Take 'Under' 59.5 Boston College at North Carolina St. (12:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 6)

Both of these teams have played well to start the 2018 season as they come into this one with a combined 8-1 record overall on the year. Both head coaches in this one are in their 6th year at their respective schools. These two teams are ACC Atlantic Division foes, meaning they face off against one another on a yearly basis. These two teams have played some real grinder type games in each of the four last seasons having averaged just 35.5 combined points scored per game in the head-to-head match-ups, with all four contests going 'under' the total and none of them combining to go above 44 points scored in any game, either. For as much publicity as NC State gets for it's starting quarterback Ryan Finley, it has been the Wolfpack defense that's carried them so far this season as they come in having allowed an average of just 15 points per game. Boston College is a team that really loves to run the football. The Eagles could be without their star running back, A.J. This pick falls into one of my top CFB systems, and I have Temple winning this game by 17 to 24 points Saturday. This is the Pirates second road game of the season, and they put up just 13 points in their first road game, which was also their only game against a conference opponent this season. Temple has averaged 33.7 ppg over their last 3 games, and they allowed just 17 points in their only conference game this season. Temple has had a much harder strength of schedule so far this season, which is exactly why their numbers might not look that impressive on paper. However, I have them winning this game big at home Saturday. The Owls are 15-3 ATS in their last 18 games against a conference opponent, and they have been a covering machine the last 3 seasons during the month of October going 7-1 ATS. It's been a tough last few games for the Washington State Cougars. First, they fell on the road to USC after blowing a lead in the fourth quarter. Then they needed a late fourth-quarter touchdown to beat a game Utah team. Now they must travel to Oregon State and lay 16 points. This is a big letdown spot, and we like Oregon State to do well in this spot at home. Look, the Beavers are a not so good team, but they were able to score 31 points against Ohio State, so we believe in their offense in this spot and against a Washington State team that's allowed at least 24 points in each of their last three games. Washington State is not only in a letdown spot here, but they have Oregon on deck, and then Stanford, so it's a bit worrisome for the Cougars. And we like to believe they sleepwalk through this game and fail to cover the big spread. The Cougars are just 2-5 in their last 7 October games, while the Beavers are 36-15-1 in their last 52 October games. This is a bad spot for Washington State, and we look to exploit it. I have now hit five straight newsletter free plays after coming through with the Lions (+3) last week. Let's go for No. 6 in a row this week. Desperation has definitely set in for these teams. The Falcons are 1-3 and the Steelers are a modest 1-2-1. Both teams need this win desperately to get their seasons back on track. And I think the home team will get it. Atlanta has suffered back-to-back gut-wrenching losses at home to the Saints (in OT) and the Bengals (in the final 15 seconds). The Steelers haven't been any better, and these two teams are really mirror images of one another. Both have Pro Bowl quarterbacks throwing to star receivers. Both are missing their stud running backs. Neither is playing much defense. But in this instance I'm going with the home team. Atlanta has played three straight at home with mixed results. I don't expect things to go better for them on the road. The Falcons defense has been decimated by injuries, and right now they can't stop anyone. At all. At least Pittsburgh has a half-dozen guys that can play defense. The Falcons defensive depth chart right now is just sad. And now that the Falcons are going to be without Grady Jarrett, really the last good player they had on that side of the ball. The Cowboys have won two of their last three games, and they are playing better. Dallas has won three straight in the series, and they will want to show that they are still the best team in Texas. Take Arizona over Anaheim (9 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 6)

Look, this is a spot where we like Arizona to do well in their home opener against a team in Anaheim who will be playing their second road game in a row to open the season. At the end of the day, we are very low on Anaheim this year for a number of reasons. Their stars are aging and the defense group is underwhelming, to say the least. Arizona has a budding star in net in Antii Raanta, who will turn heads this season and break out in a big way. The Coyotes are also going to be better on both ends of the ice with the additions of Alex Galchenyuk, and Michael Grabner, that latter of which will help the PK. The defense unit is going to much better than it was last year, and that starts with the future captain, Oliver Ekman-Larsson. We expect the Coyotes to turn in a great performance in front of their home crowd and make their home opener a winning one.
