NFL Week 2 Line Movements with Point Spread Analysis

Week 1 did exactly what Week 1 always does, which is make everybody look stupid. Arizona won outright as a double-digit dog, the Jets went into Tennessee and took one, and Chicago hung 59 points on Carolina. Results like that send the books scrambling, and the NFL Week 2 lines reflect it.
Six games moved enough this week to be worth breaking down, and most of it traces back to quarterback health and a few teams that either overdelivered or fell flat in the opener. Here is what happened with each one and what to do about it.
Doc’s Sports offers NFL expert picks for every game on our NFL predictions page.
Minnesota Vikings @ Chicago Bears (Bears -3 to Bears -5.5)
Dropping 59 points on any team is worth putting an asterisk next to, and Chicago did exactly that against the Panthers in Week 1, which is the main reason this spread jumped from a field goal to a touchdown.
The bigger factor is on the other sideline though, where Kyler Murray is now under concussion protocol after taking a shot from two Packers defenders in the first quarter. With Carson Wentz likely getting the start, do not be surprised to see the Vikings offense keep this one watchable.
I liked Chicago at -3. At -5.5, not so much. The Bears earned the movement, but paying an extra two and a half points in a division game where the backup already proved he can move the ball is a hard sell.
Carolina Panthers @ Atlanta Falcons (Falcons -1.5 to Panthers -1.5)
Atlanta opened as a 1.5-point favorite and now sits as a 1.5-point underdog, which is a three-point swing and a complete flip of who the market likes. The Falcons walked into Week 1 with quarterback troubles before the first snap of the season, with Tua Tagovailoa nursing an oblique strain, Cooper Rush dealing with back spasms, and Michael Penix Jr. not ready to go. None of it got resolved, though they still kept it close in a 20-13 loss to the Steelers.
Carolina got crushed by 21 points and is still the favorite here, which says a lot about how little faith bettors have in Atlanta right now. This is another divisional matchup and it’s going to be a sloppy one, which is why I am staying away from this one as well.
A three-point flip built entirely on quarterback depth is Vegas playing the guessing game, and no bettor should waste their time getting involved with that.
Green Bay Packers @ New York Jets (Packers -5.5 to Packers -3.5)
Green Bay surprised us all last week, giving up 39 points to a Minnesota offense led by backup quarterback Carson Wentz. Meanwhile, New York went into Tennessee and won outright, but I’m not ready to overreact. The Jets offense did just enough against one of the worst defenses in football, with the majority of their scoring coming from field goals. Now they face a much tougher test on the road.
I’ll take Jordan Love over Geno Smith all day, and I expect Green Bay’s defense to bounce back after getting humbled last week. The Packers should have no problem making life harder on this Jets offense, and getting Green Bay in a teaser gives us plenty of room to work with. Take the Packers.
Miami Dolphins @ San Francisco 49ers (49ers -10.5 to 49ers -13)
Two and a half points is a serious jump on a number that already sat in double digits, but the Dolphins earned it after getting embarrassed by the Raiders. On the other side, San Francisco has had a week's worth of rest after beating the Super Bowl favorite Rams 27-7 in Melbourne last week.
Here is the thing though. The 49ers are the better team on all fronts and it is not close, but 13 points in any NFL game is a lot of space to cover. I would rather grab San Francisco on the moneyline and skip the headache of watching the ‘Phins score during garbage time that costs bettors their ticket.
Detroit Lions @ Buffalo Bills (Bills -3 to Bills -5.5)
Thursday night hands us the biggest game of the week between the Lions and Bills. Detroit needed overtime to squeak past a sloppy Saints team, while Buffalo held on in crunch time for a 36-31 win over the Texans, which pushed this spread a bit in favor of the Bills for their home opener.
Detroit has been dancing on the Super Bowl cusp for the past few seasons just like Buffalo, and the Lions have the talent to take this game. Considering the Bills have the momentum, the home field advantage, and the better pass defense based on Week 1, I'll roll with Josh Allen and Co. to keep this a six-point game.
Philadelphia Eagles @ Tennessee Titans (Eagles -4.5 to Eagles -7)
Tennessee dropped its opener at home to the Jets, and Vegas wasted no time adjusting. Philadelphia has been getting bet all week, and this number pushed through a full field goal before landing at -7.
Even at seven points, taking Philly minus the points is a no brainer here. Tennessee was projected as a bottom-three team going into this season and Week 1 did nothing to prove otherwise, while Philadelphia is still very much a Super Bowl contender. Laying a touchdown against a roster this thin is a bargain, road game or not. Back the Birds at -7 before this number climbs.
