Previous Game Betting Recap
On Friday night, the Houston Rockets had a massive NBA Cup matchup against their Texan rivals, the Dallas Mavericks. The Rockets led by double digits in the third quarter thanks to a dominant 31-17 showing in the second, but failed to hold onto the lead and lost their first game of the season 116-111. They started the fourth quarter 2-for-16 from the floor, as their offense went ice-cold at the worst time possible. Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg combined for 68 points with Irving going 5-for-8 from behind the arc. The Dallas duo started slow, but eventually figured out how to break down the Rockets, and Houston had no reply. It didn’t help that Houston went 8-for-13 from the free throw line in the fourth, with Durant missing a pair of clutch free throws to tie the game late. Jabari Smith Jr. got after it early with 22 points, while Durant’s volume got him up to 28 points despite a poor shooting night from the floor and the charity stripe.
From a betting perspective, we went 1-4. We took the Rockets spread at -6.5 and also a pair of alt spreads at plus money, none of which cashed as Houston lost outright. We also took a stab at +150 odds on Fred VanVleet to get two or more steals, and he finished with one. Our lone winner was on Cooper Flagg to log over 5.5 assists at +100, and he finished with six.
The Rockets bounced back on Saturday night with a dominant 119-98 victory over the short-handed Oklahoma City Thunder. Houston won all four quarters as their defense dominated, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 26 points making him the only Thunder player to score 12 or more on Saturday. Alperen Sengun made his return from injury, posting a well-rounded 16/9/9 stat line. Smith Jr. led the way with 30 points, Marcus Smart drained seven threes off the bench, and every Rocket who got at least 10 minutes of play time finished with a positive net rating.
Rockets vs Celtics Preview
Tonight, the Houston Rockets (6-1) host the Boston Celtics (5-1) in a pivotal clash at the Toyota Center. The Celtics have won five in a row since dropping their first game of the season, but take on Houston after playing Orlando last night. That gives the Rockets the venue and rest advantage in this one, but a pesky Celtics side will still be difficult to put away.
Boston made the stunning move to trade Jaylen Brown in the offseason, and they haven’t missed a beat without their Finals MVP. Jayson Tatum is thriving with 28.3 PPG with a career-high 7.7 assists, while Paul George has turned back the clock as the second option behind Tatum. George was not the primary asset Boston got back for Brown, the draft picks were, and his pleasant revival has been crucial to the Celtics hot start early. His 20.7 PPG is second-best behind Tatum, and he also leads the team in rebounds at 6.0 per game.
One Celtics who needs to show up in this matchup is Derrick White. White was looking like he might be the final member of a ‘Big Three’ in Boston, but hasn’t looked like himself this season. His 11.8 PPG is a steep dropoff compared to previous seasons, as Payton Pritchard has seemingly leapfrogged him in the pecking order. He is still getting active on defense and isn’t in danger of losing his starting role, but White needs to find a way to get his scoring going if the Celtics want to keep up their hot start.
This is a fascinating matchup between two teams that live and die on the defensive end. Boston has the 5th-best defensive rating this season with a real emphasis on limiting paint points, while the Rockets are 9th in the league. Both of these offenses can score, with the fourth-best and best offensive ratings in the league, but that is likely down to small sample size and some hot shooting nights to start off the year. Houston and Boston will make their living on defense this season.
One matchup to highlight is Sengun on Mitchell Robinson and Neemias Queta in the paint. The Celtics have been excellent at stopping centers from creating offense this year, as they have allowed the second-fewest assists against big men through the first six games. Robinson is a very physical defender, but he can still get caught in the open floor if left on an island. Sengun will look to draw Robinson away from the hoop whenever possible, and he will not hesitate to build up a head of steam and drive to the hoop when he gets the chance. It appears as though he is fully healthy after his back kept him out a few games last week, and this is a good matchup for a player of his caliber to stop passing and start scoring against Boston.
While scoring paint points, limiting turnovers, and taking care of business on the glass are all crucial ingredients to winning, this one will likely come down to who gets hot from deep. Both of these teams have been shooting lights out this season from behind the arc, but this is arguably the toughest perimeter defensive matchup either team has faced this year. White and Pritchard never take a second of rest on defense, while VanVleet and Amen Thompson are equally energetic on that end of the floor. Houston has the third-best three point percentage this season, while Boston’s volume has them with the seventh-most triples scored per game at 14.3. This is a dogfight between two of the best teams in the league where taking away the most dangerous shot in the sport will be crucial for either team’s success.
Celtics vs Rockets Best Bets
We have taken the Rockets on the spread multiple times this year, and they have gone 6-1 against the number so far. While I don’t plan on blindly tailing Houston all season, this is another generous number available tonight. The Rockets are 4.5-point favorites over Boston, which feels a little disrespectful. Boston is on the second night of a back to back, they are on the road, their injury report hasn’t even been released yet, and they are taking on a team with the joint-most wins in the league. All the advantages point to Houston, who is also getting healthy as Reed Sheppard looks likely to return to the court. Boston’s last four wins have come against the Bulls, Nets, Bulls, and Magic, who have a combined record of 4-14 this year. Boston has looked good against bad teams, but they now take on one of the elite teams in the league, yet are still being given close to 50/50 odds. I see Houston winning this one comfortably, so we will lay the points.
For the second pick, we will look at the Rockets’ matchup down low. The Celtics have been exceptional at stopping centers from creating this year, and we are getting an inflated 6.5 assist line with Sengun. Sengun is still working his way back from injury so I don’t expect a crazy workload, and the Celtics have allowed just 2.3 assists per game to centers this year. Of course, Sengun is a much better creator than most big men that have taken on the Celtics, but that still doesn’t explain this inflated line. He has gotten off to a hot start with 7.4 assists per game, but this is the time to sell high on the hype and take the under.
Finally, we will take Kevin Durant to find his shooting rhythm from behind the arc. One of the league’s elite marksmen has gotten off to a slow start from deep, but this is an area of the floor the Celtics have struggled with. Their guards are excellent on-ball defenders, but they lack the size to switch onto Durant, and the forwards in Boston are relatively immobile. We can get -140 odds on Durant to drain two or more threes, and +200 odds on 3+, both of which we will take.
Pick: Houston Rockets (-4.5) 4 Units
Pick: Alperen Sengun Under 6.5 Assists -120 5 Units
Pick: Kevin Durant Over 1.5 Threes -140 2 Units
Pick: Kevin Durant Over 2.5 Threes +200 1 Unit
