Take Minnesota over LA Clippers (10:30 p.m., Thursday Jan. 19)
Easy free pick winner last week in this spot with the Denver OVER for their game in London. Chris Paul is out 6-8 weeks after having surgery on his hand. Blake Griffin is also out for the Clippers. Say what you will about the strength of this bench, but you just can't argue the fact that this Clippers team doesn't play well without their main two guys. They are 3-9 since the start of the season when Paul and Griffin are out. In the past two seasons they are 5-12 with Paul out of the lineup. He makes everyone around him better, and when the team has to count on DeAndre Jordan as the leader and main focus then there are some big problems. Take Elon (-8.5) over Drexel (7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19)
It was an easy free play winner last week with Utah thrashing USC. Let's see if we can get another one here. Drexel is coming off a rare win, blowing out fellow CAA bottom-feeder Delaware 76-60 over the weekend. Now they have to go on the road, and I expect them to come back to reality. Only two of their 11 losses this year have been by fewer than eight points, and this team hasn't been competitive on the road in league play. First-year head coach Zach Spiker is doing what he can. But the fact is that the Dragons are completely rebuilding their program in the post-Bruiser Flint era and this team is simply overmatched. Elon is a mid-tier CAA team. But they've been pretty good at home, beating Towson and Hofstra - two teams much better than the Dragons - by double digits in North Carolina. Drexel starts two freshmen and they are a young, small team. I think they are primed for a letdown after their big win and they are going to try to beat Elon at their own game, relying on shooting and scoring rather than defense and athleticism. Take 'Over' 5.5 Toronto at Ottawa (7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 14)
The Toronto Maple Leafs are back. Well, not all the way back to where they were in their glory days. But the Leafs finally have a competitive team on the ice and they're also the youngest team in the NHL. Offensively this team is gifted, and that's pushed them to the top 5 in goals per game in the league. Defensively, they are still trying to figure things out (19 th in goals allowed per game). That comes with youth, and we'll certainly see improvement defensively as the season goes along. However, right now the only way to play Toronto games is OVER the total while they continue to make mistakes in their own zone. On Saturday they go up against the Ottawa Senators. The Sens usually like to play at a little slower pace and grind, but I don't think they're going to have a choice against the Leafs. They'll be forced to capitalize on Toronto's mistakes, and that will lead to an easy goal or two for them at some point. One thing to point out is Toronto's propensity to jump out to early leads, only to cough it up later on (usually in the third period). The Leafs are actually third in the NHL in minutes with the lead this season, but they're tops in the league in giving up the lead when they have it. This pick falls into one of my top NFL systems and the Falcons are the better overall team at home Sunday. Matt Ryan is set for an absolutely epic day against this Packers secondary that is ranked dead last in the NFL in allowing the most passing yards this season. The Falcons have averaged 33.8 PPG this season, which is No. 1 in the NFL, and they just destroyed a very good Seahawks defense by putting up 36 points against them. To put that 36-20 rout in perspective, the Seahawks allowed an average of just 18.3 PPG this season, which is 3rd best in the NFL, and now the No. 1 offense in the NFL faces a Packers defense that has allowed 28.6 PPG on the road this season. The Falcons have completed 72.3% of their passes at home this season, and the Packers opponents have a completion percentage of 68.4% against them on the road this season. The Packers are just 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games after allowing 30 points or more in their previous game, and the Falcons are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games after putting up more than 30 points in their previous game. The Cowboys beat themselves last weekend with a bad huddle penalty that took back a big play that would have had them in the red zone at the Packers 20 yard-line. The Cowboys were in the red zone again and Dak threw a bad screen pass that was intercepted, so those two things don't happen and the Cowboys win that game by 6 to 14 points. Take Toronto (-11) over Phoenix (6 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 22)
This one should be a blowout! I'm having a great NBA season, much better than the Suns are, and I will keep it going with another strong week of picks. This game is a mismatch. The Suns are just 4-11 straight up over the last month. But one of those wins came at home against the Raptors. I think that Toronto is going to want to get revenge. The Raptors are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games against teams with a losing record, and this Toronto team has an excellent home-court advantage. This game is coming at the end of a three-game road trip for Phoenix. They play against the defending champions on Thursday, then they go to New York City on Saturday, and without rest they will have to head to Toronto on Sunday afternoon before flying home.
