NFL Week 1 Line Movements with Point Spread Analysis

Week 1 of the NFL season is here, and the lines have been all over the place since they opened. Injuries, home field advantage track records, and a whole lot of people betting the same side turned a few of these games into completely different bets than they were a few days ago.
Four games moved enough to be worth breaking down and knowing why each one shifted is the difference between locking in a good line and betting a bad one. Here is what happened and what to do about it.
Doc’s Sports offers NFL expert picks for every game on our NFL predictions page.
Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings (Packers -1.5 to Vikings -1)
Nothing says bettors losing faith like watching a favorite become an underdog and flip sides entirely. The Packers opened as a 1.5-point road favorite, but nobody was buying, banking on the Vikings to take care of business at home and cover to kick off the season, leaving Vegas no choice but to flip the spread.
Looking at the matchup, the move makes total sense. Minnesota’s defense is a monster, giving up just 282.6 yards per game last season. Meanwhile, Green Bay's offense is limping into Week 1. Starting running back Josh Jacobs is tangled up in legal trouble, while left guard Aaron Banks and right tackle Zach Tom are both nursing injuries.
There goes Green Bay's run game and protection in one shot, and running that into Minnesota's home defense is a rough way to open a season.
The spread shifted for a good set of reasons, and so should your betting slip. Throwing a banged-up offensive line in front of a tough Vikings defense on the road is a brutal way to start the year. Minnesota is healthier, tougher at home, and should cover.
Cleveland Browns @ Jacksonville Jaguars (Jaguars -7.5 to Jaguars -9.0)
The Jacksonville Jaguars went from a home favorite to a team bettors expect to run Cleveland into the ground, hopping from a -7.5 to a -9 favorite.
So why did the spread get this lopsided? First off, it's the Browns, which alone explains why they are a heavy underdog here. Add in Deshaun Watson as the starting quarterback, who hasn’t taken a live snap since 2024, and their offensive line dealing with setbacks, too. Starting center Parker Brailsford is questionable for Sunday with a hand injury and right guard Teven Jenkins was limited in practice with nagging camp injuries, which has forced backup Austin Barber into the first-team rotation.
Look, nine points is a big number for any NFL game, but the Jaguars have the depth, the home field advantage, and are fresh off a 7-2 ATS season at home last year. Follow the grain and back Jacksonville before the spread takes another leap.
San Francisco 49ers @ Los Angeles Rams (Rams -2.5 to Rams -3.5)
The Rams and 49ers kick off their NFL season on Thursday night in Australia, with no surprise, the line opened with the Super Bowl favorites, the Rams, at -2.5. Bettors didn't think it was enough cushion, forcing the market to push the spread to -3.5 in favor of L.A.
Frankly, I’m surprised this spread hasn’t jumped even further. San Francisco is taking hits on both sides of the ball. Edge rusher Nick Bosa is dealing with a knee issue, linebacker Dre Greenlaw is still working back from his Achilles tear, and defensive back Renardo Green is managing a hamstring tweak. On offense, George Kittle was also limited in practice with an Achilles issue.
The Rams roll into this one healthy, with Matthew Stafford under center and every weapon at his disposal with Davante Adams, Puka Nacua, and Kyren Williams. That matters a lot in a divisional opener against a team dealing with this many question marks on defense.
Do not let the 1-point shift scare you off. Moving from -2.5 to -3.5 is a noticeable change, but San Francisco's defense is in no condition to keep this close.
Arizona Cardinals @ Los Angeles Chargers (Chargers -11.5 to Chargers -9.5)
To hand over or get 10 points is a massive wall in NFL betting, which is why Arizona got backed the second this line opened north of double digits. Oddsmakers wrote the Cardinals off completely after they cut Kyler Murray and handed the offense to Jacoby Brissett, but grabbing Arizona at +11.5 felt like free money for anybody who knows how sloppy Week 1 football can be.
With the betting community dumping its hope on the Cardinals to hang around on the road, Vegas had no choice but to drop the number to -9.5. Two full points looks like a heavy adjustment on paper, and crossing back under the double-digit threshold changes the risk on this bet entirely.
The value on Arizona is mostly gone now, since the whole appeal was getting double digits at home against a Chargers offense that gave up sacks on nearly 10% of dropbacks last season. Defensively, though, Los Angeles was one of the better teams in the league, finishing fourth in fewest passing yards allowed at 179.9 per game and ninth in fewest points allowed on the season. At -9.5, you can trust the Chargers to handle business here.
