The Brooklyn Nets have been mainstays in the Eastern Conference basement with three straight finishes outside the play-in tournament. They are once again expected to be a bottom-feeder with a 24.5 win total. However, can their crafty offseason moves be enough to launch them back into relevancy?

Brooklyn Nets Offseason Recap

The Brooklyn Nets were quite aggressive in the offseason as they look to come out of their lengthy rebuild with a strong roster. Their biggest addition was the signing of Julius Randle from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Randle has fallen out of favor with the mainstream media, but the reality is that he is still a meaningful contributor on the court. His high-volume approach can lead to cold spells. However, when Randle is on his game, he is hard to slow down. He can drive into the paint and cause havoc but also isn’t afraid to pull up in the midrange to keep defenders honest. He won’t suddenly vault the Nets to the top of the conference, but there is no denying Randle is still a meaningful contributor and will help this team win games against other franchises in the NBA basement. 

Randle wasn’t the only addition expected to get serious minutes, as Brooklyn pried Moritz Wagner away from the Orlando Magic. Wagner was often overlooked in favor of his younger brother on the Magic, Franz, but he is still a valuable big man for a team that has struggled to control the paint. Wagner is a strong rebounder who can stretch the floor on offense, which should work nicely when he shares the floor with Randle. His defense has always been one of his strengths, and his partnership with Day’Ron Sharpe in the paint will give the Nets stability. 

Finally, the Nets have a flashy new point guard in Mikel Brown Jr. Brown Jr. was taken sixth overall by Brooklyn and is expected to be a starter for the Nets. Brooklyn hasn’t hit the goldmine with their previous high draft picks, but Brown Jr.’s floor is high, and he still has considerable upside too. His 6-foot-5 frame allows him to disrupt passing lanes on defense while passing around defenders on offense, and his seemingly unlimited range will force teams to pick him up in the halfcourt. His slender build will leave him vulnerable to screens, but his flashy offensive play should fill seats for the Nets and allow them to stay close when they are outmatched in other areas. 

Losing Nic Claxton in the trade for Randle certainly hurts, but Claxton looked uninterested for long stretches last year, and a fresh face in the paint will help buoy this franchise. The Nets unquestionably got better with three meaningful additions while only losing Claxton from their starting five, and this could be the year they finally start making waves in the East. 

2026 Brooklyn Nets Season Expectations

The expectations are low in Brooklyn with a 24.5 win total, but there is reason for optimism heading into the new season. They finished dead-last in rebounds last season with the second-lowest net rating being dragged down by their last-place offensive rating. Low efficiency offense coupled with very few second chance points and a bad defense is a recipe for disaster, but the offseason moves have Brooklyn back in the mix. 

Brooklyn elected to keep Michael Porter Jr. as their primary scoring option, who will need to share the ball with another high-volume shooter in Randle. Both men would rather take a low-percentage shot themselves than share the rock, but that should still be an upgrade over a truly lost offense last year. Porter Jr. is capable of getting hot in a hurry, and those kinds of scoring bunches will be needed for a team like the Nets. As long as Brown Jr. can facilitate the offense in his rookie season, which is a big ask, the Nets should look better on both ends of the court. 

While there are some pros with this team, we can’t ignore their flaws from last year that will almost certainly be relevant again. This team didn’t buy in on the defensive side of the floor last year. And while we never know exactly what goes on in the locker room, the personalities they signed may not help. Brown Jr. has defensive issues, Randle is a unique case in himself, but the Nets will be hoping Wagner’s strong defense turns into the narrative that sticks this season. It is not time to start calling for a Nets championship, or even a deep playoff run, but with the new NBA lottery format heavily discouraging tanking, Brooklyn’s motivation to be bad, but not terrible, could lead to a few surprise victories. 

2026 Brooklyn Nets Schedule Breakdown

The Nets alternate home and away games for the first two weeks of the season but never have to go far with trips to Cleveland, Boston, Indiana, and Madison Square Garden. They’ll have the privilege of spending Christmas in New York with a six-game homestand through the holiday period before kicking off a five-game West Coast road trip through the new year. Looking towards the end of January, the Nets have a stretch of nine home games in a ten-game period, which could make or break their season. Finally, they have an eight-game homestand near the end of the year before a four-game road trip before wrapping up the season at home against the Raptors.

The Brooklyn Nets are expected to be right at the bottom of the East with a 24.5 win total, only eclipsing the Sacramento Kings heading into the new year. The odds imply a playoff berth is nothing more than a dream, as Brooklyn has +2500 odds to make the playoffs and +1400 odds to even qualify for the play-in tournament. 

In the NBA Cup, the Nets are in a group with the Pistons, Raptors, Magic, and Bucks. The short format of the NBA Cup means an upset or two probably represents the Nets’ best chance at meaningful basketball this season, but they are still a sky-high +2000 to win the group with +75000 odds to win the NBA Cup.

The Brooklyn Nets will be bad, but will they be the worst team in the league? I’m willing to bet not. Acquiring the talents of Randle, Wagner, and Brown Jr. cannot be overlooked, and the Nets should be better than they were the last few seasons. The Nets were in full-on tank mode for the last three years, but still managed to put 32, 26, and 20 wins on the board. With the new anti-tanking measures in place that heavily penalize the bottom-three teams, Brooklyn could be fighting hard late in the season to get out of the basement. 

They were playing some of the worst basketball in the league with bottom-five ratings on both ends of the floor without collecting any rebounds, yet still put up 20+ wins. We aren’t asking for a dramatic revitalization of this broken squad, just a small upgrade on both ends, and the Nets will suddenly be winning games. The ownership is very dialed in on this franchise’s rebuild and knows how devastating a bottom-three finish would be for their future aspirations. As long as Randle and Porter Jr. can figure out how to share the ball, there is enough talent on this squad to pull off the occasional upset. 

We won’t be going crazy on any NBA Cup or playoff picks, but we will take both Over 24.5 wins and put a small sprinkle on 30+ at +270 odds. The new tanking rules will force bad teams to play better basketball, and that is a strategy I intend to exploit with preseason win totals. A late-season game against the Wizards could be a massive matchup, and when Brooklyn’s players don’t have mysterious injuries, they will start winning.
