What are NBA Picks Against the Spread?

Most NBA bettors are going to make NBA picks against the spread. This is also known as NBA picks ATS. Sportsbooks give each NBA team a handicap of X amount of points. That means if books think the Lakers are 4 points better than the Celtics they will offer a line of Lakers -4. If a Doc's handicapper has reason to believe the Lakers are much more than 4 points better, his pick against the spread would be to take the Lakers -4. This is how all bets on the spread work unless bookmakers consider both teams to be evenly matched, in which case the line is a pick, AKA pick'em. At Doc's the majority of our NBA selections are against the spread. However, there can be outstanding value on betting NBA totals.

What are NBA Over/Under Picks?

The pace of the game, as well as which team dictates the pace, is a key factor when handicapping basketball games. When pace is an especially strong signal, it may dictate a pick on the over/under. An NBA over/under pick is another way of referring to a prediction on an NBA game point total. NBA total lines are usually well above 200 in today's NBA making them harder for the betting public to find value. For example, the 2004 Detroit Pistons team was very consistently within 5 points of the 90 they averaged. In today's NBA, greater scoring means greater variance. However, professional basketball handicappers can use this to their advantage as the sportsbooks also try to keep track of the higher scoring NBA totals. What are NBA Parlay Picks?

Parlay picks are sucker bets they say! Never bet and NBA parlay they say! Bettors that speak in these absolutes clearly haven't learned how to find value betting basketball. Sure, the payout on parlays at most sportsbooks have gone down to the point where putting two of your picks together for the sake of winning more is not a good investment. But what if your parlay picks could be made on the same game? That is called a correlated NBA parlay. Many sportsbooks offer the ability to make NBA bets against the spread and total in the same game. So if you have a great read on a game and expect one team to quit and fall behind, you may decide to make an NBA parlay prediction. At Doc's our experts will offer a free parlay pick in rare cases. It is not common because we need to find value for our customers on both lines before they move. If our parlay prediction is indeed on the same game, we need to confirm there is value regardless of the fact that you can't line shop the odds on a parlay. Both bets in a parlay must be made at the same sportsbook. If there is a free selection on the total over of -14 and under 200 it was offered knowing that those lines can be found at most Las Vegas sportsbooks and online.

What are NBA Playoff Predictions?

Once the regular season is over the NBA tends to resemble the national football league in many ways. Bettors have much more time to make their NBA playoff picks as teams travel to each other's arenas and rest between series. Making successful NBA playoff predictions is as much about when you bet as it is who you bet on. A series might not start for days. That means an NBA spread may move quite a few points especially as the public bets closer to the action. If we see value in a playoff prediction it will rely heavily on getting the line we are quoting in said NBA pick. In the words of the great Tony George, "We are betting numbers, not teams!" That may not be more relevant than when making picks on the NBA playoff games.

2-Unit Play Take Minnesota -6.5 over Orlando (3 p.m. EST, Saturday March 7)
Minnesota has been playing well lately and this team has been overvalued by the oddsmakers most of the season, so they have had some bad ATS results. But Orlando has been even worse, and Minnesota many times manages to score a cover against other bad ATS teams. We think that will be the case tonight. The Wolves enter on a five-game win streak and they have won their last three by 7 or more points. Orlando has been beating bad teams lately but when they go up against a quality team, they usually falter.
5-Unit Play Take Memphis +6.5 over LA Clippers (8 p.m. EST, Saturday March 7)
The Clippers played last night and were up 25 at one point against a Spurs team on a back-to-back, but then the lack of depth on this team showed up majorly and they lost the big lead and lost the game. Now they face a main rival who has won and covered three straight against them. The Grizzlies have covered in four straight games and they are rested with a couple days off. We think we will see their A Game tonight and we might sprinkle a little on the moneyline here.

I’m still kicking myself for not releasing a 7-Unit Play on Miami in their last game against Brooklyn. So this is a little bit of a make-up wager. Regardless, the Nets would make Erwin Rommel proud and they are catching a Pistons team that is likely to be pissed off after back-to-back losses. Detroit doesn’t have the No. 1 seed locked up by any stretch and they won’t give away a game here.

The Jazz have played much better recently — Utah is 3-0 ATS in its last three games (1-2 SU). The Bucks haven’t looked sharp in Giannis’s first two games back, getting blown out at home both times. Take the Jazz to cover the spread Saturday night.

