2024 NFL Coach of the Year Predictions and Betting Odds
It's now Thanksgiving week, officially Week 13 of the 2024 NFL regular season, and as the weather quickly turns, the competition at the top of the league heats up. Injuries are mounting for some teams like the San Francisco 49ers, while teams like the Philadelphia Eagles have won 7 straight after getting healthy.
You won't, however, see either head coach's respective names near the top of the list for 2024 NFL Coach of the Year. Not many expected Kyle Shanahan. However, for those just looking at a team's performance and record, one would think Eagles' head coach Nick Sirianni would get some consideration. Instead, the coach of the betting favorite behind the Lions and Chiefs to win the Super Bowl has odds of 75-1 to win the award, with 13 names ahead of him.
I'm interested to see how they perform in the postseason. I see him more as a facilitator than a leader. However, in the NFL, less can be more from a head coach because he has plenty of smart minds working under him in the right places.
I bring up Sirianni not because I think he should be the coach of the year but because it's an example of how fickle the award can be. The Eagles have new defensive and offensive coordinators who do a great job. And with the addition of Saquon Barkley, everyone on that team can forget about winning any of these awards.
The same goes for someone like Ravens’ head coach John Harbaugh. He has several things working against him winning the award. His betting odds of 150-1 are wild when you see how well his team has played most of the time.

Betting Odds to Win NFL Coach of the Year
The voters are looking for difference-makers, head coaches who have immediately made an impact on their team's success but who still knows when to let their coordinators do their job. It helps to have not won the award in the past. However, to the surprise of many, Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski won the award for a second time in 2023.
We have several previous award winners amongst the betting favorites, including the returning Jim Harbaugh, the forever-consistent Mike Tomlin, and the Midwest Santa Claus Andy Reid.
Dan Campbell: +175
Sitting atop the betting board is the Detroit Lions' Dan Campbell. The 6'5" 265 Campbell is as aggressive on the sidelines with his play calling as his freakish frame. Popularity is a part of this award, and Campbell, while as intimidating as he wants to be, is a teddy bear. What? You can't see it?
Many believe he should have won the award last season over Stefanski. Members of the media who voted for Campbell feel like they weren't heard, and they like to be heard. The hammer is coming this time around. It's his award to lose.
Kevin O’Connell: +400
It’s nice to see Kevin O’Connell get the recognition he deserves. The work he has done to revive the career of quarterback Sam Darnold is superb. The Vikings have come down to earth since their hot start, but his team is 9-2 and winners of 4 straight.
Hurting O'Connell's chances is the same guy helping him win games, his defensive coordinator, Brian Flores. They're quite the team, and I'm sure O'Connell would rather have him than an award.
Jim Harbaugh: +450
Much like O'Connell, Harbaugh is a quarterback whisperer of a coach. He got the most out of J.J. McCarthy at Michigan. It will be interesting to see how the kid does in Minnesota. Digressing back to Harbaugh, I love his chances this season.
We spoke of "Immediate" impact, and Harbaugh has clearly been that for his quarterback, Justin Herbert, and his team.
Sean Payton: +475
Continuing with the QB whispering theme, Sean Payton has made Bo Nix look pretty darn good this year. The Broncos quarterback is now just a (+120) underdog to Jayden Daniels (-155) to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.
We knew the defense was good, but not much was expected out of the Broncos this year. Their preseason win total was set at 5.5. It's now 9.5.
Payton did lose handily this season to both Harbaughs, however.
Mike Tomlin: +650
Mike Tomlin has done a tremendous job this season. The Steelers were expected to finish 3rd or maybe even last in the AFC North. Instead, here they are in Week 13 in sole possession of 1st place.
Tomlin has played the quarterback situation perfectly. His front office traded for Justin Fields, so they gave him a chance. Russell Wilson is the much better fit, and he's the QB. Compare how he handled this to the two-month mess the Colts went through with their quarterback situation.
Jonathan Gannon: +1200
Flying under the radar this year is the Cardinals’ Jonathan Gannon. I’m still not sold, though, on how he handles a frustrated/lazy Kyler Murray.
Matt LeFleur: +1600
Nothing has been easy this year for Matt LeFleur and the Green Bay Packers. They’ve already had to deal with not one but two lower body injuries to their star quarterback, who must have great technique incorporating his legs in his throws because he keeps throwing the ball to the other team.
I feel for LeFleur, and he still has a chance to win this award. If they can beat both the Vikings and the Lions on the road, I like Lefleur to maybe win this thing.
Dan Quinn: +1600
Dan Quinn has done an incredible job thus far, but his offense has hit a wall. Daniels's production has decreased dramatically after his rib injury. It could be that and/or the midseason regression we are accustomed to seeing from offensive coordinator Kyle Kingsbury.
Andy Reid: +2500
Okay, what does this guy do, just stand there now? He isn’t currently coaching a team riddled with injuries to the best record in the NFL at 10-1? Reid has won the award in the past. However, it hasn’t happened since 2002. The Chiefs have won three Super Bowls since then. Maybe give some credit to the big Chief.
NFL Coach of the Year Best Bets
Dan Campbell: +175
People love this guy. He was robbed last year. His team is destroying people. I would bet a decent chunk now on Campbell as the Lions could lose two, maybe even three more games this year, and he would still be the favorite.
Jim Harbaugh: +450
I’m writing this before the Harbaugh Bowl matchup between the Ravens and the Chargers. I don’t mind a sprinkle here on Jim, though. He has the best value of any coach in his odds range.
Matt LeFleur: +1600
He may be the best offensive mind in football today, and he's been unlucky this year. The voters know that, which helps, but it's still an uphill climb for LeFleur and the Pack.
Andy Reid: +2500
I was shocked Reid has only won this award once, and that was over 20 years ago. To say he is due for another is an understatement. It's Thanksgiving week, and the Chiefs just recently lost their first game.
Considering the injuries to the offense, Patrick Mahomes throwing 11 interceptions so far, and the surprise success of divisional foes the Broncos and the Chargers, I rate Reid’s coaching as high as anyone.
