NFL Betting Predictions: Week 1 Opening Line Report and Picks

There are few lines more accurate than the closing spreads on an NFL Sunday. With millions of dollars on each side, the oddsmakers are constantly monitoring action and will not hesitate to adjust the line one way or the other. However, the opening lines are far less sharp, and we can consistently stay ahead of the books by locking in our picks early.

Securing an extra point or even half a point on your team of choice may not seem like much, but it can be the difference between winning and losing in the long run. Over the last two seasons, we have gone 62-49-3 against the spread on the opening lines, generating a steady profit along the way.

Game 1: Atlanta Falcons at Pittsburgh Steelers

Opening Line: Pittsburgh Steelers (-3)

Both of these teams have massive question marks heading into the season and are expected to be fringe playoff teams in 2026. Atlanta has a real quarterback battle between Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr., while Pittsburgh is running it back with 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers. Atlanta lost two of its best defenders, one to injury and the other to off-field issues, while Pittsburgh has a coach other than Mike Tomlin at the helm for the first time in two decades. This is a very ugly matchup, and there is no reason we should be getting a full field goal with the Falcons.

Over the last 25 years, 15% of NFL games have finished with a winning margin of exactly three points. The Steelers deserve to be home favorites given the uncertainty in this matchup, but expecting them to win by more than a field goal at least 50% of the time is quite the stretch. Rodgers is far from the quarterback he was during the prime of his Hall of Fame career, and he will be behind a below-average offensive line. Pittsburgh's defense has a reputation for physical football, but this is potentially the shallowest unit to start a season in years.

For the Falcons, there is reason for optimism. Losing James Pearce Jr. for the first eight games of the season and Jalon Walker for the entire season are massive blows, but Atlanta can still compete. Their secondary is truly elite, and they closed out 2025 on a four-game win streak. The Falcons found a way to stay competitive despite truly disastrous quarterback play, and now Tagovailoa or a rejuvenated Penix Jr. may represent a genuine upgrade. We aren’t taking Atlanta to pull off the outright upset necessarily, but this smells like a game that goes down to the wire, and a full three points with the Falcons is hard to turn down.

Pick: Atlanta Falcons (+3)

Game 2: New Orleans Saints at Detroit Lions

Opening Line: Detroit Lions (-6.5)

A three-point margin of victory is the most common in the NFL at 15%, but the seven-point margin is not far behind at 9%. Detroit and New Orleans are nowhere close to one another in terms of talent and expectations this season, making it hard to justify a line under a touchdown for the Lions. Detroit has a truly frightening offense led by Jared Goff in the pocket, Jahmyr Gibbs in the backfield, and two dominant receivers in Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams to target. The Lions had a disappointing, injury-riddled season last year, but they will get a chance to put up an emphatic win in Week 1.

For the Saints, this team will be better than last year, but they are still in salary-cap hell and have a disjointed roster. Longtime running back Alvin Kamara is hurt, Tyler Shough still has plenty to prove, and this Saints defense is far from a coherent unit. The Saints have a very easy schedule this year and will have chances to show off their talent, but it will not be Week 1 against the Lions. Detroit has averaged a stunning 33.9 PPG at home in the last two seasons, and when they run up the score against New Orleans, they will easily cover this spread.

Pick: Detroit Lions (-6.5)

Game 3: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Cincinnati Bengals

Opening Line: Cincinnati Bengals (-3.5)

The Cincinnati Bengals have struggled during the opening weeks of the season in recent years, but that trend comes to an end in 2026. Joe Burrow is as motivated as ever to reach football’s summit, and both he and the Bengals front office know they can’t afford another slow start. In terms of talent on the field, this looks like a one-sided affair. Cincinnati has always had an electric offense with Burrow throwing to Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, but they also now have a reasonable defense. Cincinnati lost Trey Hendrickson in the offseason, but they replaced him with Dexter Lawrence, Jonathan Allen, and Boye Mafe. A strong Bengals front seven combined with lethal offensive play will mean the Buccaneers need to be perfect. Which they won’t.

Tampa Bay is clinging to their last hope of a deep playoff run before they have to blow up the team, and a competitive road game against the Bengals will result in an early defeat. Baker Mayfield lost his biggest weapon in Mike Evans this offseason, and the Buccaneers don’t have a strong run game either. Once the Bengals start racking up points, it will take a miracle for the Buccaneers to secure a backdoor cover. I don’t expect this line to move much before kickoff, but it is still worthwhile to lock in now in case it jumps up to -4 or -4.5.
