What are NBA Picks Against the Spread?

Most NBA bettors are going to make NBA picks against the spread. This is also known as NBA picks ATS. Sportsbooks give each NBA team a handicap of X amount of points. That means if books think the Lakers are 4 points better than the Celtics they will offer a line of Lakers -4. If a Doc's handicapper has reason to believe the Lakers are much more than 4 points better, his pick against the spread would be to take the Lakers -4. This is how all bets on the spread work unless bookmakers consider both teams to be evenly matched, in which case the line is a pick, AKA pick'em. At Doc's the majority of our NBA selections are against the spread. However, there can be outstanding value on betting NBA totals.

What are NBA Over/Under Picks?

The pace of the game, as well as which team dictates the pace, is a key factor when handicapping basketball games. When pace is an especially strong signal, it may dictate a pick on the over/under. An NBA over/under pick is another way of referring to a prediction on an NBA game point total. NBA total lines are usually well above 200 in today's NBA making them harder for the betting public to find value. For example, the 2004 Detroit Pistons team was very consistently within 5 points of the 90 they averaged. In today's NBA, greater scoring means greater variance. However, professional basketball handicappers can use this to their advantage as the sportsbooks also try to keep track of the higher scoring NBA totals. What are NBA Parlay Picks?

Parlay picks are sucker bets they say! Never bet and NBA parlay they say! Bettors that speak in these absolutes clearly haven't learned how to find value betting basketball. Sure, the payout on parlays at most sportsbooks have gone down to the point where putting two of your picks together for the sake of winning more is not a good investment. But what if your parlay picks could be made on the same game? That is called a correlated NBA parlay. Many sportsbooks offer the ability to make NBA bets against the spread and total in the same game. So if you have a great read on a game and expect one team to quit and fall behind, you may decide to make an NBA parlay prediction. At Doc's our experts will offer a free parlay pick in rare cases. It is not common because we need to find value for our customers on both lines before they move. If our parlay prediction is indeed on the same game, we need to confirm there is value regardless of the fact that you can't line shop the odds on a parlay. Both bets in a parlay must be made at the same sportsbook. If there is a free selection on the total over of -14 and under 200 it was offered knowing that those lines can be found at most Las Vegas sportsbooks and online.

What are NBA Playoff Predictions?

Once the regular season is over the NBA tends to resemble the national football league in many ways. Bettors have much more time to make their NBA playoff picks as teams travel to each other's arenas and rest between series. Making successful NBA playoff predictions is as much about when you bet as it is who you bet on. A series might not start for days. That means an NBA spread may move quite a few points especially as the public bets closer to the action. If we see value in a playoff prediction it will rely heavily on getting the line we are quoting in said NBA pick. In the words of the great Tony George, "We are betting numbers, not teams!" That may not be more relevant than when making picks on the NBA playoff games.

The Thunder have not been good ATS in this postseason after being one of the top ATS teams of history in the regular season. But the playoffs is a different game and opponents have risen up their level of game and we think the Pacers have a great chance to keep home court advantage in this series and win outright. Each game is its own entity, so the Pacers have the ability to put Game 2 behind them and play much better here, as we have seen in the postseason when they have before faced adversity.

Game 2 was slow start in first half but picked up huge 2nd half to get late over. Expect Indy to push the entire game this time and push way over in game 3. We have both teams going over 115 as the defenses struggle to slow down the great offenses. Take the Over in Game 3 in OKC/IND on Wednesday night.

Note, 7*MLB (7:10pm) and 7*WNBA (10pm) Selection today as we come off a great 7*WNBA Winner on the Atlanta Dream -5 yesterday over the Indiana Fever and on a great 3-0 MLB Run as well. Great +2900 in the NBA Playoffs currently and we absolutely love the Under here between these two teams. What you have here is an OKC team that rolls in having lost the first game of this series and giving up home court advantage and though they did cover and beat Indiana last game, they are definitely motivated here to get their home court advantage back. We believe Indiana will play much better defense at home, maybe get a few more calls at home and OKC will not have a let down here as they are well aware they have lost home court advantage coming in so they can ill afford to lose this game and we absolutely love this high quality public fade as this game likely goes under the posted total today.

The last game was a struggle to get to the 228.5 total but it landed on 230 and the Pacers could not have played worse. I had a 7 unit play out on that one for the Over.

OK City has failed to cover a spread on the road in the post season at 0-7, and one of the reasons is their defense does not travel well for whatever reason in the post season. Indiana has scored well at home and I expect them to open it up tonight and for OK City to counter punch as we all know they can. The Pacers last 2 home games they scored 125 and 130. The Thunders last 2 road games they allowed 126 and 143.

Take Oklahoma City ATS as my top NBA pick for Wednesday night. This pick falls into one of my top NBA systems and Oklahoma City is hands down the superior team in the series and I do expect them to take care of business on the road. Oklahoma City had a meltdown in the fourth quarter of the first game of this series and since then they have dominated and I do expect that to continue on the road here tonight. I expect Oklahoma City to step up defensively here tonight and they have held opponents to shooting just 43.5% against them overall this season including 34.3% from beyond the arc which ranks first defensively in the NBA holding opponents to just 107.3 points per game against them which ranks second defensively in the NBA. Opponents have shot 47% against Indiana overall the season which ranks 23rd defensively in the NBA with opponents averaging 114.9 points per game against them. I do expect Oklahoma City winning by at least 10 points. Play Oklahoma City ATS

It's not quite but virtually now or never for the Pacers if they wish to win this series - after all, they split in OKC. While they've struggled in Game-3's this postseason, they were up 2-0 in all three series. Tonight, there's some desperation and they're facing an OKC team that's 0-7 ATS on the playoff road. The Thunder are 4-3 SU on the road this postseason with the wins coming by less than four ppg. Indiana HC Rick Carlisle has made adjustments all postseason and in playoffs past and I'm betting he does the same tonight. Oklahoma City has controlled most of this series, and despite the change in venue I like them to continue to do the same thing. I am in favor of a high scoring affair tonight as Indiana should play well early in this game, which is the opposite of the first two, but the Thunder will match suit. OKC is just better at all facets of the game and will take a lot of wind out of the Pacer sails by winning and covering this road line.

We have game three starting here tonight in Indiana, where the Pacers look to take the lead in the series 2-1. The OKC Thunder got the best of the Pacers in game two. Can they keep that same attack here tonight on the road? This Pacers team is relentless with their hard-nosed defense. I believe we’re going to see some defense step up here tonight in game three. For the Pacers to have a shot at this game, they need to slow the pace of play down and play hard defense. That is exactly what I think will happen here tonight. I believe the total score will be lower due to the strong defense exhibited by both teams. The Pacers just need to slow down in transition. If they don’t, they’re going to be run out of the gym like in game two. I think we see the total of 228 total points go under here in game three.
