Sunday Night Football Picks: Detroit Lions vs Philadelphia Eagles

Sunday Night Football will be a treat for football fans this week! In the matchup we all deserved to see last year and never did, the Detroit Lions travel to the City of Brotherly Shove to challenge the defending Super Bowl Champion Eagles.
The Lions come into this one off a pretty easy win in Washington 44-22 over the "All of a sudden sad excuse for a football team" Commanders. I can't think of a better way of putting it. Some sharp bettors I know were on it preseason, betting the under on season wins. Maybe my fading fandom got in the way, but I expected a little bit more out of them this season, especially considering the shellacking they gave the Detroit Lions in the playoffs.
With Washington out of it, there isn't any competition left in the NFC East for Philly. They have almost as many wins as the entire division combined. As an Eagles backer lately, this does concern me. We were on them at (+2.5) this past Monday in Lambeau, and it paid. The under was the sharper play, but a win is a win.
Do we back them once again, on a slightly short week, to defeat the Lions, a team 2nd in the league in scoring at more than 31 points per game?
We know that Detroit quarterback Jared Goff typically doesn't play his best football outdoors in the elements, especially later in the year. He's 1-2 on the season, traveling to play high-level teams. The two losses, however, came against two good defenses in Green Bay and Kansas City.
The Lions also have a recent loss to the J.J. McCarthy-led Minnesota Vikings. That one came at home and was not a good look when you think about traveling to play Jalen Hurts on the road.
You can say what you want about #1, but the Eagles have won 23 of their previous 26 games. That's only three losses and, even more impressive, three interceptions thrown over that span.
He might not be the facilitator that Jared Goff is, but he's arguably more valuable for other reasons, including the Tush Push, of course.

Detroit Lions (+2.5) at Philadelphia Eagles (-2.5)
This betting line opened up at just (-1) for the Philadelphia Eagles, and surprisingly, we've already moved to (-2.5). I thought this would be the case, but not this early in the week.
I'm sure plenty of people will have the Detroit Lions in their basic strategy teasers this week, with them sitting at (+2.5).
That won’t include me, though. The Lions are a fickle offense. They can score points in bunches faster than any team in the league. Let them fall behind by more than one score, though, and watch them begin to struggle moving the ball.
They are a run-to-pass team, and if the Philly defense can shut down "Outdoor on the road Goff", it could prove quite difficult for Detroit to claw its way back. I like Goff, but he isn't that guy who will bring you back from the closing jaws of a likely loss.
Point Total: 46.5
I like the under here, and the point total is set at 46.5, just under the key number of 47. The books want you to bet the over here, but I'll stay away.
Moneyline Odds
Lions: +120
Eagles: -145
Detroit Lions at Philadelphia Eagles Betting Analysis
The Eagles are putting it all together as we have reached the halfway point of the season. I'll be the first to admit that I thought they wouldn't miss a beat and were possibly a threat to go undefeated this year.
Silly me. That's not how the human psyche works, not even for tens of millions of dollars. If a person thinks they can get by on 70% effort, they probably will.
That's what Philly has done up to this point. I don't think there is any need to worry, though, at least not this week against a team that could potentially contend for the #1 overall seed and home-field advantage through the Super Bowl.
They looked like the better team, albeit slightly, against the Pack last week. The difference between Green Bay and Detroit is that the Packers have an elite defense.
Opposing pass rushes have been getting to Goff lately. He was sacked 9 times in the two weeks leading up to the Washington game. The Eagles' defensive line is firing faster than it has all season.
Please give me the champs at home, outside, where the forecast calls for 15 MPH winds on Sunday night.
