Best NFL Teaser Bets Week 6: Basic Strategy Teasers

If there was ever a love/hate relationship that just never ended, it’s gotta be sports betting on the NFL. First of all, we love football, or we wouldn’t be here. Secondly, sports betting is a lot of fun and can make a boring contest fun, or if we’re lucky, an already exciting game becomes unforgettable as the outcome of our wager hangs in the balance.
Sometimes, we forget how much the game means to millions of other people and only see the outcome and fallout as something we personally have to deal with.
I've always taken pride in my logic, but in NFL betting, you have to set that aside and view each game for what it is. That could be a trap game, a letdown spot, or a sandwich game. Perhaps you don't want to bet on a struggling team like the New York Giants, as they host the Philadelphia Eagles this week on Thursday Night Football. At the same time, though, betting against home divisional underdogs, especially at prices north of a field goal or touchdown in the point spread, is asking for a long night.
One of the first things I learned as a young professional was that long nights often turn into long days. As we age and potentially move forward with our lives and careers, we don't have time for long days spent feeling bummed out about a football wager.
Am I saying to stop betting on sports? Heck no! Just be smart about it.
You don’t always have to beat the line or beat the sportsbook. You can let the efficiency of the market and accuracy of the betting odds work for us instead of against us for once.
How do we do that? Well, we can use teasers for our NFL betting.
Doc’s Sports offers NFL expert picks for every game on our NFL predictions page.
What is a Teaser?
A teaser is a particular type of wager where the bettor can manipulate the line in their favor by adding points to a spread or total. There are many different types of teasers. You can have two legs up to 12 or more.
You can add 4 points, or you may want to add 10. Oh, and this is a type of parlay bet, so it has to be at least two legs.
This is already getting confusing, though. Is there a basic strategy we can use?
What is a Basic Strategy Teaser?
The basic strategy for teasing NFL games is only to do a two-leg, 6-point teaser. This will pay out at hopefully (-120). It used to be (-110), but this is such a strong bet from week to week that the sportsbooks had to lower the payout.
If we want to tease a betting favorite down, the basic strategy is to tease them through the key numbers of 7, 6, and 3. A key number means the most likely point differential or margin of victory we'll see in an NFL game.
Look for favorites of (-7.5) to (-8.5) and tease them down under a field goal to (-1.5) to (-2.5).
If we want to tease an underdog up, we look for teams with betting odds of (+1.5) to (+2.5) and tease them up above a touchdown to odds of (+7.5) to (+8.5).
Potential Week 6 NFL Teaser Games
Philadelphia Eagles (-7.5) at New York Giants (+7.5) Total: 40.5
Our first matchup will be the Thursday Night Football game. We’re potentially looking to tease Philly down. We also have a small point total, which is a good sign because it means our 6 points count for more.
Denver Broncos (-7.5) vs New York Jets (+7.5) Total: 43.5
This game will be from England, and that's really all that's holding me back from adding the Broncos here. They're also coming off of one of, if not the biggest, of young Bo Nix's career after defeating the Super Bowl champs.
Los Angeles Rams (-7.5) at Baltimore Ravens (+7.5) Total: 44.5
The Baltimore Ravens are beyond banged up, and we have yet to see them compete since Lamar Jackson went down. They're at the point of staving off embarrassment, though. I expect a strong showing at home.
Seattle Seahawks (+1.5) at Jacksonville Jaguars (-1.5) Total: 46.5
Another team coming off a highly emotional win is the Jags. The point total isn't low, but it isn't that high either, at just 46.5. I don't see the Jags on a short week beating the Seahawks by double digits.
Detroit Lions (+2.5) at Kansas City Chiefs (-2.5) Total: 52.5
Lastly, the Sunday Night Football matchup between the Chiefs and the Lions is a fun one. The Lions seem like a great play here, teasing them up to (+8.5). Heck, they could win outright.
I don’t like them as a comeback team, though. If KC gets out in front, it could get worse for Dan Campbell before it gets better.
Week 6 NFL Basic Strategy Teaser Pick
Seattle Seahawks (+7.5) and Philadelphia Eagles (-1.5)
Note: If you're reading this after Thursday's game, take the Los Angeles Rams (-1.5) on a long week paired with the Seahawks. Matt Stafford > Cooper Rush
