With the football season now in the rear view mirror, the action on the hardcourt will be getting most of the attention over the next few months. It's only six weeks until the NCAA Tournament. Be ready for some bigger lines on the public favorites as more bettors jump into the college basketball betting market in the weeks ahead.
It's the third straight season for the College Basketball Weekly Schedule Spot Fade Picks here at Doc's Sports. I'll be looking at schedule spots that could be bad ones for teams throughout the course of the season and then recommending plays based on those spots. We'll track the weekly results throughout the course of the season. For games that don't have a line at the time each article is written, the Bookmaker opening line will be used for grading purposes. All plays will be one-unit plays.
A 2-2 split on the plays last week. Once again, the weekday plays were 2-0 and the weekend plays went 0-2.
There are a lot of scheduling spots I like this week, so let's get right into it.
Play #1- Play on Georgia +6 (Fade Florida) on Tuesday, February 7
The Florida Gators have been demolishing everyone in their sight of late. Still, this is undoubtedly a bad spot for them. Florida just beat Kentucky 88-66 on national television on Saturday night, and now they must travel to Georgia to take on the Bulldogs. Georgia already took Florida to overtime on the road, and the Bulldogs have proven very capable of keeping it close against top competition. It's a definite letdown spot for the Gators, especially since they don't get much time to recover from their Kentucky high. Georgia could pull the upset here, and I'll definitely grab the points.
Play #2- Play on Eastern Michigan +2.5 (Fade Toledo) on Tuesday, February 7
The Toledo Rockets are coming off a gut-wrenching double overtime loss on the road against rival Bowling Green on Saturday. Those losses are the ones that normally have a hangover effect on the next game. Toledo isn't a particularly deep team, either, and with only a couple days of rest between the games, the Rockets are likely to be a little winded in this one. Eastern Michigan is an underrated team in the MAC, and their matchup zone should give Toledo trouble. Toledo will likely settle for jump shots here, and those jumpers are less likely to be falling when they are worn out.
Play #3- Play on North Dakota (Fade Eastern Washington) on Thursday, February 9
Two of Eastern Washington's last three games have gone into overtime. Their last game went into triple overtime. The Eagles won 130-124 this past Saturday at home against Portland State. Eastern Washington ranks in the Bottom 100 in the country in bench minutes, and their starters logged some massive minutes this past weekend. North Dakota has been a tough team to beat at home, and I think laying the short price with them in this game will be the right move. I expect Eastern Washington to struggle to knock down jumpers here.
Play #4- Play on Idaho (Fade Northern Colorado) on Thursday, February 9
Northern Colorado nearly knocked off North Dakota on the road last game. They had a nine-point lead with less than five minutes left and let it get away. Northern Colorado eventually lost by 10 in overtime. They go home to play an Idaho team that is playing with a lot of confidence right now. Idaho beat Montana on the road recently. Northern Colorado must rebound from taking that tough loss Saturday against North Dakota. Idaho isn't a big-name team, and I wonder if Northern Colorado has a hard time getting up for this game after their recent disappointment.
Play #5- Play on San Francisco (Fade BYU) on Saturday, February 11
The BYU Cougars put a lot into that home game against Gonzaga, and they came up empty. They nearly lost their next game against lowly Portland before making a big run late in the game. BYU now takes a two-game road trip to Pepperdine and San Francisco. This isn't a short trip for BYU, and I see this second game being a tough one for the Cougars. Kyle Smith has done an amazing job with this Dons team in his first year with the program. The Dons were competitive in their loss at BYU, and now I expect them to win and cover at home against the Cougars.
Play #6- Play on West Virginia (Fade Kansas State) on Saturday, February 11
The Kansas State Wildcats have had some really emotional games of late. They went to Baylor and pulled the stunning upset. They then followed that up with a tough close loss at home against rival Kansas. The Wildcats must make the long trip to West Virginia this coming weekend to take on a Mountaineers team looking for revenge from their loss to Kansas State earlier this year. West Virginia has slipped up a few times of late, but I think they'll be sharp for this one. Look for Bob Huggins' team to make a statement here.
Play #7- Play on UCF (Fade UConn) on Saturday, February 11
The UConn Huskies played a road game at Cincinnati last Saturday. They travel home to play USF on Wednesday before making the long trip to Florida to take on UCF. That's some serious travel for the Huskies. UConn has a serious lack of depth this year, and the Huskies are likely to be running on fumes for this one. UCF has a tremendous defense, and the Knights should be able to win and cover at home in this contest.
