While the SEC West is absolutely loaded, the SEC East is wide-open for the taking. And after nearly a decade as a doormat program, the Volunteers are in a position to do some major damage as a sleeper team in the SEC.

Last November the Volunteers were sitting at 3-5 and were ready to wind down another disappointing fall. But then the Vols won four of their last five games, including an overtime win at South Carolina and a dominating bowl win over Iowa, and they carried a load of momentum into the offseason.

Tennessee has 17 starters back, and one of the five that left, quarterback Justin Worley, could be addition by subtraction. It was not a coincidence that Tennessee really took off last year after inserting Josh Dobbs as the starting quarterback. He is back, along with nine other dudes, and the Vols should be a lot more potent this year. They averaged 37 points per game with Dobbs under center.

The Volunteers do have to overcome a very tough league schedule, though. They open against a very potent Bowling Green team that could be the class of the MAC. They follow that up with a home game against a Top 20 Oklahoma team. The Vols also drew Arkansas (home) and Alabama (road) out of the West.

I don't think that Tennessee is a Top 20 team. And I don't see a dream season in Knoxville - unless they can somehow upset Oklahoma in the mountains of Tennessee. They're good. They're improving. But their record will be inflated this season thanks to A) playing in the East and B) a cushy November schedule that has them playing three of four at home.

I think Tennessee will get 'over' this year. And it will all come down to winning a road game at Kentucky and a home game against South Carolina late in the year.