The 76ers are off a win versus Utah and that was without Embiid and Edgecombe and Embiid is still out and Edgecombe likely to miss this one again too. That said, I like the Sixers here catching big points against the Hawks as this is also a triple-revenge game for Philly. Yes, they have lost all 3 games with Atlanta this season so this is a big-time payback game for the Sixers. I know Atlanta has won 5 straight games but the 4 teams they beat in this stretch all have losing records and, in fact, are now a combined 75 games under .500 on the season. The Sixers will be tough to put away here and these are generous points considering the teams the Hawks beat in their hot streak. 4* PHILADELPHIA +7

4-Unit Play. #520. Take Atlanta Hawks -7 over Phialdelphia 76ers (Saturday @ 7pm est)

Note, we have a 7*CBB and 7* Daily Prop Selection today. The Hawks are only 2 games back of the Sixers if you take a closer look the Hawks.are in the Playoffs right now and they can make a move as possibly as high as the 5th seed if they can make a run at it near the end of the 2nd season and with some help at the top, they can move even higher. The Hawks won by 10 points last time these two teams have met and Hawks have shockingly beat this team the last 8 times including winning 5 in a row coming in to this contest,. Kuminga is likely to not play once again today but that might make the Hawks even more focused coming in as note the Sixers barely got past the Jazz and have had some recent blowout losses and without Embiid today, they are really going to miss an inside presence and note the Hawks have great depth. now with the addition of McCollum, Risacher coming off the bench, Kispert, Landale and Gueye. Look for the Hawks to possibly win this by a wide margin today.

4-Unit Play: #521–522 Los Angeles/Memphis GAME TOTAL OVER 228.5-110 (Saturday, March 7, 2026, 8:10pm ET)

Take Los Angeles / Memphis GAME TOTAL OVER as my top NBA pick for Saturday night. This pick falls into one of my top NBA systems and I expect a very high scoring game here given the way that these two teams match up against each other. Memphis just gave up 122 points at home against Portland and in their second last game they gave up 133 points against Golden State and then 123 points against Sacramento. I do expect the Clippers to put up a big number here today and this is also a tough spot for them after playing at San Antonio yesterday. Opponents have shot 36.7% as a team against the Clippers from beyond the arc this season and I also expect Memphis to put up a big number here tonight. Play the OVER

Utah has covered three in a row while the Bucks have lost four straight, all by double digits, yet the books felt compelled to hang a big number on Milwaukee. Giannis is back and will play his third game since returning and should put up big numbers against a badly banged-up Utah squad. Those who’ve followed me know I like NBA favorites in this situation. 4-Unit Play - (524) Utah Jazz/Milwaukee Bucks UNDER 234.5 -110 (3/7 @ 8:00PM EST) There's not too much to add here in terms of narrative as this is a strict model play for us. The number is simply too high based on season profiles and market conditions. The Jazz are just brutal on the offensive end, and the Bucks haven't been much better.


4-Unit Play - (526) Golden State Warriors/Oklahoma City Thunder UNDER 219.5 -110 (3/7 @ 8:30PM EST) OKC have gone under in three-straight due to some stellar defense vs elite competition. We don't see that changing here vs. Golden State who have had their struggles on the offensive end recently. In fact, both teams have been a little 'cold' while leaning on their defense. Value on the under.

Detroit is coming off back-to-back losses for just the third time this year. The last time they lost two in a row they came back with a blowout win over the Lakers and the Pistons are 2-0 ATS this year after back-to-back SU losses. They beat Brooklyn 130-77 at home on Feb. 1 as a -14 favorite just like this and the Pistons have covered the spread eight straight times against the Nets with the last five SU wins all coming by 15+ points. The Nets are tanking. Take the Pistons.

Minnesota is just 2-5 their last 7 against the spread and overall this year they have cost their backers more than 10 units on the season. The Timberwolves comes into this game with an ugly 3-9 record their last 12 games when favored. I like decent teams in the NBA when they are priced as mid-sized underdogs and we have that here with Orlando.

4-Unit Play. Take #519 PHI 76ers (+7) Over ATL Hawks (7:40p.m, Saturday, March 7th)

The Hawks have won the past eight head-to-heads vs. the Sixers, so Philadelphia has revenge and would love to beat Atlanta in their own building here. Believe it or not, the Hawks do not play well at home, with a 14-16 home record, and Philly plays well on the road at 17-12 away from the City of Brotherly Love. The Hawks have won five in a row, including three blowout wins over the Wizards, Blazers, and Bucks, and we think they have a letdown here in their first home game after that long road trip as they are fat & happy back home, and we like the Sixers to come in and play hard.

2 Unit: NBA Take #517 BKN Nets (+14) over DET Pistons (-105) (6:00p.m, Saturday, March 7th)
Tonight, the Brooklyn Nets head to Detroit to face the Detroit Pistons, and +14 points is simply too many to pass up. Detroit may be the better team, but this number feels inflated. The Nets have been competitive in many games and tend to hang around even when they’re not winning outright. Getting two full touchdowns' worth of points gives plenty of cushion in a matchup that could easily tighten up late. Expect Brooklyn to keep this game within reach and stay inside the big number. Take the Nets +14 on the road tonight.
