Doc’s Sports offers NFL expert picks for every game on our NFL predictions page.
Travis Kelce has more receptions than Ja Morant assists (+185)
Ja Morant has taken a massive step forward as a passer this season, as he is averaging a career-high 8.3 assists. Morant and the Grizzlies will be facing off with the Celtics at 2 p.m. EST on Sunday. Boston leads the NBA in defensive rating. They are effective at preventing dribble penetration and kick outs, which is where Morant gets the bulk of these stats.
On the other hand, Travis Kelce will surely be Patrick Mahomes' top target considering the banged-up wide receiving corps and Kelce’s overall dominance. His 110 receptions this season led the Chiefs and was third across the entire NFL. This trend has continued in the postseason, as Kelce has tallied 21 receptions in the two playoff games thus far. With coverage linebacker looking to be the lone weak spot in the stellar Eagles defense, expect the All-Pro to do some damage and eclipse Morant’s assist total.
Jalen Hurts more rushing yards than LeBron James points, rebounds, and assists (-120)
After recently setting the NBA’s all-time scoring record and receiving some much-needed reinforcements via trade, expectations have reset for LeBron James and the Lakers. They are set to face off with the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. EST. On the season, he is averaging just under 46 combined points, rebounds, and assists per game.
This is a low bar for Hurts to clear, as he has averaged 50.7 rushing yards per game, including tallying 157 in Week 12. His legs and arms are equally important to the Eagles' offense, and he has had nine or more rush attempts in 13 of the 17 games he suited up for this season. While Philadelphia has limited the hits on Hurts since he returned from his shoulder injury, all precautions will be off for the Super Bowl. His dynamic ability to run with the ball is a major weapon, and the Eagles will look to utilize it. Expect Hurts to be in the running for leading the Eagles in rushing yards and eclipse James’ statistical total by a comfortable margin.
AJ Brown longer reception (+1.5) (-130) over Philadelphia Flyers' total saves
While one Philadelphia team is competing for a championship, one is far from it. The 21-21-9 Flyers will host the Seattle Kraken (29-16-15) at 1:00 p.m. EST on Sunday. The Flyers are averaging 27 saves per game on the season, and they are facing off with a Kraken team that ranks 26th in the NHL in shots on goal.
In contrast, AJ Brown has had a reception of 29 yards or longer in 12 of the 17 regular season games. He broke the Eagles' franchise record for receiving yards this season and has a favorable matchup against the Kansas City corners, who have struggled against physical wideouts this year. Brown has not had a strong postseason thus far, but much of this has been due to the Eagles holding a lead in both games. Look for him to be very involved in the passing game and have a few big-play opportunities. Eclipsing the Flyers’ save total should be well within his wheelhouse, as his game-changing ability will be vital to the Eagles' offense.
James Harden more made threes than Marques Valdes-Scantling receptions (-115)
There has been a bit of a James Harden resurgence this season. The Sixers' point guard is leading the NBA in assists and averaging 21.1 points, 10.9 assists, and 6.3 rebounds as a whole. He also has taken some strides forward as a scorer of late and is averaging 2.8 made three-pointers per game on 7.2 attempts. He has made three or more three-pointers in five of his last seven games, including six threes against the Magic last week. As the Sixers face off with the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday night at 6 p.m. EST, look for Harden to further impose some revenge with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving no longer on the Brooklyn roster.
While he is a boom-or-bust kind of player, and the Chiefs are banged up at the receiver position, this is a difficult Philadelphia Eagles defense. They allowed the fewest yards through the air in the NFL this season and the second-fewest yards overall. Valdes-Scantling has been held to two or fewer catches nine times this season, including one of the two postseason games. Expect the Eagles defense to get the better of him and for him to struggle to make much of an impact.
AJ Brown receiving yards (-4.5) over Temple (College Hoops) total points (-115)
Temple basketball is having a fairly impressive season. They sit at 14-11, with some notable wins over #1 Houston and #16 Villanova. However, they are averaging just 65.8 points per game on the season. They are set to square off with Memphis at 12 p.m. EST. The Tigers are averaging 73 points per game to opponents.
Expect a big game from AJ Brown and for him to be in the vicinity of a 100+ yard performance. He has averaged 88 yards per game through the air this season and has a favorable matchup against the Chiefs' corners. After a slow start to the playoffs in two games that the Eagles did not utilize the passing attack much, it should be expected to be a much different story in the Super Bowl. Count on Brown to have a big day and record a receiving total far out of reach of Temple basketball.
