Take Detroit (+165) over Oakland (9 p.m., Thursday, April 15)

Going to get an excellent underdog price here on the Detroit Tigers in this matchup. The Tigers will hand the baseball here to starter Tarik Skubal. The young rookie left-hander is one of the more talented pitchers in the game, ranking high on the entire top prospects list coming into the season. Skubal had a solid outing in his first start of the season but was hit hard in his last game on the road at Cleveland. Much of that had to do with the long ball as Skubal is an extreme fly ball pitcher and he allowed 3 home runs in that game. He gets the start here in this one at pitcher friendly Oakland Coliseum, which is an ideal fit for someone who relies so heavily on fly ball outs. The A's counter here with soft tossing left-hander Cole Irvin. The Tigers offense overall isn't very good, BUT when it faces lefties it's a much different story as Detroit hit an almost hard to believe .321 last year against southpaws, easily leading the league and more than 100 points higher than when they were facing a right-hander. Getting this particular matchup between these two pitchers and teams at this ballpark and at a decent price is solid value. Play Detroit in this game. Everybody knows the Dodgers can score. They are currently #2 in MLB in both Batting Average and RBI’s. Austin Gomber will toe the rubber for Colorado. He does not have much big-league experience. Chavez Ravine (Dodger Stadium) has been known as a pitcher’s park for decades. However, in the last few years that has changed, primarily because of the Dodgers consistently having one of the best offenses in the league. Look for some fireworks here on Thursday evening as we see both teams doing well offensively and the total going over. We don’t normally like to take big favorites like this, but we think the big number is justified on Thursday. We are doing this writeup with the Kings Wednesday game against the Wizards still pending, but the Suns aren’t a team you want to face right now on a back-to-back. They had Wednesday off, and they have been playing as well as any team in the NBA recently. They have become popular with bettors but have still been covering on a regular basis. They are a respectable 7-3 ATS when laying 10 or more points, and depending on how the Kings come out of their Wednesday game, this could very well be a double-digit line. The Kings are floundering now. Just like they are almost every season at this point. They have lost seven straight entering Wednesday, and they covered in just one of those games. The oddsmakers have been more than generous with the points with this team. The Suns have one of the best defenses in the NBA and the Kings one of the worst. He beat starter Austin Gomber 4-2 in that game. Gomber is 0-2 in his two starts and he has walked 11 batters in just nine inning this year. The Dodgers are 22-9 against a left-handed starter, and they are 88-32 in their last 120 home games. Los Angeles has dominated this series. Take ‘Over’ 226.5 Memphis at Chicago (8 p.m., Friday, April 16)

These two just met on Monday and played a 101-90 slog that was never even close to the posted total. Both teams were terrible in that game, and I think that this one will be a bit more freewheeling. The Bulls were especially pathetic, shooting just 5-for-31 (16%) from 3-point range and just two of the nine players that took a 3-pointer in that game made one. Chicago will shoot the ball much better in its own gym against a middling Memphis defense. That game in Memphis was also the end of a five-game road trip for Chicago. I think they will be a little fresher after having a couple days back home. The Bulls have gone ‘under’ in seven straight home games. But this team is so erratic – they’ve scored over 115 in points in four of their past 10 games and they have scored under 109 points in four of their last 10 – that I don’t expect them to remain a consistent ‘under’ team at home. Memphis has seen at least 230 points in six of its last 10 games. This game on Friday will be their fourth in six nights, and I think that it will catch up to them on the defensive end. Take New York over New Orleans (1 p.m., Sunday, April 18)

These two teams continue to fight to reach the playoffs and will meet in the first contest on ESPN Sunday afternoon. My preference in this one is New York, who has a fine 17-10, 16-9-2 ATS record at Madison Square Garden (as of 4/13), while New Orleans is 9-16 SU on the road. The Knicks have been awesome when listed from +3 to -3 all season at 19-6 ATS and at home is 10-1, 9-2 ATS as a home favorite, winning by 8.1 points a game.
