Sunday Night Football Picks: Philadelphia Eagles vs Washington Commanders Best Bets

This week’s Sunday Night Football matchup features two NFC East opponents as the 2-5 Philadelphia Eagles travel to Landover to take on the 1-4-1-1 Washington Commanders. The Eagles are limping into this game with a lengthy injury list, and with some key players already out. They have lost five straight games. Washington, on the other hand, is coming off a bye week following a disappointing game against San Francisco. With the significant injuries to the Eagles, it is hard to get behind this team. However, the Commanders are also facing some injury concerns of their own. This one might be an ugly football game.

Sunday Night Football Philadelphia Eagles Game Preview
Not only have the Eagles not won in five straight games, but they are also carrying a long injury report that includes Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith, and Dontayvion Wicks. All three of those players were not practicing as of Thursday. The Eagles dropped their last game, at home, against their big foe Dallas Cowboys. The Eagles were outgained by nearly 100 yards, and they lost their turnover battle. The Cowboys rushed for over 200 yards and averaged 5.4 YPC. Philadelphia failed to make any noise late in the game, and the Cowboys pulled away in the fourth quarter. With all the injuries, the Eagles are a statistical nightmare this season. They rank 31st in YPG (264.9), and they are scoring just 18.1 PPG. Defensively, they rank 27th in allowed YPG (371.3), and they are allowing 25 PPG.
If the Eagles want to end the losing streak and pick up a much-needed division win, they have to hope Barkley can play and take over the game. His mark was made in the previous game, though he only recorded seven carries. Philadelphia cannot afford to come out flat and fall behind, as the Tanner McKee led offense isn’t capable of mounting comebacks. On the flip side, if McKee can avoid mental mistakes, the Commanders have a soft secondary and he may be able to chip away at them all game, opening things up for Barkley. The defense will need to step it up as well, despite the injuries and depth concerns.
Philadelphia Eagles 3 Keys to Victory

Sunday Night Football Washington Commanders Game Preview
The Commanders are coming into this one facing their own injury concerns. Terry McLaurin is out for the remainder of the year, Laremy Tunsil is on the IR along with Jer’Zhan Newton, and fellow defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw is doubtful for this matchup as well. It doesn’t help that Treylon Burks is also listed as questionable, which limits depth at the receiver position. In their previous game against the 49ers, the Commanders went on a 14-3 run in the second half, but it was too little too late after San Francisco closed the game with a 23-17 win. Washington was simply outmatched in that matchup. They won the turnover battle and had less penalties, but the 49ers proved to be too tough. The glaring weakness was the lack of impact from the running attack. The Commanders averaged just 3.1 YPC on 17 attempts. Offensively the Commanders rank in the lower half of the league in YPG (325.2) and they are scoring 22 PPG. Defensively, they are allowing over 354 YPG and 28.7 PPG.
If the Commanders want to pick up a big win here and push the Eagles to the bottom of the division standings, they will need to take advantage of the lack of offensive prowess from the Philadelphia offense. The Commanders will want to shut down the run game and force McKee to beat them in the air. On offense, Washington needs to get the run game going. The Eagles defense allowed 204 rushing yards against the Cowboys in their last game, and the Commanders need to try and replicate that in order to open up the game for Jayden Daniels.
Washington Commanders 3 Keys to Victory
- Get the Ground Game Going
- Let it Fly Later On
- Shut Down Barkley
Washington Commanders Injuries
WR Treylon Burks – Questionable
G Nick Allegretti – Questionable
TE John Bates – Questionable
OT Laremy Tunsil – IR
DT Javon Kinlaw – Doubtful
DT Jer’Zhan Newton – IR
WR Terry McLaurin - IR
Sunday Night Football Game Predictions
This game is going to be an ugly one. Both teams are facing significant injury concerns, and this may be one of the worst single-game matchups of the season. The Eagles look lost, and rightfully so with the injuries, but there looks to be no hope on that sideline week in and week out. If Barkley, Smith, and Wicks are all unable to go, Washington should win this one with ease. However, I do think the Eagles could keep it close if their skill position stars can play. If they are out, take Washington -6.
My Pick: Washington Commanders, -6 / Under 40.5
