Take #264 Atlanta (-2.5) over Tennessee (7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 14)
One of the best angles to play in the NFL Preseason is riding a new head coach in their first game, especially when it takes place at home. That is the situation we find tonight as the Dan Quinn era gets underway in Atlanta. We will lay the points tonight as they face a terrible team in Tennessee with a coach that is already on the hot seat despite being in just his second year in Nashville. Ken Whisenhunt does not put much stock into the preseason, going just 10-19 straight up and 10-18-1 against the spread. He is putting all of his chips behind QB Marcus Mariota, and I just do not see that as a winning proposition. Mariota may get more playing time than most starting quarterbacks do in this game, but I do not necessarily believe that is a good thing since his back-ups may be better suited at this stage to move the football and score points. Take the Falcons in this game to win, as we expect it to come by double digits. Take Baltimore over Oakland (7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 14)
The Orioles are back home after their long West Coast road trip. They do get a day off before they have to resume playing, though. That is key. That day off will help take some of the sting out of their travel. The Orioles just played in Oakland last week, and they took two of three from the A's, winning by seven runs and by four runs. I think now that the Orioles are back home it will be even uglier. And I expect Baltimore to jump on the A's in Game 1 here. The Orioles have been shuffling around their pitchers recently and extended their rotation. But I think they will go with Kevin Gausman in this one. He is ready to bounce back after an awful start in Los Angeles. But before that he had back-to-back quality starts. The A's are just 15-37 in their last 52 games as a road underdog, and the A's are 3-9 in their last 12 games against the American League East. Play the home team in this one, and the Orioles need to win this game worse than the A's. Take 'Under' 37.0 Denver at Seattle (10 p.m., Friday, Aug. 14)
We are just weeks away from the return of The NFL 411 System! I do not bet the NFL Preseason. It's too unpredictable. But there is some easy money this weekend. I actually think that you should bet 'under' in all 16 games. If you had done that, betting 'under' in the first week of the preseason, over the last 10 years you would've made a healthy profit. Just look at the Hall of Fame Game. There were just 17 points scored in that one, and the defense dominated. That is always how it is in Week 1. The defense dominates and is way ahead of the offense. I think that will be the case in this game. These two teams met last year in the preseason opener, and it ended in a 21-16 game. Both of these teams are Super Bowl contenders. They aren't going to use any of their best players and they don't have anything to prove. These two teams just want to leave healthy. Take 'Over' 7.0 Washington at San Francisco (10 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 15)
It's hard to trust either of the starting pitchers in Saturday's game between the Nationals and Giants. Gio Gonzalez and Jake Peavy have both seen better days as neither has found a groove in 2015. Gio has respectable numbers across the board, but he hasn't dominated hitters like he has for long stretches in each of the last five seasons. Peavy is well past his prime at the age of 34, and every start seems like a struggle for him. His numbers are solid, but his problem has been getting deep into games. We will see the bullpens at work for both teams in this game, and that should bode well for the opposing offenses. The Nats are finally healthy, and their lineup has a lot more firepower than earlier in the season. The Giants have also been swinging the bats better with Hunter Pence in the middle of the order. This one should be able to get OVER the total. Take San Francisco 49ers 'Under' 7.0 Wins (-155) (January 2016)
This is a lot of juice to lay on a win total here, so if you can find 6.5 at -110 or -115, feel free to play it because there's a chance that the 49ers could be the worst team in the NFC this season. They have lost too many players on defense to list, and they really have left Colin Kaepernick with no weapons on the offensive side of the ball. Justin Smith, Patrick Willis and Chris Borland are all gone from a defensive unit that wasn't all that great last season, and while he was probably going to be suspended to start the year, Aldon Smith was someone that the Niners thought they could count on once he was back. That plan went up in smoke late last week when the team decided to cut him after Smith had another run in with the law. Bringing in Torrey Smith will help a bit on the offensive side of the ball, but he's not really a No. 1 at this point in his career, and with nobody else behind him, teams are going to be able to shut him down on the deep ball. Throw in the fact that the three other teams in the division all improved in the offseason, and we're laying the big price on the under here on the 49ers because if they struggle early, they are going to mail it in and possibly be a 3-4 win team when it's all said and done.
