What are NBA Picks Against the Spread?

Most NBA bettors are going to make NBA picks against the spread. This is also known as NBA picks ATS. Sportsbooks give each NBA team a handicap of X amount of points. That means if books think the Lakers are 4 points better than the Celtics they will offer a line of Lakers -4. If a Doc's handicapper has reason to believe the Lakers are much more than 4 points better, his pick against the spread would be to take the Lakers -4. This is how all bets on the spread work unless bookmakers consider both teams to be evenly matched, in which case the line is a pick, AKA pick'em. At Doc's the majority of our NBA selections are against the spread. However, there can be outstanding value on betting NBA totals.

What are NBA Over/Under Picks?

The pace of the game, as well as which team dictates the pace, is a key factor when handicapping basketball games. When pace is an especially strong signal, it may dictate a pick on the over/under. An NBA over/under pick is another way of referring to a prediction on an NBA game point total. NBA total lines are usually well above 200 in today's NBA making them harder for the betting public to find value. For example, the 2004 Detroit Pistons team was very consistently within 5 points of the 90 they averaged. In today's NBA, greater scoring means greater variance. However, professional basketball handicappers can use this to their advantage as the sportsbooks also try to keep track of the higher scoring NBA totals. What are NBA Parlay Picks?

Parlay picks are sucker bets they say! Never bet and NBA parlay they say! Bettors that speak in these absolutes clearly haven't learned how to find value betting basketball. Sure, the payout on parlays at most sportsbooks have gone down to the point where putting two of your picks together for the sake of winning more is not a good investment. But what if your parlay picks could be made on the same game? That is called a correlated NBA parlay. Many sportsbooks offer the ability to make NBA bets against the spread and total in the same game. So if you have a great read on a game and expect one team to quit and fall behind, you may decide to make an NBA parlay prediction. At Doc's our experts will offer a free parlay pick in rare cases. It is not common because we need to find value for our customers on both lines before they move. If our parlay prediction is indeed on the same game, we need to confirm there is value regardless of the fact that you can't line shop the odds on a parlay. Both bets in a parlay must be made at the same sportsbook. If there is a free selection on the total over of -14 and under 200 it was offered knowing that those lines can be found at most Las Vegas sportsbooks and online.

What are NBA Playoff Predictions?

Once the regular season is over the NBA tends to resemble the national football league in many ways. Bettors have much more time to make their NBA playoff picks as teams travel to each other's arenas and rest between series. Making successful NBA playoff predictions is as much about when you bet as it is who you bet on. A series might not start for days. That means an NBA spread may move quite a few points especially as the public bets closer to the action. If we see value in a playoff prediction it will rely heavily on getting the line we are quoting in said NBA pick. In the words of the great Tony George, "We are betting numbers, not teams!" That may not be more relevant than when making picks on the NBA playoff games.

7-Unit Play Take LA Clippers -1.5 over Denver (10 p.m. EST, Tuesday April 29)
The Clippers have been the better team in this series and are a couple unlucky bounces from already being done with this series. Denver won Game 4 on a very lucky play with a missed shot at the buzzer and they had a player in the right spot to get a slam dunk at the buzzer. We think LA will come out more focused than ever for Game 5 after losing that one in heartbreaking fashion. Denver has some injuries piling up on their already thin roster and this team needs every role player to step up as this has pretty much been a one man show that has got them this far. The Clippers are a complete team and playing as well as any team not named the Thunder down the stretch of the season. We think they bring their A Game tonight and win this one comfortably.

Indiana has shown through four games (game two seems like a fluke) that they are the better team and will be moving on to face the Cavs in round two after tonight. The Bucks nightmare season will come to an end in Indiana this evening. Dame Lillard went down with a torn Achilles last game and will be out for the remainder of the season and most of next year. The aging superstar may be at the end of his career and the trade the brought him to the Bucks may be the end of the Giannis era as well. Indiana wins this one easy.

We thought about making this a step-out but we decided to hold off a bit and make it a 4* selection. Of course, we are 8-1 to start the NBA Playoffs which is incredible and on a 13-3 NBA Run for +5490 as we have posted a winning season in the NBA thus far. How do the Clippers not bounce-back here? You lose to Aaron Gordon who talked some smack to Harden - of course, Harden also gave a shove to Braun - and then you get trolled by the guy who talked the most on what is considered possibly the greatest winning bucket in a playoff game so now the Clippers will be all sorts of upset going back on the road here as they are tied 2-2. This is the type of game that Kawhai excels in, he is quiet, determined and he will be seething after that loss and with the Clippers on a solid bounce-back and the Nuggets on an emotional high, makes perfect sense to take a ticked off team on the road here. We will not missed with the points here and take the money-line.

Indiana has led at half in the last 2 games by 14 and 10 points. They have led by double digits at half in all but 1 game. The game they led by 10 at half they lost on the road at Milwaukee 2 games ago. With Lillard out and no scoring outside of Giannis for the Bucks, on the road, and Indy is smelling blood in the water. I clearly see them coming out focused off a 26 point beat down of the Bucks last game and seal the series tonight at home with a vastly better team and scoring options all over the floor.

