Betting on sports can produce the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. I don't recommend chasing those highs because even if you catch one of those 8-leg parlay dragons, you'll end up giving the money back over the next few months or years.

We have to be careful what dragons we catch in life because we need to be able to bag those little fire breathers again should we try. I watched my Muay Thai coach, who is from Thailand, turn five bucks into 20 grand in a couple of hours playing blackjack at a local Las Vegas casino.

He wasn't a gambling addict before that day, and he's doing a lot better now, but he was making return trips to the casino almost every day, not trying to make more money but chasing that dragon.

Forgive me for going into disclaimer mode, but parlays and big paydays aren't all they're cracked up to be. There are some ways, however, we can bet a couple of teams together and even manipulate the betting odds in our favor. It's called a teaser.

What is a Teaser?

A teaser is a type of parlay where the bettor can change the line, and in return, the sportsbook changes the payout. It can get confusing as well as tempting to bet too many legs or tickets after we start looking at potential teasers for the week of football.

What is a Basic Strategy Teaser?

The basic strategy we want to employ here is simply to tease through the key numbers of 3 and 7. These are the two most likely margins of victory in an NFL game. We do this with a 6-point teaser and no more than two legs.

To tease and underdog up, we look for teams with betting odds of (+1.5) to (+2.5) and after giving them the 6 points, they're now dogs above a touchdown at (+7.5) to (+8.5). To tease a betting favorite down, we look for odds of (-7.5) to (-8.5), and we take them down through 7 and 3 under a field goal.

Potential Week 7 NFL Teaser Games

Miami Dolphins (+2.5) at Cleveland Browns (-2.5) Total: 39.5

We are looking for games with a low total, and 39.5 sounds good. However, I want no part of the Dolphins, especially on the road. This game might have inclement weather, too. No thank you.

Philadelphia Eagles (-1.5) at Minnesota Vikings (+1.5) Total: 43.5

We might have something here. The Philadelphia Eagles do not appear to be the same team they were last year. The total is small, and bye weeks have been a blessing for teams so far this year.

Indianapolis Colts (+1.5) at Los Angeles Chargers (-1.5) Total: 48

The Colts obviously seem like a solid play here. They've been one of the best teams in the league. Obvious is cool and all, but it soon synonymizes with public, and that's a p word I want no part of.

We have a reasonably high total as well against a good defense on the road.

Washington Commanders (-1.5) at Dallas Cowboys (+1.5) Total: 55

The Cowboys at home can and will score a lot of points, but teasing a game with a total this high while others are so much lower is against our basic strategy. Smaller totals are better because our 6 points are a higher percentage and go much farther.

Atlanta Falcons (+2.5) at San Francisco 49ers (-2.5) Total: 47.5

I actually like the Falcons to win this game outright, so teasing them is a no-brainer. I would rather have a home underdog, but I'll take a top 3 pass defense and top 3 rush offense against a bottom 3 rush offense and a defense that ranks 30th in sacks and hasn't intercepted a pass.
