Tracking the Wizards: NBA Picks and Handicapping for Washington Basketball
by Dave Schwab - 12/18/2014
The use of specific betting strategies such as specialization on a single NBA team can often times give you an edge against the sportsbooks when it comes to wagering on the games. To put this theory to the test, I am spending the entire season focusing my handicapping efforts solely on the Washington Wizards and releasing weekly free picks with the use of Doc's Sports Unit Betting System. The long-term goal of this endeavor is to earn a solidprofit betting Wizards' games this year.
Doc's will be posting these weeklyfree picks on their homepage, so be sure to check the site to follow along with my progress. The Wizards have already established themselves as one of the top teams in the East on the court this season, so it is up to me to make them pay off at the betting window.
Washington Wizards Free Picks, Odds and Predictions
Friday, Dec. 19, 7:30 p.m. EST (AmericanAirlines Arena)
Washington heads south to Miami for a Friday night Southeast Division showdown with the Heat at AmericanAirlines Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (ET), and the game will be available on NBA League Pass.
The Wizards bring a straight up five-game winning streak into Friday night's game after knocking off Minnesota 109-95 this past Tuesday night as 12-point home favorites. It was just the second time they covered against the spread in their last six contests. The total in that game went "over" the closing 202.5-point line after staying "under" in six of Washington's previous seven games.
Miami comes into this game fresh off a 105-87 beatdown at the hands of Utah this past Wednesday night as a three-point home favorite to fall to 12-14 SU (11-14-1 ATS) on the year. It is now a full seven games behind the Wizards in the Southeast Division race and ranked seventh in the Eastern Conference. The Heat have failed to cover in seven of their last 10 games, and the total has stayed under in six of their last eight outings.
Washington at Miami Betting Storylines
Many NBA experts rank Washington's backcourt of John Wall and Bradley Beal as one of the top three in the league, and both have been more than living up to this lofty praise during the team's current winning streak. Beal scored a game-high 22 points in this past Monday's 93-84 victory over Utah at home, and in Wednesday's victory against the Timberwolves, Wall led the way with 21 points while dishing out an incredible 17 assists.
Washington, as a whole, is averaging 101 points and it is ranked second in the league in assists with 25.8 a game. The real strength of this team could be a defense that is ranked sixth in the NBA in points allowed (96.5). It has also been strong under the boards with the help of Marcin Gortat with an average of 43.7 rebounds a game. The only injury concern is with Paul Pierce, who is day-to-day while dealing with a sore toe.
The Heat started the season with three straight wins and they were 5-2 SU after their first seven games, but the void left by the departure of LeBron James is starting to sink in as the losses continue to pile up. That first victory of the year came against the Wizards in a 107-95 romp as five-point home favorites, but in the second meeting this season, Miami was pummeled by its division rivals 107-86 on the road as a 4.5-point underdog.
The big two of Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh continue to lead the team with a combined 44.1 points, 11.9 rebounds and 7.4 assists a game, and the addition of Luol Deng has added 14 points and 4.9 rebounds. Overall, the Heat is ranked 26th in the NBA in scoring with 94 points a game, and they are dead last in the league in rebounds with an average of 35.7. One injury concern for Friday night is Bosh's sore calf, which kept him out of Wednesday's game against the Jazz.

Washington at Miami Free NBA Picks and Betting Predictions
Miami has obviously gotten the best of this matchup recently on its home court, but that was then and this is now. Beal missed the season opener against the Heat, but he is more than ready to go this time around to help the Wizards take the 2-1 edge in the season series with a SU win that covers the four-point spread.
