The San Francisco 49ers overcame injuries last year to finish 12-5 before being bounced in the Divisional Round by the eventual Super Bowl champions. The franchise has remained consistent over the last 15 years, reaching and losing in the Super Bowl three times in addition to several other deep playoff runs. Will this be the season San Francisco can finally get over the line, or will it be another year full of positives that eventually end in disappointment?

San Francisco 49ers Offseason Recap

The San Francisco 49ers weren’t satisfied with their strong season last year and got right to work in the hopes of getting even better. Most of their changes were at wide receiver, where the 49ers underwent a complete overhaul. Jauan Jennings, Kendrick Bourne, and Skyy Moore all left San Francisco this offseason. Jennings is the biggest loss as he had a team-high 55 catches and 643 yards among wide receivers. However, his 55 catches on 90 targets is an abysmal catch rate, forcing San Francisco to look elsewhere for a true WR1. Bourne was right behind Jennings with 37 catches and 551 yards, the next most on the team, and will also be missed as he was a reliable deep ball threat for Brock Purdy. Brandon Aiyuk is also still technically on the team; he missed last year due to injury, and his current off-field issues have him still on the sidelines. 

While losing a trio of pass catchers is never easy to overcome, the 49ers got better at wide receiver heading into 2026. Mike Evans is switching teams after spending the first 12 years of his career with the Buccaneers, heading to San Francisco. Evans strung together 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons to begin his career, only falling short last year due to injury. Lingering hamstring issues continue to be a concern for Evans, but when he is on the field, there are few receivers with more reliable hands. The 49ers also brought back Deebo Samuel after he spent last year in Washington. Samuel had a successful career with the 49ers before making the move, and it looks as though he is happy to rejoin the team. Samuel can create his own plays from the backfield; he can rack up yards after the catch with short completions, and is a constant deep ball threat with his speed. San Francisco wasn't done there, as they also brought in Christian Kirk from the Houston Texans. Kirk will start the season on IR, but should get plenty of touches once he returns. Jumping to the draft, the 49ers used the 33rd overall selection, their first pick of the draft, to take De’Zhaun Stribling. Stribling has explosive size and speed, but he is still considered a very raw talent heading into 2026. His route running needs lots of work, but he has reliable hands and is an excellent blocker when he doesn’t have the ball. 

San Francisco made other depth changes this offseason, but it was clear that wide receiver was their point of interest. Losing several pass rushers who were valuable depth pieces will test the strength of this lineup, but the 49ers have done an excellent job at developing talent while they also took two defensive linemen in the first 110 picks of the 2026 draft. In terms of starters, trading a third-round pick for Osa Odighizuwa from the Cowboys was their splash deal of the summer. Odighizuwa is an excellent run stopper in the interior and will be a Week 1 starter for San Francisco. 

2026 San Francisco 49ers Season Expectations 

The expectation in San Francisco is that the Lombardi Trophy will be returning to the Bay Area. This is a franchise accustomed to winning, and recent setbacks have tormented their fans. They are sniffing among the Super Bowl favorites this season, but expectations have been capped in a very difficult NFC West. The Los Angeles Rams are the runaway Super Bowl favorites this year, while the Seattle Seahawks lifted the championship six months ago. The 49ers need to be great to win their division, let alone make the playoffs, but there is no reason they can’t do exactly that. 

Brock Purdy has needed to overcome adversity on his way to becoming a starting quarterback, but there is now no denying his accomplishments. Purdy has been a reliable gunslinger for the 49ers over the last three and a half seasons, quietly amassing respectable numbers. The mainstream media has often discredited Purdy thanks to a strong defense combined with a stunning collection of skill position players, but those echoes are starting to quiet down. Purdy is incredibly accurate, rarely makes mistakes, and won’t force big plays down the field when easy intermediate options are available. A brand new room of wide receivers will give this offense a new look, while Christian McCaffrey continues to dominate the backfield. McCaffrey has been a machine for the 49ers since moving from Carolina, posting 2,126 scrimmage yards with 17 touchdowns last season alone. His ability to not only make players miss in the backfield, but also get involved in the receiving game gives the 49ers a wide-open playbook to implement. As long as he remains healthy, the ceiling for the 49ers is nothing short of the Super Bowl. 

