Take ‘Under’ Cincinnati at Boston (7 p.m., Thursday, June 1)

Chris Sale notched his fifth win of the year when the Boston Red Sox snapped their four-game losing streak by defeating the Diamondbacks last Friday night. Sale did great on the mound for Boston, giving up one run on four Diamondbacks’ hits over five innings while striking out three and walking one. He threw 60.2% of his pitches for strikes (44 of 73 pitches). His only faux pas was giving up two hits in the fourth when Emmanuel Rivera singled, and then Lourdes Gurriel Jr extended his hitting streak to 17 games when he tripled to center, knocking in Rivera. On the flip side, last Friday, in a 9-0 win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, Hunter Greene threw six no-hit innings. The Cubs, a division rival with hitters who have seen Greene often, looked helpless against Greene’s fastball. Hunter is a fantastic pitcher, and we actually faded him here in the newsletter play, which was a mistake as he did very well. We think both of these pitchers get up to face each other here on Thursday night and this contest goes under the posted total. Take Miami (-1.5) over Oakland (6:40 p.m., Friday, June 2)

The A’s are one of the worst teams in MLB history, and I don’t think they are going to get to 50 wins this year. They are giving left-hander Hogan Harris his first career start, and I think he’s going to get slammed. Miami has been excellent against left-handed pitching, and Harris has six walks and six runs allowed in just over five innings of work this year. Take Tampa Bay over Boston (7 p.m., Friday, June 2)

Every team in the American League East is over .500 on the season, so these divisional games are important and going to be tough. The Rays swept four games from the Red Sox in Tampa Bay earlier in the season, and I think they are going to win the first game of this series. Tyler Glasnow will be making his second start for Tampa Bay, as he was brought along slowly this spring. Glasnow threw a surprising 83 pitches in his first outing, striking out 8 Dodgers over 4.1 innings, and I expect him to go deeper into this game to put himself in line for the win. Garrett Whitlock has not been able to get into a rhythm yet this season, as he has made just four starts as he has had some nagging injuries. Whitlock has made two good starts and two bad starts, with one of those bad starts being against the Rays, where he allowed 5 earned runs on 8 hits (3 HR) over 5 innings in a 7-2 loss. The lines aren’t out for this matchup yet since these sides play on Wednesday and this writeup is being composed on Tuesday. But we think we will be getting a real nice number with Colorado at home.
