Which NFL Teams Have the Biggest Local Economic Footprint?
By Josh Schonwald
NFL teams bring large crowds, consumer spending, and media attention into their home markets. A new report by Doc's Sports examines 2025 NFL home attendance alongside metro population data. The results show that football's local footprint is highly uneven. Small-market teams can generate enormous fan activity relative to the size of their city.
Key Takeaways
- The Green Bay Packers had the largest NFL local-attendance footprint. Their 622,788 total 2025 home attendees equaled 189% of the Green Bay metro population.
- The Cowboys drew the most total NFL home fans in 2025, with 743,934 attendees across eight games, creating the league's largest recurring game-day audience.
- Game-day spending is real and concentrated around stadiums. Bank of America found card spending rises about 77% in NFL stadium ZIP codes on game days, especially for food, drink, parking, and lodging.
Average NFL Game-Day Crowd
In the 2025 regular season, average home attendance shows the typical size of each team’s game-day crowd. Across the 32 NFL franchises, average home attendance varied from 58,126 for the Bears to 92,991 for the Cowboys. The difference of 34,865 fans per game illustrates how widely the local consumer opportunity can vary from one stadium district to another.
A single NFL home game does not transform a metropolitan economy by itself. But over eight or nine home dates, the largest-drawing teams produce hundreds of thousands of concentrated visitor trips into stadium areas, supporting spending on hospitality, parking, food, beverage, and retail.
Which NFL Teams Draw the Most Local Traffic?
Total 2025 home attendance shows which teams brought the most fans through their stadium gates over the season. There is a clear hierarchy in recurring stadium-area foot traffic.
NFL Teams With the Most Total Home Attendance
These teams recorded the NFL’s largest cumulative home crowds during the 2025 regular season.
- Dallas Cowboys: 743,934
- Denver Broncos: 677,305
- Kansas City Chiefs: 661,146
- New York Jets: 660,246
- New York Giants: 638,295
- Buffalo Bills: 637,896
- Houston Texans: 637,391
- Baltimore Ravens: 632,654
- Green Bay Packers: 622,788
- Pittsburgh Steelers: 604,923
Dallas sits above every other franchise, averaging 92,991 fans per game. The Broncos, Chiefs, Jets, Giants, Bills, Texans, and Ravens each also drew more than 630,000 total fans, making them the most consistent sources of recurring game-day traffic in their markets.
NFL Teams With the Lowest Total Home Attendance
These teams recorded the smallest cumulative home crowds during the 2025 regular season, often reflecting stadium capacity as much as demand.
- Chicago Bears: 465,014
- Arizona Cardinals: 508,197
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 509,124
- Washington Commanders: 514,362
- Detroit Lions: 516,719
- Tennessee Titans: 530,037
- Minnesota Vikings: 534,738
- Seattle Seahawks: 549,924
- Philadelphia Eagles: 559,032
- New Orleans Saints: 560,290
The Bears had the smallest total home crowd because they averaged a league-low 58,126 fans across eight home dates, a function of Soldier Field's league-smallest capacity rather than their schedule. The Titans also had one of the smallest average crowds, at 58,893 per game.
New Orleans is a useful reminder that raw totals can mislead. The Saints appear near the bottom of this list, but they play in one of the smallest metros in the league, and their season attendance still equals more than half the local population, a point the next section makes explicit.
Which Teams Matter Most Relative to Their Market?
Comparing 2025 home attendance with 2023 metro population shows where NFL crowds loom largest relative to the surrounding market. Raw attendance favors large stadiums and major metros. To better identify where a franchise has the largest local presence, total season attendance can be compared with metro population.
Largest Attendance Footprint Relative to Metro Population
Comparing 2025 home attendance with metro population shows where NFL crowds loom largest relative to the local market.
- Green Bay Packers: 189%
- New Orleans Saints: 57%
- Buffalo Bills: 55%
- Jacksonville Jaguars: 35%
- Kansas City Chiefs: 30%
- Indianapolis Colts: 28%
- Cleveland Browns: 27%
- Tennessee Titans: 26%
Green Bay is the overwhelming outlier. Across eight home games, Packers attendance was nearly 1.9 times the size of the entire Green Bay metro population. That does not mean every attendee came from outside the metro, since repeat visitors count across the season, but it does show how central the franchise is to the region's consumer activity and identity.
New Orleans and Buffalo also stand apart. Their total home attendance amounted to more than half of the metro population, making football weekends unusually prominent relative to the size of their local economies.
Kansas City reinforces the pattern from the spending side. The Chiefs rank fifth on this measure at 30%, and Bank of America's card-spending analysis separately identified Kansas City as the franchise with the largest local game-day spending impact in the league.
How Market Size Changes the Rankings
Adjusting 2025 attendance for metro population reshuffles the league’s crowd hierarchy.
Adjusting for market size changes the order a lot. Fifteen of the 32 teams move at least ten spots between the two rankings. New Orleans jumps 21 places, from 23rd in raw attendance to 2nd. Tennessee climbs 19 places, from 27th to 8th. The shift is even sharper at the other end. The Jets and Giants each drew more than 638,000 fans in 2025, both top-five totals. But they finish 31st and 32nd on footprint, because those crowds are spread across a metro of nearly 20 million people. What it does is separate two different things: teams that draw big crowds, and teams whose crowds are big compared to the market around them. It is the second group where game-day traffic makes up a real share of local spending.
What the Local Economy Gains
Football clearly creates concentrated commerce. Bank of America’s February 2026 analysis found that NFL game days are associated with a 77% increase in total card spending within host-stadium ZIP codes, with food and drink, parking, and lodging seeing the largest gains.
But it is important not to confuse this neighborhood-level effect with broad metropolitan growth. Research examining NFL teams, college football programs, and major events has generally found little evidence that home games, winning percentage, championships, or stadium construction meaningfully increase metro-wide personal income, employment, or GDP. Much of the visible spending is also substituted from other local entertainment spending, rather than representing entirely new money entering the region.
The better interpretation is that football benefits specific businesses and stadium districts most directly. Those gains can be especially meaningful in smaller markets such as Green Bay, Buffalo, and New Orleans, where game-day traffic represents a much larger share of the local consumer base.
Data by Team
Methodology
NFL data covers all 32 franchises and combines total and average final 2025 home attendance with 2023 metro-level population estimates.
The local-footprint measure divides a team's full-season home attendance by its metro population. It is intended as a comparative indicator of recurring game-day activity relative to market scale; it is not a count of unique visitors, a direct measurement of visitor spending, or a formal regional economic-impact estimate. The broader interpretation is also bounded by research showing that stadium-area spending often does not translate into a comparably large metro-wide increase in income or employment.
