action: Hoops superpowers No. 6 Duke and No. 14 Kansas meet tonight at 10 p.m. Eastern on ESPN in the final of the holiday tournament from Hawaii.
College Basketball Handicapping: Off-the-Radar Mid-Majors
by T.O. Whenham - 11/18/2011
The best part of the NCAA Tournament every year is seeing the teams from mid-majors that toil well out of the spotlight most of the year get a chance to shine. When they turn some heads it always adds a ton of buzz to the event.
