Take #265 Pittsburgh (-3) over Houston (Noon, Friday, Jan. 2)
This one is from the Armed Services Bowl and I think this is a good spot. I also have a 6-Unit rated bowl play on Friday as well in a game that I’m really excited for. I am 11-5 in my last 16 6-Unit football plays and this one is a winner. Both of these teams come into this matchup with interim head coaches and that makes this game a fun one to handicap. I love the way the Panthers finished the season as they destroyed Syracuse 30-7 and then won at Miami 35-23 as a double-digit underdog. Pitt's sophomore running back, James Conner, was chosen as an All-American this year and wide receiver Tyler Boyd became the first ACC receiver to ever record 1,000 yards in his freshmen and sophomore seasons. Pittsburgh has definitely played the tougher schedule and they possess the best two offensive weapons in this game. On paper, Houston has the better defense but their strength of schedule, or lack thereof, should be taken into consideration. Free College Basketball Prediction From Robert Ferringo :
Take Detroit (+5) over Wright State (7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 2)
This is my projected line and I’m looking to continue my unprecedented college basketball success. I put the wraps on my ninth straight winning nonconference season this year, banking over $8,000 in profit during a five-week span to start the year. Now we’re getting into league play and how we handicap these games is going to be a bit different. This play is an example of how a team’s record coming out of non-league play can be misleading. Detroit is just 6-8, but if you look at their schedule they have gone toe-to-toe with some really good teams, taking on teams like Oregon, Michigan, Wichita State and Arizona State. They are on a five-game losing streak heading into Horizon Play but I think they are more focused than ever to start fresh in the league and to get this road win. Wright State is coming off an embarrassing 50-point loss against Ohio State. That’s not one you bounce right back from. They swept Belmont in the nonconference, but other than that they don’t have a Top 150 win and they have three losses to teams ranked in the bottom half of D-I. I think this line is fat and there is enough of a window for Detroit to not win the game but still cover. I actually think they will win this one outright but we’ll take the points just in case. Take #836 Northern Illinois (-6) over UC Riverside (8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 2)
I am looking at a 7-Unit NHL Play this weekend to pair with a 6-Unit College Basketball play and I am excited about how things are going after three straight winning months in all sports. I like the job Northern Illinois head coach Mark Montgomery is doing in his 4th season at the school. It’s not easy taking a program as poor as Northern Illinois had been and turning into a decent team like Montgomery has done. The Huskies last had a winning season in 2006 and their best year from 2007-2012 was just 10 wins in a season. After two bad years things finally started to look a lot better last year for the Montgomery led Huskies as they went 15-17 on the year and 8-10 in conference play. This year’s group looks to be again around that level at 5-5 overall on the year. 7 of the 9 guys in the rotation are upperclassmen so this is an experienced group and one that expects to be a decent team. This is a very difficult travel spot for UC Riverside as they travel across the United States to play in this one. It’s their last week of non-conference play for the Highlanders as things kick off in the Big West Conference next week. Head coach Dennis Cutts is in his 2nd season here at UCR and though it looks like he’s taken this program forward a bit so far, I don’t quite get the feeling their at the level of Northern Illinois right now. These two teams did meet up last season but that game was at UC Riverside and Northern Illinois ended up getting the win by a 71-64 score. Take Northern Illinois minus the points in this one. The last two losses were interesting as it was another home loss in a 34-33 game with San Diego, and then just an all-around bad game at Houston. Those losses prepared them for this game. In each game a weakness was pointed out. This Ravens squad, and their coaching staff are pros in every facet of the word. They know what it takes to win big games, and they have a playoff tested quarterback in Joe Flacco. Pittsburgh has been Jekel and Hyde this season, and I see it ending their year this weekend. Baltimore is 4-0 ATS In their last four playoff road games and 12-4 ATS in their last 16 games versus a team with a winning record. Take the points in this one. Take ‘Over’ 5.5 Minnesota at Dallas (8 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 3)
The Minnesota Wild have been a stone cold over team of late and there’s no reason to believe that trend is going to end now. They’ve played seven consecutive games with five total goals or more, with their defense crumbling under any kind of pressure. The back end has been brutal and their goaltending isn’t helping the cause either. The offense knows that they have to score often to stay in the game and that hasn’t been much of a problem either. On Saturday they get the Dallas Stars – a team that won’t mind playing a high-scoring affair as they have the offensive firepower. The last time these squads squared off, the Wild won 5-4 in overtime. We could see a repeat of that score again on Saturday, so we’re going over the total here. Take Donald Cerrone (-180) over Myles Jury (10:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 3)
Besides the main event fight this fight is going to be crazy good and we should see some hard hitting in this fight. Both fighters come in on huge winning streaks but I'm leaning towards experience and Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone has the experience. Myles Jury has won back-to-back fights in 2014 and his name is racing up the rankings in this weight class but I see Cowboy Cerrone controlling this fight from the start and would shock me to see Cowboy take him out in late of the second round. Should be an outstanding fight and I will hurry up and grab this number because I see this fighting ending with Donald Cowboy Cerrone a solid -200 favorite.
