NFL Betting Predictions: Week 8 Opening Line Report and Best Bets

There is no better way to improve your odds of profiting on NFL spreads than by securing closing line value. If we can secure a solid number now, and the line moves in our favor, even if it is only a single point, that can be the difference between winning and losing in the long run. Before we hop into the Week 8 picks, here are the biggest storylines from around the league from Week 7.
Doc’s Sports offers NFL expert picks for every game on our NFL predictions page
- The Bucs are back? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have won two of their last three games and are only one victory behind the Panthers in the NFC South after an 0-4 start. They picked up a crushing 43-13 victory over Carolina in Week 7, amassing 258 yards on the ground.
- Dolphins Win! Miami won their first game of the season to leave the Los Angeles Chargers as the only winless team at this stage of the year. They used a big first half to take a 21-7 lead into the break, including a touchdown with six seconds left in the first half. A playoff push feels unlikely, but many experts had the Dolphins going winless this year, which will not be the case.
- Houston is stunned: The Houston Texans were the biggest favorites of the week, but the Giants won outright as 10.5-point underdogs. Cam Skattebo ran for 124 yards after getting zero carries last week, while J.J. McCarthy looked fantastic in his first start for the team.
- Bengals storm back: Cincinnati was held off the scoreboard and faced a 13-0 halftime deficit against a Lamar-less Ravens. However, five straight touchdown drives to open up the half gave the Bengals a 35-13 victory over their AFC North rivals.
- North on top: The AFC and NFC North each feature four teams with a winning record, with the 5-2 Browns and 6-0 Vikings leading the way. Deshaun Watson led the Browns on another game-winning drive to edge out the Titans, while the Vikings took down the Colts 16-10.
- And then there was one: Speaking of Minnesota, they are the last undefeated team left standing this season. The San Francisco 49ers were upset 29-20 by the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7, while the Kansas City Chiefs laid a goose egg on Sunday night at the hands of Seattle.
- Philly in primetime? The Eagles season has fallen off a cliff after losing Jalen Hurts to injury while Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith also struggle to stay healthy. The Eagles got smashed by their NFC East rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, on Monday night, and now have a Sunday night tilt scheduled with the 1-4-1 Washington Commanders. Ouch.
Now that Week 7 is in the rearview mirror, let’s take a look at the Week 8 lines. There are a few games that stick out as having value at this stage of the week, and it is important to lock in these prices now before it is too late.
Game 1: Atlanta Falcons at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Opening Line: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-2.5)
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers looked great against the Panthers last week, but that doesn’t mean it is time to hop on the bandwagon. Carolina has been used to playing with the lead and was forced to change their game plan after going down early, while injuries in their secondary didn’t help either. The Buccaneers still have several ugly losses on their record, and Baker Mayfield is not the saving grace they need. The Bucs take on a red-hot Falcons offense with three wins in their last five games, and Atlanta will not go down easy. Their offense has scored at least 23 points in five straight since getting Michael Penix Jr. back from injury, and they just beat the previously undefeated 49ers. Atlanta’s offense is rolling, and their defense has started to make some of the plays we expect from them. Safety Jessie Bates III came up with the interception of the season last week, while the Falcons front was able to consistently generate pressure against Brock Purdy. The big battle will be with the Buccaneers run game, which has been one of the best this year but now faces a fourth-ranked Falcons run defense. When the Buccaneers find themselves behind the sticks more often than they are used to, Baker Mayfield will get too aggressive and the Falcons will make him pay. We are getting a few points of insurance with Atlanta on the spread, but this is a game they can honestly win outright.
Pick: Atlanta Falcons (+2.5)
Game 2: Los Angeles Chargers at Los Angeles Rams
Opening Line: Los Angeles Rams (-6.5)
Why is this spread under a touchdown? The preseason Super Bowl favorites haven’t looked great this year, but their offense got back on track last week against the Raiders. They now ‘host’ the winless Chargers, and this is a line we can absolutely get behind. The Chargers have looked miserable on offense as their offensive line continues to struggle, Justin Herbert has looked lost, their run game is non-existent, and Mike McDaniel can’t playcall his way out of this pinch. The optimism was high surrounding the Chargers heading into the year, but it has all come crashing down. Things are unlikely to get any easier against the Rams, who are desperate to win after a slow start. The Rams offense is loaded with weapons, as Puka Nacua, DeVante Adams, and a stacked tight end trio give Matthew Stafford plenty to aim at. They are second in yards per game this year, and have also given up the third-fewest yards on the defensive side of the ball. The Rams’ special teams have cost them wins, but it appears as though they have finally figured that out. As long as the Rams don’t shoot themselves in the foot, they will be able to build a double digit lead that the Chargers will be unable to recover from. With the spread under the crucial number of seven, this is a mandatory lock in at these odds.
Pick: Los Angeles Rams (-6.5)
Game 3: Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Commanders
Opening Line: Washington Commanders (-4.5)
The 1-4-1 Commanders are a decently sized favorite this week, which could be surprising. However, I think this spread isn’t even wide enough. Washington is coming off their bye week while the Eagles are on a short week having played on Monday, giving the Commanders a massive rest advantage. Washington has been struggling with lengthy injury reports all year, and their bye could not have come at a better time. While neither of these teams are in the playoff picture right now, there is still real optimism that Washington can make a playoff push with a healthy Jayden Daniels while the Eagles have lost Jalen Hurts for the season. Philadelphia has been bitten by the injury bug themselves with Saquon Barkley returning against Dallas last week, just to aggravate his injury, while DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks both sit on the sidelines. The Eagles offense is incredibly handcuffed, and it is hard to imagine them keeping pace in this one. Daniels is 12-0 in his career when his defense allows 23 points or fewer, and this looks like the exact matchup where he can improve on that record. The point spread isn’t enough to have me looking away, so we will lay the points with the Commanders in a crucial Sunday Night Football showdown.
Pick: Washington Commanders (-4.5)
Season Record: 7-14
