They did all this with a 23-year-old Drake Maye at quarterback, meaning they could be on their way to once again terrorizing the AFC. However, a historically weak regular-season schedule combined with a breezy path to the Super Bowl has many discrediting the Patriots' Super Bowl run. Can Maye and company prove that last year was no fluke, or will the doubters be right when New England comes crashing down to Earth?

New England Patriots Offseason Recap

The Patriots weren’t happy to sit around and smile about their successful season last year. Instead, they got right to work in an attempt to surround Maye with as much talent as possible. Maye’s relatively cheap rookie contract means New England had plenty of cap space to play with, and they made the most of every penny. Stefon Diggs departed the Patriots after just one season, leaving a barren wide receiver room even emptier. The Patriots pulled out the checkbooks to give Maye new weapons, picking up both A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs.

Brown is one of the NFL’s premier pass catchers and will instantly transform the Patriots' offense. He has eclipsed 1,000 yards in six of his seven seasons, including three straight, and is still in his prime at 29 years old. His monstrous frame allows him to elevate over defenders to make contested catches, and his soft hands ensure once he makes contact, the ball sticks. His off-field issues like fighting with teammates and being a general nuisance can’t be ignored, but Brown is undoubtedly a huge upgrade over Diggs.

To make things even better, Romeo Doubs is also coming to town. Doubs was a part of a consistent but crowded Packers offense over the last four years and is ready for an increased role in New England. He has been getting better with age, and now that Kayshon Boutte has also been traded out of New England, Doubs is the clear WR2.

New England also made some changes in the trenches, but are coming out with roughly the same level of quality as last year. They traded away center Garrett Bradbury and released edges K’Lavon Chaisson and Anfernee Jennings, but their replacements are solid. Alijah Vera-Tucker is a marquee signing at guard, while first-round draft pick Caleb Lomu offers depth for the offensive line. Keeping Maye healthy and upright is the primary goal for this offense, and New England did enough in the offseason to feel confident heading into 2026.

2026 New England Patriots Season Expectations

Anytime a team goes to the Super Bowl, it is hard not to get excited about the following year. While New England’s path to the playoffs and lackluster postseason opposition can be scrutinized, they were still the only AFC team to reach the Super Bowl. Things won’t be as easy this year with a harder schedule and hungry opponents, but the Patriots still have the core with some splashy new additions to make a deep playoff run.

It starts with Drake Maye. Unlike many college stars in the modern era, Maye wanted to get to the NFL as soon as possible and will have just turned 24 when Week 1 kicks off. He patiently sat behind Jacoby Brissett before getting his first start in Week 6 of his rookie year, and the rest is history. He has started all 30 regular-season games for New England and is still developing. His head start means he is the second-youngest starting quarterback this season behind Jaxson Dart, with other “prospects” like Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams, CJ Stroud, and Cam Ward all older than Maye. The New England quarterback is already showing poise in the pocket like few others in the league, making it borderline scary what he may be doing this year and beyond.

While Maye had a lot to do with the Patriots' Super Bowl run, their defense was just as impactful. New England was eighth in yards allowed last season with the fourth-fewest points allowed. The strength of schedule was a factor, but they then went on to allow just 26 combined points across their three pre-Super Bowl playoff games. They generated most of their pressure from the outside or on blitzes, keeping their interior linemen focused on shutting down the run. They finished 26th in the league in sacks, but still found ways to make an impact. A total of 14 Patriots had three or more tackles for loss in 2025, as the pressure came from everyone in the front seven. If New England can once again generate pressure up front while relying on their impressive secondary in single coverage, this will be a very dangerous defensive unit regardless of who they come up against.

2026 New England Patriots Schedule Breakdown

Unlike last year, the Patriots will have to go through playoff opponents if they want to get back to the Super Bowl. They had the second-easiest schedule of all-time last season, with their opponents' combined winning percentage coming in at .391, and played just three teams that finished with a winning record.

This year, New England has the sixth-hardest schedule based on last year’s records, but the 12th-easiest based on the 2026 win totals. Opponents like the Jaguars, Bears, and Dolphins are all expected to regress compared to last year, giving New England a tough schedule on paper that is actually closer to the middle of the pack in reality. They open up the year with three of their first four on the road against the Seahawks, Jaguars, and Bills, which will tell us a lot about where this team is at. They take a trip across the pond to take on the Lions in Week 10 before their Week 11 bye, and have a straightforward final three weeks against the Dolphins, Broncos, and Jets.

The Patriots have a win total of 10.5 with plus money available on the over, putting them in the upper echelon of contenders this year. However, they are still underdogs to win the AFC East with +125 odds behind the Bills (-135). Regarding a playoff spot, New England is expected to sneak in as a Wild Card team with -220 odds to qualify, and has the joint-fourth-best AFC odds at +800 alongside the Texans and Chiefs. They are one of 12 teams with +1800 or shorter Super Bowl odds at +1600, as the oddsmakers are not convinced it will be back-to-back Super Bowl appearances for New England. In terms of individual awards, Drake Maye is fourth in MVP odds at +1000, while A.J. Brown is the Patriot with the next best chance at silverware with +3500 Offensive Player of the Year odds.

It is hard to get an incredibly confident read on this team given what they did last year. Sure, New England had an easy schedule, but they won the games they had to and cruised to the AFC East division title. Things won’t be as easy this year, but I don’t expect this team to suddenly fall off a cliff. A 10.5 win total for a freshly 24-year-old quarterback sounds daunting, but not when you see what the Patriots have done this offseason. Maye made the most of limited weapons last year, and now he has even more to play with as Brown and Doubs join the squad. The New England defense should hold firm, and we will take over 10.5 wins at +115 odds. This squad may regress slightly from 14-3, but assuming they go 4-0 against the woeful Dolphins and Jets before splitting with the Bills, they will just need to go 6-5 across their 11 non-division games. It won’t be easy, and it may go down to the final weeks, but I am calling for New England to finish 11-6 or 12-5 this year.
