Sunday Night Football Picks: Seattle Seahawks vs Washington Commanders

There is good news for the Washington Commanders ahead of their meeting with the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday Night Football. For one, they will get starting quarterback Jayden Daniels back under center. Another plus is that they don’t have to travel across the country to play the Seahawks on a short week.
Honestly, though, it could have been about an hour and a half longer had the Commanders bothered to show up in the 2nd half Monday night against the Kansas City Chiefs. Hey, maybe they gave their all. The Chiefs do look like the best team in the league right now.
Patrick Mahomes is (+140) to win the MVP, and I get it. He's fantastic, but he's been under center virtually the entire time through their struggles. Now, they have a bunch of weapons, and we praise him again?
Someone like the Seattle Seahawks’ Sam Darnold, however, should have a lot lower betting odds than 50-1 to win the award. That is 35x the payout on a Darnold MVP ticket than Mahomes!
Darnold is tied with the Ravens’ Lamar Jackson for first in the NFL with 9.1 yards per pass attempt. More impressively, the USC grad is leading the league in average air yards/completion by a decent margin, almost a full yard at 9.7.
It helps that he's been sacked only eight times in eight games. Only the Broncos' Box Nix can say the same.
The success of the Seattle Seahawks isn't only about the quarterback play, though. Their defense ranks 3rd in the NFL in yards per play allowed. Opposing offenses are rushing the ball on a grand total of 35% of plays. That's precisely what you're looking for if you're head coach, Mike McDonald.
It is a trip across the country in the worst direction. Remember, the Seahawks are on a short week as well, having been the other half of this past Monday Night Football doubleheader.

Seattle Seahawks (-3) at Washington Commanders (+3)
This one opened at (-2.5) for the road favorite Seahawks, and not surprisingly, it soon moved to (-3). There's a small pros vs. joes split here of about 15%, with the public loving Seattle, while the sharp money liked them at (-2.5) but is now laying off a bit.
Point Total: 47.5
With the return of Daniels, it’s no surprise that the over 46 took money and moved through the key number of 47 to where we are now at 47.5.
Moneyline Odds
Seahawks: -170
Commanders: +140
Seattle Seahawks at Washington Commanders Betting Analysis
The passing game mismatch on paper that Darnold will have this week couldn’t get any wider, with Seattle 1st in the league in yards per pass and the Commanders last in yards per pass allowed.
Washington is the oldest defense in the league, and it’s more apparent where you might imagine, in the secondary. If the front wasn’t 8th in the league in sacks, I don’t know where this team would be.
We touched on the good, but there is some bad news for Washington this week. Their field stretcher and emerging superstar at wide receiver, Terry McLaurin, is out this week.
They just signed a kicker after their starter went down with a hamstring as well.
I know this is a “back is up against the wall” spot for Washington here, but it’s hard to bet against a team that ranks 3rd in the NFL in both yards per play and yards/play allowed.
The X-factor for Sunday night appears to be the Commanders' rushing game vs. the Seahawks' defense. Both rank inside the top five in several statistical categories.
Over the last three games, however, Washington is struggling more than they have all year, and Seattle is #1 in the league, allowing less than 3 yards/carry.
To cap it off, the Seahawks travel incredibly well, better than any team in the league. They're 3-0 on the road this season. You might say, well, that's not much of a sample size. Sure, that's cool. Last season was McDonald's first with the team. They won 7 of 8 road games and only 3 at home. That makes him 10-1 coaching on the road. That has to be some kind of record to start an NFL career.
His lone loss away from Seattle came in Detroit in his second-ever game as a head coach on the road. McDonald has been incredible.
I’ve heard people say this is a trap week, and this line sitting at (-3) certainly seems like a trap. Take that for what you will, but I have to go with my gut and my brain on this one.
