I think that Cincinnati will have solid underdog value in this one. Kyle Hendricks is on the mound for the Cubs. I think that he is overvalued. Boston is likely starting Josh Winckowski, who has been oddly effective despite not being all that good. He has won three straight starts and has a 2.12 ERA in his last three starts. Good enough! Especially against a Cubs team that is likely rolling out Adrian Sampson. Sampson has been DFA’d twice this year. He’s coming off the scrap heap. I know he’s pitching for a job. But he’s facing a legit lineup that is going to be fresh off a day off and salty after facing Alek Manoah on Wednesday. The Cubs haven’t had a day off since June 9. He dominated the Cubs with a vicious 12-6 curveball and racked up nine strikeouts to match a season high. The 33-year-old veteran has a 14.5% K-BB%, which matches his season-long total from 2018, when he was an All-Star before missing significant time due to injury. He faces a Phillies team that can be hit or miss (no pun intended), and we see him doing well here as he has a 2.53 road ERA and 1.08 WHIP away from St Louis. After trading away several key players in the winter and spring, it was a given in spring training it was going to be a long year for the Oakland A’s. That apathy has carried over to the Athletics fans, who are tired of this process. Oakland opened a four-game division series with Seattle on Thursday, and James Kaprielian is their expected starter to start the holiday weekend. After a solid 8-5 campaign in 2021, the A’s right-hander is 0-5 with a super-sized 5.88 ERA. Seattle was not as good as their 90-72 record of a year ago. However, they should not be below .500, either, which is primarily due to their 26th-ranked scoring offense, which is only three spots ahead of Oakland in three in the big leagues. Marco Gonzales is supposed to take the ball for the Mariners. And after a slow start, he has a high-quality 3.31 ERA on the season, despite a 4-8 record. In fact, Gonzales’s ERA was 2.90 in June, yet Seattle lost four of his five starts. Expect the M’s bats to ignite against Oakland pitchers and Gonzales does the rest in victory. A lot more was expected from this Detroit Tigers team in 2022, and they haven't performed anywhere near their preseason expectations thus far this season. One big reason for their failures has been due to an offense that ranks near the bottom of the league in most key offensive categories. The Tigers called up top prospect Riley Greene from their minor leagues on June 18th, and he's really given their offense a much-needed spark. Since Greene joined their team, Detroit has posted the #1 offense in MLB with a 128 wRC+, to go along with the 2nd best team batting average and 3rd best in team OPS as well. One other big reason for the Tigers struggles this season has had to do with playing a harder than average schedule. When things have eased up, the Tigers have been an average team with a 15-16 record on the year when going up against teams with a losing record. They go up here against a bad Kansas City Royals team in this one that's on pace to lose more than 100 games this season. Play Detroit in this game.