On defense, San Francisco has been remarkably consistent, but this is certainly a ‘prove it’ season. They finished top-ten in yards allowed in four straight years before finishing 20th overall in 2025. They did still finish in the top half in terms of points allowed, but are no longer an elite unit. The spine of their defense from previous Super Bowl runs is still here, but a lack of depth means one injury leaves them hanging by a thread. 

2026 San Francisco 49ers Schedule Breakdown

The 49ers have the 8th-easiest schedule in terms of projected 2026 win totals, but it is still far from a cakewalk. San Francisco opens up the season in Australia against the Super Bowl favorites, the Los Angeles Rams, giving them a massive road trip before Week 2 against Miami. They do have the privilege of three straight home games after their international trip, but then have five of their final seven games of the season on the road as a result. The 49ers' trip to Australia isn’t their only international vacation this year, as they also head down to Mexico to take on the Vikings in Week 11. The traveling is far from ideal for the 49ers, but the opponents don’t get much easier. Of course, two divisional games apiece against the Rams and Seahawks are difficult, but they also have two against the Cardinals, and one against the Dolphins, Raiders, and Giants. 

2026 San Francisco 49ers Betting Odds

The San Francisco 49ers have a win total of 9.5 this season, a number they have eclipsed in four of the last five seasons. There is a lot to like about the 49ers' new-look offense, but there are still major question marks on defense, stopping the oddsmakers from bumping this total up higher. The 49ers are expected to finish third in the NFC West behind the Rams and Seahawks, with +320 odds to win the division. They are expected to make the playoffs as a Wild Card team with -140 odds to qualify, but the path to a postseason berth is far from secure for a team with +1800 Super Bowl odds. 

In terms of individual awards, the 49ers have a few candidates. Brock Purdy comes in with MVP odds of +1800, while Christian McCaffrey has +1600 odds to win Offensive Player of the Year. McCaffrey is widely considered to be a top-three running back in the league and is a perennial contender for the award, while Purdy’s offensive weapons could allow him to rack up absurd numbers himself. Looking at Comeback Player of the Year, the 49ers have several frontrunners. Fred Warner and George Kittle each have +2800 odds to win while Nick Bosa is just behind with +3300 odds. Bosa is also a contender for Defensive Player of the Year with +2800 odds there too. 

2026 San Francisco 49ers Season Predictions and Best Bets

San Francisco entered each of the last three seasons as one of the Super Bowl favorites, and is once again back near the top of the list with the 8th-shortest odds. However, their 9.5 total is closer to the middle of the pack, meaning the oddsmakers see this team as a real boom-or-bust candidate. It would surprise no one if the whole team gets hurt and the 49ers go 6-11 as they did in 2024, but it would also surprise no one if things came together and they went back to the Super Bowl. 

I’m going to be betting on a doomsday in San Francisco rather than the stars aligning. 

I am not a fan of taking their standard win total at 9.5, and would rather look towards alternative lines at plus money. Securing a plus-money price on a wager that will remain active for several months is always preferred, as less of your bankroll needs to be tied up to still secure a sizable payout. For the first pick, we will take San Francisco to miss the playoffs at +115 odds. The 49ers are expected to be the third-best team in their division, leaving little margin for error if they hope to get a Wild Card spot. This is a fantastic price for a team with a 9.5-win total, as they may need 10, or even 11 wins to make the playoffs. 

For the next pick, we will take Under 7.5 wins at +400 odds. This is obviously way less likely than taking under their standard win total. However, if things go south early for the 49ers, this number could be in play. San Francisco went 6-11 in 2024 with a preseason win total of 10.5, and their lack of depth means a couple of key injuries could see them bottom out. If you want to get really crazy, you can take the 49ers to finish last in the NFC West at +1000 odds, but Arizona would need to surpass expectations for this to even be in play. We will stick with the +400 odds on under 7.5 wins, and hope the losses pile up early for the 49ers.
