What will we see from Jayden Daniels? The Heisman Trophy winner burst onto the NFL scene to lead the Commanders to a 12-5 record, won not one, but two playoff games, and gave the franchise their first taste of victory in nearly two decades. However, his sophomore season did not go to plan as he was limited to just seven games, only completed 20 or more passes once, and Washington ended up 5-12 after starting the season 3-2. Now that Daniels has had plenty of time to heal his injuries, and Washington has completely gutted their roster, there is growing buzz around the Commanders. Can the Commanders capture lightning in a bottle and get back to the NFC Championship game, or will it be another year of disappointment for Washington?

Washington Commanders Offseason Recap

Washington had no choice but to clean house this year with an aging roster and a league-worst defense, and they did exactly that. Starting on defense, Washington shipped out big names like Bobby Wagner, Marshon Lattimore, and Von Miller, clearing the path for fresh help. Washington was dead last in yards allowed last year, as they were too slow in the middle of the field and lacked the explosiveness up front. Players like the aforementioned trio can still be impactful in the twilight of their careers, but when they are the leaders of a defense, things can go south quickly. 

In terms of additions, Washington has no shortage of able bodies to replace those snaps. Odafe Oweh was their big veteran addition this offseason, as the former Charger racked up 7.5 sacks last season and is in the prime of his career. He will join another new arrival in Tim Settle as a defensive line starter and will need to make an impact up front this season. The Commanders weren’t done there, as they have two new linebackers who will hopefully solidify their defense. Leo Chenal won two Super Bowls as a starter on the Kansas City Chiefs and is a young talent Washington got for cheap from Kansas City. Chenal brings constant violence to the tackle box with his hard hits and will be the perfect pairing for potential franchise cornerstone Sonny Styles. Washington took Styles with the 8th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and he is expected to make an immediate impact. Styles uses his high IQ to make the right reads on the field, and has no shortage of physical talent to make the plays he needs to. Once you add in more depth in the secondary with new arrivals Nick Cross and Amik Robertson both slated to start, this Washington defense could become respectable. 

On offense, Washington was more tactical with their moves. They made the tough decision to move on from Deebo Samuel, Austin Ekeler, and Zach Ertz as they looked to get younger at the skill positions. Rachaad White replaced Ekeler as the RB2 behind Jacory Crosky-Merritt, while Washington picked up Chig Okonkwo at tight end. Okonkwo is coming off the best season of his career with the Titans, and led all Tennessee pass catchers in receiving yards last season. Daniels and Ertz had quite the partnership in the middle of the field, and with the other tight ends in Washington being primarily run blockers, Okonkwo should have plenty of chances to move the chains. The Commanders also picked up Stefon Diggs in free agency, giving Terry McLaurin some much-needed help at wide receiver. Diggs is past his prime, but he was a major reason the Patriots went to the Super Bowl last year, and will have plenty of motivation as he returns to his hometown. 

2026 Washington Commanders Season Expectations

The Washington fanbase got sparked to life when Jayden Daniels joined the roster, and the expectations will be another deep playoff run for the Commanders. Daniels already proved that he can be one of the best quarterbacks in the league when healthy, but he needs to stay on the field. It wasn’t just Daniels who got hurt last year, as 16 Week 1 starters missed a total of 103 games. It is hard to find any momentum when the roster is always changing, and Washington found out the hard way that the most important ability is availability. The worst part? This year could be even worse. Laremy Tunsil will start the season on IR, and could miss the entire year after Washington mortgaged their future to protect Daniels’ blindside. They shipped out center Tyler Biadasz, and now new starter Nick Allegretti is also hurt, leaving an already struggling offensive line in an even worse position. On defense, Jer’Zhan Newton is probably out for the season with a torn pec, Deatrich Wise is still hurt from last year, while Trey Amos will also miss at least the first four games.

There is no denying that a long list of injuries will dampen the excitement heading into the year; a few plays from Daniels could quickly change the mood. The ‘Cardiac Commanders’ pulled off four fourth-quarter comebacks in 2024 and now have an arguably stronger supporting cast around Daniels. The partnership of Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs gives Washington its best receiver tandem in years, and a revamped running back room will take some of the pressure off Daniels. As long as their offensive line can hold up, Washington could quickly remind the league what they can do on offense. 

Defense is another story. This unit ranked last in the league in yards last season, and even several changes may not be enough. Washington finds success when they play complementary football, and that was not the case in 2025. Maybe Styles, Oweh, and Chenal will be the impact players the Commanders need, but that is an awful lot to ask. The stars would have to align as they did in 2024 for Washington to make another deep playoff run, but crazier things have happened. 

2026 Washington Commanders Schedule Breakdown

The Commanders have a potentially challenging 2026 ahead with the eighth-hardest schedule in the NFL. There are no easy games in the NFC East, while matchups against the AFC South and NFC West are far from easy. The Commanders open up their schedule with a brutal stretch of three games, and could very well be 0-3 when they head to London to take on the Colts in Week 4. They take on the Eagles and Cowboys on the road before hosting the Seahawks in Week 3. Things don’t get any easier after they return from Europe, as they take on the Giants, 49ers, Eagles, and Rams the following four weeks. If Washington can survive the early gauntlet with a .500 record, they will be in great shape as things lighten up in the second half of the season. 

2026 Washington Commanders Betting Odds

The Washington Commanders were one game away from the Super Bowl in 2024 with preseason odds of +25000. They then went into 2025 with +1700 Super Bowl odds and proceeded to fall flat on their face. This year, the oddsmakers have them closer to the middle with +6500 Super Bowl odds, but there is no doubt they are expected to struggle. The Commanders' win total is at 7.5 with +100 odds on the over, while they have +550 odds to win the NFC East and +255 odds to make the playoffs. 

In terms of individual awards, Jayden Daniels has a shot at the MVP award with +3000 odds, but he is more likely to win Comeback Player of the Year at +550. Meanwhile, rookie Sonny Styles has +750 odds to win Defensive Rookie of the Year, while Dan Quinn is coming in at +2800 to win Coach of the Year. 

2026 Washington Commanders Season Predictions and Best Bets

If I had to sum up the Washington Commanders in one sentence, it would be this. A healthy Jayden Daniels raises the floor of this franchise, but a mounting injury list caps their ceiling. I think the oddsmakers are being a bit harsh with a 7.5-win total for this team, but it is hard to argue with their place behind the Super Bowl favorites. Daniels has already shown that he can step up in clutch moments and win this team games, and this line is not respecting that fact. I’m not calling for the Commanders to win the Super Bowl, or even make the playoffs, but they will be hovering around .500 more often than not.

For the first pick, we will take Washington over 7.5 wins at +100. I often like chasing longer odds for season-long bets that tie up our bankroll, but I don’t think this team approaches double digits. They will start slow, get healthy, then take advantage of their late-season scheduling for a backdoor cover. The front office did a lot right in the offseason, and they will be rewarded with some semi-meaningful football down the stretch. 

For the second and juicier pick, we will take Jayden Daniels to win MVP at +3000. Daniels received 49 of the 50 first-place votes for Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2024 and came into the 2025 campaign with +750 MVP odds. Injuries derailed that momentum, but we aren’t seeing someone like Joe Burrow (+850 MVP odds) being punished as much. This is a solid ‘buy low’ spot on the Commanders, but an even better opportunity on Jayden Daniels to win MVP.
