Take Tampa Bay over Texas (2 p.m., Thursday, June 2)

I will go with the road team in this one. Tampa Bay lost the first two games of this series. I don’t see them losing three of four to the Rangers. Tampa has feasted on bad teams. They are 54-23 in their last 77 games against teams that are below .500. Texas is 9-21 in its last 30 games against teams from the American League East, and they are 16-39 in their last 55 Game 4’s in a series. Corey Kluber is going for the Rays. The former Cy Young winner has gotten stronger as the season has moved on, and he has just a 3.00 ERA in his last three starts. He was excellent in his last start, allowing just three hits and one run in a win over the Yankees. Texas lefty Taylor Hearn has struggled. No reason to think that’s going to change. Seattle is 15-7 in their last 22, and I think that they have the better arm on the mound in this one. The Cincinnati bullpen wasted a strong start from starter Tyler Mahle last Sunday, who carried a no-hitter with two outs into the seventh before Thairo Estrada doubled on a first-pitch slider. Mahle worked around three walks and a hit batter to strike out eight over his scoreless 6 2/3 innings. This has been a recurring problem for the Reds all season, as they are 2nd worst in MLB in bullpen ERA. Mike Minor takes the hill for Cincinnati on Friday, and he comes in with a 1-6 record, 5.56 ERA, and 1.24 WHIP. The Nats, on the other hand, despite not a fantastic record, are 4th in MLB in batting average, and 4th in MLB in doubles, which will benefit them in hitter friendly Great American Ballpark. This matchup is the early game on Apple TV+, with Detroit visiting the Big Apple, out in the Bronx. After Gerrit Cole struggled last season without the sticky stuff on his pitching fingers, he regained his confidence and is 4-1, with a 3.12 ERA and WHIP of 1.04. Cole is backed by the best team in the American League, who might have a couple of holes in the batting order, but they know how to win. The Yankees right-hander is also facing the lowest-scoring team in baseball, the Tigers. Detroit has one of the five worst team batting averages in MLB, they average the fewest home runs and are next to last in walks. A deadly combination. I’m hard-pressed to think that the Yankees won't win this Friday matchup by at least two runs. I rarely lay -1.5 runs in baseball, but this play has blowout written all over it. The New York Yankees are off to a terrific start to the 2022 MLB season, winning at 111-game pace currently. The Yankees are expected to start Gerrit Cole in this one. The 31-year-old got off to an unexpected shaky start to this season, but he's been lights out in his last 7 starts, posting an ERA of just 2.33 to go along with an eye popping 60 strikeouts and just 8 walks. To win by more than 1.5 runs you need to have a big edge offensively, and the Yankees do in this one as they currently rank 7th in team offensive wRC+ compared to a Tigers offense that's dead last in the league. Detroit is slated to go with rookie starter Elvin Rodriguez in this game. Rodriguez is only pitching in the major leagues because of the all the injuries to the Tigers pitching staff right now. The 24-year-old clearly isn't ready to pitch at this level, as evidenced by his ugly 6.17 ERA on the season. Lay the -1.5 runs with New York in this game. Lorenzen hasn’t been as sharp in May, though, as he has allowed 3 earned runs or more in three of his last five starts, and the Phillies boast a deep and talented offense. The Angels offense is dynamite as well, but I am going to trust Wheeler pitching at home and to get the win.
