Take 'Under' 62.0 Kent St. at Arizona St. (10 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 29)

I won my first college football play of the season last week with the Miami-Florida 'under'. I am going to have my first full card of the season this week, and I am looking to build on my +6,000 overall football run. In this play I like the 'under' between these teams. Arizona State is not a very high-scoring team. They scored more than 40 points only three times in 13 games last year. They scored 49 points in their opening game against UT-San Antonio but allowed only seven points. The Sun Devils lost their starting quarterback and their best receiver from last year, and I don't think they will be as explosive early. Kent State is not a high-scoring team at all. They didn't score more than 35 points once against FBS opponents last year and scored over 30 points only two times. The Golden Flashes went 'under' in five of their last seven games, and I think that this team is going to have a hard time moving the ball at ASU. The 'under' is 5-0 in Kent State's last five August games and is 6-2 in their last eight Thursday games. Take the 'under' in this one. Rutgers is coming off a disastrous 1-11 season, and at first glance there is no reason to trust them in a situation like this. However, this team actually showed some growth last year, particularly late in the season. They played Northwestern, Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan State all tough, and they finished the year on a 5-0 ATS run. This is now Chris Ash's fourth season. He is likely going to get fired at the end of the year. But at least going into the season he has the false hope of a guy that's coaching for his job. That means that if he gets the chance, he'll likely pour it on against an overmatched opponent. Last year Rutgers' one win came in the opener against Texas State, winning 35-7 as a 16-point favorite. I can see a similar result here. Massachusetts got kicked out of the MAC in 2016 for being so awful. They have a brand-new coach - in his first head coaching job - and a team with just eight starters back. This Minutemen team is completely and totally overmatched in this game, and I don't see how they will be able to compete at all, even against a horrid Rutgers program. This line has lurched up from -11 to -15.5, and there's good reason for that. I think the Scarlet Knights can win this one by at least 24 points. I think the wrong team is favored in this one. Utah State went 11-2 last year, and their two losses came on the road against two excellent programs (Michigan Stats and Boise State), each by only single digits. The Aggies have a big-time quarterback returning this year in junior Jordan Love. Wake Forest is a power five conference school, but they don't get great athletes overall as their overall recruiting ranks in the bottom 10% of teams of teams who play major college football. They were favored only twice last year in games against FBS teams and are just 4-8 against the spread their past five seasons in this role against D-1 schools. The Demon Deacons also don't have that big of a home-field edge, either, as evidenced by their 1-6 record against the number at home in 2018. Take Utah State plus the points. While I, like many, have reservations about coach Willie Taggert, the pedigree is in place for Florida State to be more consistent and have more discipline. Taggert has already credited this senior class from Tallahassee for wanting to win with effort and execution instead of just showing up like last season. As noted, Boise State is a threat, but they don't hit the big play and fail to cover, losing 28-20.
