Take OVER 5.5 N.Y. Islanders at San Jose (10 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1)
We have our 6-Unit NHL Game of the Month on Thursday, but here is a free winner for Saturday. We should see plenty of premium scoring chances in Saturday night’s game between the Islanders and Sharks. New York is off to a fairly good start this season, but their defense is still a major problem. They are near the bottom in most defensive categories, including goals against and shots against – the two most important numbers. However, the Islanders have managed a winning record due to a high-powered offensive attack that has shown up in nearly every game. San Jose doesn’t mind playing in a fast-paced affair as they have a few weapons of their own. The Sharks may also be a bit fatigued as they’ve played a league-high 13 games heading into Saturday’s matchup, including tons of travel. That could lead to some defensive lapses and odd-man rushes against them. These teams don’t see one another often, but expect some fireworks on Saturday night. We have a pair of 7-Unit Plays going in football this weekend, and we have produced three of four wining football weeks overall. We are hoping for an even bigger return this week. We like UCLA here for multiple reasons, the least of which is the fact this team finally is back in the top 25 after having a poor set of games and now is back in the national picture somewhat. UCLA has done well against Arizona the last two years, winning by scores of 31-26 and 66-10 overall winning as both -2.5 chalk and +1.5 underdog. What's interesting is after destroying Arizona two years ago and being an underdog last year to an Arizona team that had massive revenge, this team still found it within them to win that contest, which says a lot about the character of the UCLA coaching staff to have their players ready for that trap game. UCLA rolls into this game not having played well against Colorado, barely winning in extra time by a field goal as they were possibly looking ahead to this game. They have lost 4 straight covers, but that changes here as they match up very well against Arizona and they are very familiar with the system that Arizona runs. Note, UCLA is not that much different in makeup to USC, and with the Trojans beating this team earlier this year 28-26, look for UCLA to do a step better here as if Arizona had their troubles against Cal and Nevada, they are going to have their hands full against UCLA. Per our models, we see the Bruins likely winning this contest by about 10 points this evening, and it’s a decent public fade as well to boot which we enjoy, and take an opportunity to fade the public every chance we get. Take #453 Jacksonville (+11) over Cincinnati (1 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 2)
I pulled off a perfect 3-0 Sunday NFL sweep last weekend, and I want to keep my pro streak going with this easy winner on the gridiron. The Jacksonville Jaguars are playing much better football of late. They won their first game of the year two weeks ago and did so in impressive fashion. The game before that was a close two-point loss on the road to Tennessee where the Jaguars were minus two in turnovers for the game. If the Jags could get their turnover issues under control they’d be a much better football team. They look to have found a new running back as well as college star Denard Robinson has put up back-to-back 100-yard games on the ground in his first two games being their main ball carrier. The Bengals stepped up in a big way last game in what was a much-needed win for them over Baltimore. They needed some late game breaks to go their way, including scoring on 4th-and-goal to take the lead and having a touchdown scored against them in the last minute of the game called back due to a penalty on the Ravens. Cincinnati has been struggling of late after a fast start to the season, and this game looks to be the classic sandwich spot here as they face in-state rival Cleveland in their next contest in a big divisional showdown. The Ravens are looking to bounce back in a big way following their difficult loss last weekend. I just don't think Pittsburgh is that consistent to keep that type of play going. This is a big spot for both teams, but Baltimore is just a better football team. The Ravens are also the type of team that won't get caught up in the hype of playing on the road in a big game. They will stick to their game plan and win a tightly-contested battle. With a line this small you just have to pick the winner, and that is exactly what I am doing. Baltimore wins this game. I know that the home teams in this division have done extremely well this season, but this is where the road team gets a W.
