Mavericks at Clippers Picks and NBA Betting Odds
by Dave Schwab - 1/8/2013
The Dallas Mavericks will try and spin out of a severe nose dive this Wednesday night when they face the Los Angeles Clippers at the Staples Center in a battle between two Western Conference teams clearly headed in opposite directions. The game is set to tip off at 10:30 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
It has been rough sledding for Dallas over the past few weeks with just one straight up win in its last 10 games. The team’s current losing streak reached three games with a 100-94 loss to Utah this past Monday as a five-point underdog on the road. The Mavericks are now 13-22 SU (16-19 against the spread) on the year and a dreadful 5-15 SU (10-10 ATS) on the road. The total has gone “over” in five of their last eight games.
Los Angeles snapped a rare two-game losing streak with back-to-back victories over the Lakers and Golden State in its last two games. This followed an impressive 17-game winning streak that has the team 27-8 SU and leading the Warriors in the Pacific Division by four games. The Clippers are 22-13 ATS this season and a profitable 15-5 ATS at home. The total has gone over in five of their last six games.
Mavericks vs. Clippers Betting Storylines
The much-anticipated return of Dirk Nowitzki to the Mavericks lineup after missing most of the season recovering from a knee injury has done little to turn the team’s season around. He is averaging 12.5 points a game and shooting over 43 percent from both the field and three-point range, but his team does not know how to finish games and is starting to forget how to win.
Dallas is ranked 10th in the NBA in scoring with an average of 98.6 points a game, but it is also ranked 28th in points allowed and 21st in rebounds. OJ Mayo leads the team in scoring with 18.3 points, and Shawn Marion is pulling down an average of 8.3 rebounds a game. However, despite the overall talent that is still on the roster, the Mavericks continue to struggle to play as a cohesive team.
The Clippers, on the other hand, are flying high through the first third of the regular season. Chris Paul and Blake Griffin will always be front and center as human highlight reels for ESPN, but the entire team is playing at a high level with 101.9 points a game on offense to complement a defense that is ranked fourth in the league in points allowed. LA also does a great job at moving the ball around, with seven different players averaging at least nine point a game. The team is ranked second in the NBA in assists with 23.7 a game.
This kind of teamwork has not only led to a fast start in the standings, but it has clearly established the Clippers as a legitimate threat to Oklahoma City’s quest to get back to the NBA Finals this season. During their recent 17-game winning streak, LA won 12 of those games by double-digits, which is just pure dominance all the way around.
Mavericks vs. Clippers NBA Betting Odds and Trends
The opening line on BetOnline has the Clippers as 11-point home favorites with the total line set at 200.5.
The Mavericks are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games against the Pacific Division and 1-5 ATS in their last six games playing on one day’s rest. The total has gone over in four of their last five road games.
The Clippers are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games against the Southwest Division and 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games at home. The total has gone over in four of the last five home games.
Head-to-head, the favorite is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings, and the total has stayed under in 12 of the last 17 games in Los Angeles. The Clippers won the first meeting this season 112-90 as 8.5-point favorite at home with the total going over the 200.5-point line.
Mavericks vs. Clippers Picks and Betting Predictions
One concern for the Clippers in Wednesday’s contest is the loss of Jamal Crawford with a foot injury, but even with their best player off the bench out of the lineup they have more than enough firepower to rout the Mavericks by more than the 11-point spread.
