Jalen Hurts Blood Clot Injury: Betting Impact for Philadelphia Eagles Week 6 and Beyond

Jalen Hurts has been ruled out of the Philadelphia Eagles Week 6 matchup against the Carolina Panthers with a superficial blood clot in his calf. With Andy Dalton having recently been released, Tanner McKee is in line to start with fifth-round rookie Cole Payton listed as the backup quarterback. This injury will dampen the Eagles expectations of pulling off a Week 6 victory and muddies the waters for the Eagles future with no timeline in place for Hurts’ return. The injury stemmed from a Week 4 incident against the Los Angeles Rams where Hurts got cleated. And while he was good to go against Jacksonville in London in Week 5, the blood clot’s movement has forced the Eagles medical staff to rule him out for at least Week 6.

Betting Impact against Carolina Panthers Week 6:
The Philadelphia Eagles were slight +1.5 point home underdogs prior to the announcement of Jalen Hurts’ injury. With Tanner McKee in line to start, the line has shifted to +3.5 for Philadelphia, with the Eagles as +150 underdogs on the moneyline. The total is 38.5, a slight drop from the 41.5 line it was at prior to Hurts’ injury designation.
The Eagles have been without Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith for the last few weeks. And while Smith has the potential to return in Week 6, Barkley is likely to remain sidelined. That leaves the Eagles without their two best skill position players, with their WR1 questionable, all while they continue to figure out life without A.J. Brown after he was traded in the offseason. Once you add in Will Shipley’s and Tank Bigsby’s injuries at running back, the Eagles are incredibly shorthanded on the offensive side of the ball.
McKee is 1-1 as a starter, with both games coming in Week 18 matchups where the Eagles rested Hurts with the playoffs on the horizon. He has also made four other appearances for Philadelphia but only threw passes in two of them and they were both late in blowout victories for the Eagles. In his Week 18 start in January 2025, the Eagles took down the Giants 20-13 with McKee going 27/41 for 269 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. In January 2026, McKee and the Eagles fell to the Washington Commanders 24-17, with McKee going 21/40 with 241 yards and one touchdown and one interception.
McKee is a capable backup with a strong arm, excellent size, and only one interception on 88 career passes, as he is confident in short and intermediate passes across the middle of the field. His lack of accuracy with the deep ball will allow the Panthers to prioritize stopping short completions. Hurts and McKee are not too far apart in terms of pure passing ability, but the difference in their mobility is noticeable. Hurts is famous for his Tush Push on the quarterback sneak, as he has some of the strongest legs in the league. When the pocket collapses, Hurts often makes the right choice in what to do and where to go with the football, while McKee only has seven career rushing yards.
This is a clear downgrade at quarterback for Philadelphia, and it comes at the worst possible time as they look to keep pace in the NFC East after a slow start. Carolina’s secondary is banged up with injuries of their own, but McKee is unlikely to be able to take advantage with limited success going down the field. Once you factor in the other injuries on the offensive side of the ball for Philadelphia, it’s hard to see this already struggling offense moving the ball down the field.
The Eagles offense will struggle, but their defense has looked better in recent weeks, and it is not as if the Panthers offense is a juggernaut to contain. Public money will likely fly in on Carolina’s spread, but with the number at a key point of -3.5, we can’t be too confident on either side. Instead, we will take Under 38.5 at -110 odds. The Eagles have seen more than 38.5 points scored in two of their five games so far, while the Panthers are 2-2 prior to their Week 5 bye. A rested defense for Carolina will shut down Philadelphia, and when the Panthers drain the clock themselves on offense, this will turn into a slog.
Top Pick: Panthers vs Eagles Under 38.5 Points -110
Philadelphia Eagles Futures:
It is hard to know exactly how long Hurts will be out for, but based on previous timelines for similar injuries, it is far from guaranteed he will be back for Week 7. Philadelphia has a Monday Night showdown against the Cowboys in Week 7, then they take on two more NFC East rivals with the Commanders slated for Week 8 and the Giants on deck for Week 9. Right now, Dallas is +115 to win the NFC East, Philadelphia is +290, New York is +300, and Washington is +750. In terms of the playoffs, Philadelphia is +205 to make it and -250 to fall short. These are crucial divisional games coming up for Philadelphia, and we can get ahead of the curve by fading them now, while Hurts still has the potential to play later this year.
In terms of finding value, the best number we can get is on the New York Giants to win the NFC East at +300. The Dallas defense is reeling right now and it is hard to see them turning things around anytime soon, while the Giants have the best defense in the division, and a composed Jameis Winston leading the offense. Even though New York failed to beat Washington last week, they are still 3-1-1 while the rest of the division is 2-3 or worse. You can also take the Eagles to miss the playoffs at -250, but I always prefer hunting plus money on season-long bets.
Pick: New York Giants to Win the NFC East +300
