MLB Prediction From Scott Rickenbach:
Take ‘Under’ N.Y. Yankees at Boston (7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 21)
I expect runs to be tough to come by here Thursday based on this pitching matchup. Luis Gil is certainly still working back into a rhythm for the Yankees but seems to be getting a little better with each start and I like what I am seeing from him and expect him to have a good ratio of K/BB here again like he did in his only other home start since his return. The Red Sox start Lucas Giolito here and 3 of his last 4 starts have been quality starts in which he allowed just 1 earned run in each of the 3 quality outings plus he averaged nearly 7 innings per start in those 3! Keep in mind, this is a key divisional battle and the biggest rivalry in baseball plus has major bearings on the wild card race. All in all, it should be a tightly contested, low-scoring battle here. Per the above, this looks like a great spot for the Yankees and Red Sox game to stay UNDER the posted total. NFL Preseason Prediction From Raphael Esparza:
Take First Half N.Y. Giants (-3.5) over New England (7:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug 21)
The NY Giants get this game at home and you figure whoever is the starting QB the G-Men will move the ball down the field. The Giants beat the Jets last weekend in Preseason ball 31-12 and Dart, Wilson, and Winston all threw for 100 plus yards and I see the QB play again giving us another Preseason winner. Wouldn't shock me to see the Patriots cover this game (+6.5) but again this Free Play is on the New York Giants First Half. MLB Prediction From Vernon Croy:
Take ‘Over’ St. Louis at Tampa Bay (7:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 21)
Now let's get to your MLB comp play for Thursday August 21 between the St Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays. I do expect to see a lot of runs here Thursday with this pitching matchup. Gray has an ERA of 6.26 over his last five starts and he has given up seven home runs over those starts. Meanwhile Tampa Bay sends Joe Boyle to the mound and he has an ERA of 6.23 over his last five starts averaging just 4.1 innings per start. Boyle just gave up six earned runs in his last start including three home runs against Seattle. Boyle has averaged 19.9 pitches per inning over his last five starts as well and I do expect St Louis to put up a big number here Thursday. So we are taking the St Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays to go OVER the posted total. If you don’t have an account at Doc’s Sports sign up now and get $60 in premium member picks click here. MLB Prediction From Robert Ferringo:
Take Cincinnati (-125) over Arizona (9:40 p.m., Friday, Aug. 22)
Easy win with our free play last week and I am now 54-26 (68%) with my last 80 Doc’s Sports newsletter plays. We have racked up 80 of 118 wins in this space (68%) and I am 125-67 (65%) with my newsletter plays over the last 192 weeks. I think the Reds will grab a few more wins this weekend in Arizona and keep themselves in that Wild Card race. Arizona is a sinking ship. This team has been mailing it in since they gutted the roster at the trade deadline. They are just 13-17 in their last 30 games and even though they’ve been streaky – they have eight different runs of either 3+ wins or 3+ losses in a row since early July – I think that the arrow is pointed down for this group right now. Ryne Nelson has allowed 15 runs in his last 23 innings of work and Arizona has lost all four of those starts. Zack Littell has quietly been very good for the Reds. He has allowed one run or fewer in three of his last four outings and six of his last 10 starts. The Reds have won 8 of 10 and this team is fighting and clawing for a spot in the postseason. I don’t see them giving this one up. If you don’t have an account at Doc’s Sports sign up now and get $60 in premium member picks click here. MLB Prediction From Strike Point Sports:
Take New York over Boston (7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 22)
The Red Sox and Yankees are in a close battle for second place in the American League East and are still within striking distance of the Blue Jays with around 40 games left in the regular season. New York couldn’t get out of their own way and were playing some bad baseball for a couple of weeks. But getting Aaron Judge back and some other complimentary players healthy they have righted the ship and are stringing wins together. Max Fried is set to take the ball for the Yankees and he has pitched well in the Bronx this season going 5-2 with a 2.67 ERA over 11 starts, and I think he is going to deliver in this matchup. Bryan Bello has benefitted from the Boston schedule as he has made twice as many starts at home than on the road. Bello has picked up the win in 2 starts away from Fenway, but the Red Sox have lost all five of the other starts he has made, and I think he is going to struggle in the raucous atmosphere he is going to be pitching in. College Football Prediction From Scott Spreitzer:
Take #306 Kansas State (-3) over Iowa State (Noon, Saturday, August 23)
A Big-12 battle in Ireland to kickoff the season and a huge one at that. This game could go a long way in deciding the Big-12 race and a race for a playoff spot. While Iowa State returns 12 starters and QB Rocco Becht, the Cyclones must replace what was an excellent receiving corps and I expect it to take a couple of games. ISU plays a 3-3-5 defense which can be tough to prep for during the season when opponents don't have a lot of time. But K-State has not only seen it but had as much time as they wanted to prepare for it this off-season. Kansas State has a fantastic offensive backfield led by QB Avery Johnson. They own the best defensive line in the conference along with my highest rated HC (Chris Klieman). The Wildcats are in revenge for a 29-21 loss last November. K-State out-gained ISU and held the Cyclones to 324 yards on 4.1 yards per play but couldn't overcome a minus-2 turnover margin. I have Kansas State power rated the better team early in the season and have them winning by a TD. My comp play on Saturday: Kansas State minus the points. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer. NFL Preseason Prediction From Doc's Sports:
Take #118 New Orleans (+4.5) over Denver (1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 23)
The Saints are vying for one of the worst teams in the league and possibly get the No. 1 draft pick come April of 2026. They got pounded in Week 1 of the exhibition season against Los Angeles but rallied late to tie Jacksonville at Week 2 at the Superdome. Now they get to face former coach Sean Peyton and expect them be able to take this one down to the wire. The Saints have a ton of competition for starting spots and thus with two weeks off they will be more determined to win this game. Getting this many points is just icing on the cake. NFL Preseason Prediction From Jason Sharpe:
Take #121 Houston (+1.5) over Detroit (1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 23)
I expect the Detroit Lions will turn to quarterback Hendon Hooker for the majority of this game. With that I wouldn't expect much from the Lions offense as they haven't looked good with Hooker behind center this summer. It appears veteran Kyle Allen is the far superior backup QB for Detroit going into the 2025 season as he's looked great over the past two weeks so I expect the Lions to limit Allen's playing time in this contest to avoid what would be a big injury late in camp at the all-important backup QB position. On the other side of things, the Houston Texans defense looked great last week in their 20-3 win over Carolina. Take Houston plus the points here. NFL Futures Prediction From Strike Point Sports:
Take Houston Texans ‘Over’ 9.5 Wins (+100)
The Houston Texans were an average football team and won 10 games last year. Their biggest issue was their offensive line, and yes, it’s still not great but it will be improved. The Texans offense will be more efficient and their defense will make the necessary adjustments to be even better. Houston should once again be the best team in the AFC South so that gives them a 4-2 record, at worst there. The NFC and AFC West are the cross overs for the South this season and although they have some good teams that isn’t a daunting task. At worst I see that as a 5-3 record. This would give Houston 9 wins. The Texans would need to find one more win out of Buffalo, Baltimore, and Tampa Bay. This is a tough task but at worst I like them to get a win here getting Houston to 10 wins. The games that will have the biggest impact (Buffalo, San Francisco, and Denver, are all in Houston, which is huge for this seasons win total. Give me the Texans at OVER 9.5.
