Most NFL Preseason game results mean little to the teams involved, but there are a few contests each week where one side wants to play well and this looks to be one of those spots here. The New England Patriots played poorly in the first half of their first preseason game last week. The Patriots struggled early on, trailing 17-0 late into the first half before a big second half by their backups and reserves pulled out the victory late in the game. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick spoke about how bad his team looked early on, and knowing Belichick he will want to clean things up here in week two. New England also faces the team that beat them last year in the Super Bowl, so there should be a little extra incentive to play well here for some of the players and the fans too. This week I will be releasing one of my largest football wagers of the entire season: an 8-Unit College Football Futures Play. I have gone 7-1 on my last eight football futures rated 7.0 or higher. And over the course of the last 12 months I am 6-0 on my last six 8-Unit futures plays in all sports. I love this spot and I think that I have found a weak number to take advantage of. I don't necessarily think that this Browns number is weak. But I do think that it is beatable. Let's call this one the "Hard Knocks" effect. NFL Preseason is all about motivation. And I don't know if there is a more motivated team in the league than the Browns. Part of that has to do with the fact that they were a humiliating 0-16 last year. Part of it has to do with the fact that they are on "Hard Knocks". The players know that their every move is being chronicled, so that is going to give them that extra bit of motivation to play hard and play well. Add in the fact that their coaches are obviously taking this preseason very seriously, and I think the Browns are going to come to play on Friday. Further, this is their home opener. And I think that some crowd support and the energy in the stadium will keep this team playing hard for a full 60 minutes. Beyond that, I don't love this Bills roster. They played about as well as they could have against the Panthers and still lost. And I don't think that there is any way their quarterbacks will play as well this week. Last week they were facing Carolina's Cover-2. Now they will be going up against Gregg Williams' gung-ho, blitz-crazy defense. The Bills have issues on their offensive line and inexperienced QBs. That's a bad mix going up against a team that will bring as much pressure as the Browns. I can see this one somewhere around 24-16 for the home team. Combine that with the Nationals desperately needing a win to stay relevant in the NL East and the Cardinals starting Flaherty, who has been sensational for the Cards of late as well on the road and his last home start was not sharp giving up 4 runs in his last game against Colorado (so he came through with great starts on the road in his next 2 games), look for both pitchers to pitch well as this game likely goes under today. Minnesota and Detroit are not going to the playoffs, but they have played each other hard this season, with the Tigers holding a slight 5-4 edge. Kyle Gibson beat the Tigers his last time out, and I think he will be able to duplicate that effort and shut them down. Detroit has been one of the worst road teams in all of baseball, and I think they will continue to struggle in this one. Matthew Boyd will be pitching for Detroit, and he has not had much success when he pitches on the road this season. Boyd is 2-7 with a 5.60 ERA in 12 starts away from Detroit with batters hitting 70 points higher than when he pitches at home. I like Minnesota in this one. I am looking forward to the start of some real football! In two weeks I will have my first college football plays of the year. Then a week later I will have my first NFL selections of the season. I have posted 19 of 23 winning NFL years, and I am going to do it again this year. I like the Cowboys in this game. This team has gotten younger, and they don't have a lot of the issues that past Cowboys teams have had in the locker room. I think that is going to be a big benefit. The Cowboys first-team offense scored an easy touchdown in their limited action against the 49ers last week. They should play their first team for almost a full half in this game. Dallas outplayed the 49ers. But they lost that game because they gave up 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. I don't see that happening here. The Bengals were able to hold off the Bears. But they were at home in that one. I don't think Cincinnati will play as well on the road in this game. Bengals backup quarterback Matt Barkley did not play well. If he struggles against the Cowboys then this one should be a blowout. Dallas backup Cooper Rush was very good. He completed 15 of 23 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown. I think Rush will outplay Barkley in the second half, and Dallas will win this one by double-digits. Take 'Over' 40.5 Baltimore at Indianapolis (8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 20)

This is a primetime spot for both of these teams this preseason. Coach Harbaugh is on the hot seat for the Ravens, and even though this is a game that doesn't count in their final record, he will not want his Ravens showing a poor form. Look for Baltimore to try and put points on the board and to try and get people excited for their season. On the other sideline you have Frank Reich making his national TV coaching debut. Look for both teams to really try and get their offenses going early. Baltimore hit for 33 points in their first preseason game while the Colts went for 19. The Ravens won't get that number again, but both teams should be in the 20s. Don't be surprised at all to see this game reach the 30+ point mark in the first half. Take the 'over' here.
