Alabama has been a fraud for the better part of the last decade, sliding by more on reputation and inflated respect than actual accomplishment. Last year was a perfect example. Playing in a watered-down SEC, Alabama either lost to or barely slipped by any decent team that they played in 2014. Yet they still found themselves in the playoffs and on the doorstep of the National Championship Game.

If the Crimson Tide make it back to the playoffs his year, they certainly will have earned it. With just nine total starters back and a projection of just seven seniors in the Top 22, this could be Nick Saban's weakest group. Add in a schedule that actually has Alabama playing a tough road game or two and there will be no perfect season in Tuscaloosa this year.

Alabama does have the benefit of multiple top-rated recruiting classes. So their reloading is a lot different than what happens at other schools. And Saban's program, which has yielded a 91-17 record over the past eight years, is a proven commodity. Further, of the nine returning starters, seven of them are on the defensive side of the ball. The Tide were No. 6 in the country in scoring defense last year.

The Crimson Tide have a chance to flex in their opener against a rebuilding Wisconsin team that is breaking in a new coach, new coordinators and a whole lot of new starters of their own. That game is on neutral ground in Dallas, and then Alabama plays four of its next five games at home. They do have to go on the road to face Georgia, Texas A&M, Mississippi State and rival Auburn. And there's the yearly battle with LSU as well.

Even the sportsbooks recognize that Alabama's schedule and seasoning leave them a little vulnerable. This is the first time in five years in which they don't have a season win total posted at 10 or 10.5. There are actually six losable games on the card this year. That's a big difference from the normal two tough games a season they've been averaging. However, I won't believe that 'Bama is down until I actually see it. I think the Crimson Tide will lose two regular-season games this year, but I still think they'll manage to tuck 'over' their season win total. And if I am wrong it is because this team bottomed out and only won seven or eight games.
