Last night, the Knicks got a crucial win over the Boston Celtics, bringing them just 1 game back of the Milwaukee Bucks for the second seed in the Eastern Conference. After plenty of questionable statuses on the injury report, the Celtics eventually played their entire starting lineup, but the Knicks were still able to gut out a 118-109 victory. Jalen Brunson had another big game, scoring 39 points, as the Knicks were able to hand the Celtics just their 4th home loss of the season. Jayson Tatum’s 18 points were a team high for the Celtics, as the New York defense kept the league leaders contained all night long.
Doc’s Sports offers NBA picks for every game on our NBA predictions page.
From a betting perspective, we went 0-2. We took a shot with the +2.5 point spread on the Celtics, but the Knicks secured a 9 point victory. For the player prop, Donte DiVincenzo finished with 17 points, just a single point short of the 17.5 point line. We are still in the green on the season, and tonight’s slate will be the final regular season betting slate for the Knicks.
The New York Knicks (48-32) head to Brooklyn for a crucial showdown with the Nets (32-48). Every NBA team has just two games remaining in the regular season, and the Knicks could still finish as high as 2nd in the East, and as low as 6th. Alternatively, the Nets have absolutely nothing to play for at this stage of the season, as they have already been eliminated from playoff contention. Needless to say, this game means a lot more to the Knicks than their crosstown rivals, and their superior quality will shine through. Brooklyn has struggled on both ends of the court all season long, and they have proven they are too good to tank, but not good enough to make the playoffs. Cam Thomas and Mikal Bridges have led the way for the Nets, but their minimal impact on the offensive end won’t be enough to keep this one close against a desperate New York Knicks team.
The Knicks were expected to be a serious NBA title contender this season, and they’ve lived up to expectations. Despite long term injuries to Mitchell Robinson (51 games), OG Anunoby (27 games), and Julius Randle (34 games and counting), the Knicks have managed to stay afloat in the East, and have a very real chance at securing the number two seed in the conference. Brunson has been putting the team on his back all season long, and his impact on the offensive end cannot be overstated. His 28.6 PPG is by far his career high, and he’s averaged 31.4 PPG since February 1st. The Knicks defense combined with Brunson’s microwave scoring has made them legitimate threats, and aside from the Boston Celtics, they should be the favorites against anyone in the East across a 7 game series.
New York’s ability to limit the scoring chances for their opposition allows their mediocre offense to usually be enough. Robinson and Isiah Hartenstein do a fantastic job at guarding the paint, and the pair of big men ensure there is always a solid defender on the court for New York. Josh Hart’s hustle is incredible to watch on a nightly basis, and against a flat Brooklyn team, the energy will tilt the scales in favor of New York.
The Knicks are 10.5 point favorites against Brooklyn tonight, and it should be pushing into the teens. Brooklyn is 6-9 across their last 15 games, but are 5-1 against non-playoff teams, and 1-8 against playoff teams in that span. Their losses have been coming by wide margins, and their wins against terrible NBA teams will not do much to convince me they have a chance against a motivated New York team. The Knicks have won 5 in a row against the Nets dating back to last season, and have held them to just 99.3 PPG in this year’s meetings. Brooklyn doesn’t really bring anything special to the table, they just play consistently mediocre basketball. They can usually win against bottom feeders, and usually fall short against the top dogs. The Knicks undoubtedly fall into the latter category, and even with a 10.5 point spread, the Knicks shouldn’t have too many issues getting the cover on route to a big win.
For the second bet of the night, the total is sitting at 212.5 points, and we have to take the Under. New York’s defense will be able to hold the Nets to a total score in the low 90’s, and while I expect the Knicks to run up the scoreboard on their own, a 109-93 type of game certainly feels on the cards. Both of these teams are bottom 5 in the league in pace, and there will be no reason to push the pace for either team. The last 2 meetings between these teams finished under this total, and in a high stakes game for the Knicks, their defense will allow the Under to cash in 3 straight.
Finally, there is one player prop I couldn’t keep my eyes off. OG Anunoby’s point line is coming in at 13.5 points, and while his impact on the defensive end cannot be overstated, his offensive impact will be muted tonight. Anunoby has only surpassed this line once since coming back from injury last week, as his shooting has not been the same since his elbow surgery. Anunoby was brought to New York to defend, and he will do just that tonight. He may hit 1-2 3’s, but his hesitancy to drive to the hoop will see him fall short of this line.