Take the Milwaukee ATS as my top NBA pick for Tuesday night. This pick falls into one of my top NBA systems and I really like Milwaukee in this spot on the road here tonight. This is a huge bounce back spot for Milwaukee in what is a must win game for them and I do expect to see their best game of the playoffs here tonight especially after being embarrassed at home. Milwaukee has shot 48.4% as a team overall a season including 38.6% from beyond the arc which ranks first offensively in the NBA averaging 115 points per game. I do expect to see Milwaukee's best defensive play of the series here tonight and they have held opponents to shooting just 45.8% against them over all the season which ranks 5th defensively in the NBA. Detroit is three points from being up 3-1 in this series and the Game-1 loss was all about the Pistons being on the wrong end of a 21-0 run in the 4th quarter after leading by eight at the end of three quarters. I expect a down-to-the-wire contest tonight. Detroit’s a tough out with seven players averaging in double figures in points scored in this series and New York has no one to match-up with Cade Cunningham. The Knicks are off one-point and two-point wins in Detroit and NBA teams this time of year (April) have won just seven of 31 SU off two straight road wins by less than six points, including 0-2 in 2025. 7-Unit Play - [507] Los Angeles Clippers -125 [ML] over Denver Nuggets (04/29 | 10:00PM EST) The Clippers covered both games in Denver which included splitting them 1-1 SU. The market doesn't often make mistakes and this price has been sliding towards Los Angeles in each passing game. For example; they were +3 in Game 1, +1 in Game 2, and now small chalk in Game 5. We decided to take a look at situations where a team is favored on the road in Game 5 after being a dog in Game 1 and Game 2; and they are 63% SU for a +19.3% ROI. FWIW; 63% would relate to a -170 ML. We should also note that teams in this situation after losing Game 4 at home are perfect going 100% SU for a +90.9% ROI. The average score in those games has been 100.7 to 89.3! We also know some respect groups are moving on this side. Let's ride.

I am laying the points here. Giannis just doesn't have enough help to take down the Pacers here. Indiana smells blood in the water and they are not going to let up. The Pacers look fantastic on their home floor and they are going to run the Bucks out of the gym. Milwaukee just doesn't have the scoring punch to keep this within double-figures and the Pacers will move on to face the Cavs. Sorry Milwaukee but your season is over.

These two teams looked to be evenly matched as they each went 50-32 during the regular season and are tied at two games a piece. All that said I think the LA Clippers have looked like the better of these two teams during this series. The Clippers probably should have won game one and did win games two and three.

Take Los Angeles in this one.

The Detroit Pistons have went toe to toe with the New York Knicks in this series and I don't see any reason that would change here. Now add in the fact the Pistons are a very competitive group and I think they will fight like crazy in this must win spot this evening..

Indiana comes into this game leading the series 3-1. Indiana has shown dominance this entire series, with all 3 of their wins covering the spread. This was simply a bad matchup for Milwaukee in the first round. Milwaukee is beat with depth; Lillard has been hurt throughout the entire series, and it's all basically landed on Giannis. Indiana is a fast team on the break; they score a lot of points and move with an incredible tempo. I believe tonight marks the end of Milwaukee’s season.

6 Unit Play: Take #503 DET Pistons (+5.5) over New York Knicks (7:30p.m, Tuesday, April 29th)

We have game five here tonight in New York between the Detroit Pistons and the New York Knicks. The Knicks have the 3-1 lead in this series coming into this game tonight. The Knicks just won game four in Detroit 94-93 with a close score. A meltdown from the Pistons in that game. Now, they will have their season on the line tonight. Cunningham had 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in game four in that one-point loss to the Knicks. Jalen Brunson stepped up on the road, scoring 32 points in that win. Every game but the first game has been super close to each other. The Knicks won game one by 11 points. The last two games were decided by one possession. This game is going to be very similar to the last two. The Pistons appear to be the better team for three quarters and then forget how to finish games. We have seen these Pistons get outcoached late in games. Having the Knicks up in this series 3-1. The Pistons will give it everything they've got tonight with their season on the line. Trying to bring this game back to Detroit for game six. We will use these 5.5 points to our advantage. I think the pace of the Pistons from the start will be more superior than the Knicks here with a 3-1 lead in the series. Take the Detroit Pistons +5.5 over the New York Knicks tonight.

We have game five here tonight between the Orlando Magic and the Boston Celtics here tonight. The Celtics have a 3-1 lead coming into game five. These games have been extremely close in this series. The Magic have their season on the line here tonight. They know to continue this season, they’re going to have to score points to beat the Celtics at home. This total is under 200 points. This implies that even if each team manages to reach 100 points, it will still be a close game. If the Magic want to consider winning this game, they’re going to have to score over 100 points here tonight. The Celtics are looking to close out this series at home and not have to travel after this game back to Orlando. I think the oddsmakers set the wrong total for tonight's game. The Magic need to score here tonight to have a chance. The Celtics aren’t going to go down big. They aim to win this game at home.
