Top Props of the Week: 2013 NBA Draft
by Dave Schwab - 6/24/2013
While Miami is still celebrating last Thursday’s thrilling Game 7 victory over San Antonio to clinch its second straight NBA title, it is already time to move on with the staging of this year’s NBA Draft at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn this upcoming Thursday night. To get you ready for all the action, BetOnline has released an extensive list of prop bets covering the event. The following is a look at a few of the more interesting wagers along with my pick for each.
Which player is drafted first; Shabazz Muhammad from UCLA or Georgia’s Kentavious Caldwell-Pope?
Muhammad (-135)
Caldwell-Pope (+105)
The former UCLA star has been touted as high as a Top-10 pick to going somewhere in the middle of the first round. Chad Ford has him ranked at No.17 on his Top-100 players list and projects that he will be selected by Boston with the 16th overall pick in the first round. Caldwell-Pope comes in ranked higher at No.11 and is projected to go ninth overall to Minnesota.
Recent reports still have the Celtics up in the air as far as their first-round plans, especially with their former head coach Doc Rivers headed to Los Angeles to take over the same spot with the Clippers, so it is hard to know what they will do. The Timberwolves have been leaning towards Caldwell-Pope from the start. Stick with the favorable money line with this prop with Caldwell-Pope going first.
Will former North Carolina guard Reggie Bullock be drafted in the first round?
“Yes” -163
“No” +133
Bullock made a huge name for himself this past season as the Tar Heels third-leading scorer after two solid-but-unspectacular seasons as a role player. Some projections have him going in the Top 20 of the draft, while a few others have him falling to early in the second round. No team has gone on record as far as personally naming Bullock as its top selection for Thursday night’s proceedings, but the general consensus is that this guy is still first-round material.
While it might be a nail-biter as the first round picks wear on, I would take the higher risk on the money line that Bullock is selected in the first round as opposed to being passed over by all 30 picks.
What will be former Indiana guard Cody Zeller’s draft position be?
“Under” 10.5 -115
“Over” 10.5 -115
Zeller is not going to last much longer than the first 15 picks of this draft, so with the money line being even for either under or over a Top-10 pick, the question is which mock draft board do you trust? Going back to Chad Ford’s Top-100 player list, you find Zeller listed as the 10th-best player on the board. Ford also has Philadelphia selecting him with the 11th overall pick.
Taking into consideration the needs of the first 10 teams for Thursday night’s draft order, the only other power forward projected to go higher than Zeller is UNLV’s Anthony Bennett. It is doubtful that the Sixers are going to be able to come to terms with Andrew Bynum, so the need to draft some size is definitely there. I am sticking with the projection that he goes No.11 to Philly, making the play for this prop on the over.
Will former Louisville standout Peyton Siva be drafted?
Yes -125
No -105
At just 6-foot-0, size is a definite issue for the former Cardinals point guard, but the fact that his old team just won a national title is a definite plus for his chances that some team uses a second round pick to add him to its roster. He has already worked out for Portland and is getting some serious interest from the Los Angeles Lakers. A few draft experts believe that the Lakers’ obvious need for additional team speed has them already poised to pull the trigger and select Siva with their second-round pick.
The simple fact that many experts believe he could go as high as a mid-second round pick is another good reason to take the slightly elevated risk on the yes money line for this prop even though the NBA Draft only lasts two rounds, or 60 picks.
