Kliff Kingsbury's second year was a big step back after a solid 2013. But now the question is whether the Red Raiders are ready to leap back into the top tier of the league or if they are still punching over their weight class in a loaded Big 12.

The Red Raiders offer a lot of flash - they were No. 5 in the nation in passing and No. 10 in total offense - but not much substance. They didn't win a single game against a 2014 bowl team, and outside of a two-point loss against Baylor to end the season they weren't all that competitive in league play. They do have 13 starters back this season, including quarterback Pat Mahomes, and we'll see if this senior-laden crew can put something together.

They have a pair of winnable home games against Sam Houston State and UTEP to open the year before a crucial three-game stint at Arkansas, against TCU and then against Baylor in Arlington.

For Texas Tech to make a big jump they need to get better in two areas. First, their defense was pathetic last year (No. 123 scoring and No. 122 overall). Second, they need to get their turnovers and penalties under control (No. 116 in turnover differential).

However, I am not sure that Texas Tech is going to get to seven wins this year and have to play these guys 'under'. I do think that they will pull a couple upsets and could get to six wins. But the fact is that they are probably around the No. 5 or No. 6 team in a stacked league, and I can't see them winning at OU or West Virginia, games they would need to get to seven W's.
