Hawaii Bowl Predictions: Tulsa vs. Hawaii Odds and Betting Picks
by Aaron Smith - 12/21/2010
If you like offense, you should love this year’s Hawaii Bowl. Hawaii will take part in the game again this year, and they’ll square off against Tulsa. Both teams can score the points in bunches, so get ready for an action packed game on Friday night. Hawaii obviously will have a nice home field advantage, but this is a Tulsa team that has won at Notre Dame and Houston this year. Let’s take a closer look at how the matchups break down in this one.
Hawaii Bowl Predictions: The Offenses
Tulsa’s offense averaged 39.7 points per game during the regular season. The Golden Hurricane were about as balanced as you’ll find on the offensive side of the football. Tulsa was in the Top 16 in the nation in both rushing and passing offense. It all starts with quarterback G.J. Kinne. Kinne threw for 28 touchdowns and 3,307 yards on the season, and he also led the team in rushing yards. Tulsa has nine receivers that caught at least 15 passes this year, so they have plenty of weapons on the outside. This offense averaged 45 points per game in their last four contests.
Hawaii is usually a high-powered offense, and this year is no different. The Warriors have the top ranked passing attack in all of college football. Bryant Moniz threw for a staggering 4,629 yards during the regular season. Hawaii has an amazing duo of wide receivers in Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares. Both of these guys can get open against anyone, and they will definitely create mismatches in this game. While this is primarily a passing team, Alex Green has done a terrific job at running back for the Warriors. Green ran for 1,168 yards and 17 touchdowns this season. He averaged a stunning 8.8 yards per carry.
Tulsa vs. Hawaii: The Defenses
The Golden Hurricane were good against the run this year and terrible against the pass. Tulsa allowed 306 yards per game through the air, which is certainly an ominous sign considering they are facing the top ranked passing attack in the nation. This is a defense that struggled to get off the field on third down. Opponents converted 43 percent of their third down conversions against Tulsa this year. If this team doesn’t get pressure on the quarterback, Hawaii will likely have a field day with this secondary.
The Hawaii defense was pretty solid this year. They held opponents to just 22.7 points per game. The front seven do a nice job of holding their own in the running game, which has allowed the secondary to sit back in pass coverage this year. Keep a close eye on Mana Silva, who is the playmaker for this defense. Silva intercepted eight passes this year, and he is a sure tackler in the secondary as well.
Hawaii Bowl Betting Odds and Line Movement
The Warriors opened as 13.5 point favorites, according to college football odds, but the line has been steadily falling. Hawaii is now favored by 10 at most books. The posted total opened at 69 points and was quickly bet up to 73 points, where it has been steady the last few days.
Tulsa vs. Hawaii Betting Trends
Tulsa is 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games overall
Tulsa is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games
Hawaii is 7-0 ATS in their last 7 home games
Hawaii is 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games overall
The ‘under’ is 4-0 in Tulsa’s last 4 bowl games
Hawaii Bowl Predictions: Tulsa vs. Hawaii Betting Picks
The Tulsa secondary has struggled all year, and this is the best passing attack in the nation. Hawaii will be able to score at will in this one. I do think Tulsa will be able to put up plenty of points as well with their balanced offense. I like the ‘over’ and Hawaii -10 in this one.
