Take 'Over' 8.5 St. Louis at Pittsburgh (7 p.m., Friday, May 25)

We've hit two out of three free plays in this space, and I feel good that we've got another winner here. These are two teams that are starting to hit the ball. Pittsburgh has scored five or more runs - a full run higher than their season average - in six of their last 10 games. The Cardinals have gotten a jolt from their farm system, and they are averaging 5.2 runs per game over their last 10 overall. Take two hot lineups and set them up against two overmatched pitchers, and I think we'll see some runs. John Gant is set to take the ball for the Cards, and this guy is not ready to be an MLB starter. Dating back to last year, in his last three starts he's given up 14 runs in 14 innings, including five runs surrendered against the Phillies in a start that should've been worse. The Bucs are giving Joe Musgrove his first start of the season, and he is trash. Musgrove had an ERA near 5.00 last year in Houston. He's getting called up from Triple-A, but in his last start there he yielded six runs and 10 hits. I see plenty of fireworks in this opener between two teams vying for the top spot in the Central. Plus, Skoglund had done quite well over his last 2 starts with back-to-back quality starts before getting roughed up by the Yankees. But then again, everybody is getting beat by the Yankees these days, frankly, so it's hard for him to take to heart (Yankees coming into Tuesday had scored 20 runs in their last 2 games). Skoglund held Tampa Bay to 2 runs and Whites Sox to 1 run - and even Baltimore to 3 runs prior to that. But they have scored only 23 runs in the other nine games in that 3-7 skid. New York is going with Noah Syndergaard in this series opener against the Brewers. I think he will dominate Milwaukee in this game. Syndergaard has five of six quality starts and just a 2.91 ERA on the season. He has gone 'under' in seven of his last nine starts. If you've been paying close attention, you've noticed that the ball is not traveling well in Arizona with the humidor now in play. We've seen a ton of unders in Chase Field as a result. I think it's really gotten into the heads of the Diamondbacks hitters as several guys are having terrible seasons. The D-Backs have been better offensively away from home, and there's reason to believe in the OVER on Saturday because of it. Arizona will play in Oakland against the A's on Saturday afternoon. Zack Greinke is slated to go for Arizona, and he's really struggled on the road over the last few seasons. In fact, Greinke has some of the worst road splits in baseball over that span compared to his home splits. Trevor Cahill gets the ball for Oakland, and he's perfectly hittable. And after being sent down to the minors a couple of times this season, it looks as though he is here to stay in the majors and in the starting rotation. Flaherty has allowed just one run in three out of his four starts for St. Louis this year, and he has struck out 27 batters over 23.1 innings. Trevor Williams will be on the mound for Pittsburgh, and he has gotten off to a great start, going 5-2 with a 3.05 ERA over his first 10 starts. However, he has been vulnerable over his last four starts, allowing at least three earned runs in three of those contests. I think the Cardinals will be able to plate some runs in this one.
