There is a lot going on in this game, but much of it revolves around the respect that bettors, oddsmakers, and anyone related to college basketball has for Wichita State. They've been the best mid-major team in the country and one of the most successful teams, period, over the last two years. However, this team ain't those teams. They still have their stud backcourt of Ron Baker and Fred Van Vleet. And they should be adding former Kansas sharpshooter Conner Frankamp this week as well. But the fact is that Van Vleet has been injured all fall and we don't know how much we'll get from Frankamp, who has some rust to shake off. The bigger issue for the Shockers is the loss of Anton Grady, who was supposed to solidify the post for this group. If there is one area they cannot be shorthanded against Utah, it is the post. The Utes are a big, athletic team and they already have Top 60 wins over San Diego State and BYU. Wichita State has been a mess, losing all four of its games against Top 60 competition. Granted, they are at home here and that will be a HUGE advantage. But they aren't healthy and they aren't in any kind of a rhythm right now. They couldn't stop Utah on the interior when these teams played last year and I don't know that they'll be able to this time around. This play runs counter to one of my core betting systems in college hoops. But I also think that the number is going to open at 3.0 and be bet up. And if we can catch it around five points then I think those points will be gold in a game that I expect to come down to the final two minutes. Tennessee lit up the scoreboard last week against Jacksonville, scoring 42 points in route to their victory. After taking a tough Monday Night Football loss, the Redskins are going to bounce back with a nice outright victory as a small dog. The Bears have done a great job playing the underdog role themselves this season, but in the one game they were favored they lost outright to the San Francisco 49ers. I do like this Bears team and think that they would have been much, MUCH better had they not been crushed by injuries, but I don't like this matchup. I see the Redskins controlling the football, by running and keeping the Bears offense off the field. The loss to the 49ers took the wind out of the Bears sails a bit, and it will show on Sunday. Chicago is just 7-20 ATS in their last 20 home games and 3-9 ATS in their last 12 home games versus a team with a losing road record. The Redskins are 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings in Chicago and 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings overall. Take the dog here. Take #112 Cleveland (-1) over San Francisco (1 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 13)
Plug your nose here and take the Cleveland Browns in this one. The Browns come in losers of 7 straight games and are clearly at their lowest point of the season in the betting markets, but that can be a good signal to 'buy' on a team if there's a reason. In 5 of those past 7 games the Browns were going up against one of the better teams in the league. The other two defeats came against the Rams on the road in a game that the Browns couldn't overcome, losing an incredible 4 fumbles in the contest, but keep in mind that they out-gained St. Louis in yardage for the game. The other loss was a fluke loss at home on Monday Night Football against the Baltimore Ravens where the Browns couldn't handle the pressures of being a team expected to win and win easily. Cleveland again found a way to blow a game they probably should have won, losing on a blocked FG returned for a touchdown to end the game. The 49ers come into this one off a big upset win last week over the Chicago Bears. It was just the 4th win this season for San Francisco, but each time the Niners have won this year they've come back the following game only to lay a big egg, losing by an average of almost nearly 20 points per game in those three defeats. Going back to last season they are now 1-5 against the spread the following game after a straight up win. This won't be easy spot here either for the Pacific Time Zone 49ers having to play what amounts to a very early game here in Cleveland. Despite having won 4 games this season so far, the Niners have been the worst team in the NFL as they rank in the bottom 5 in both offense and defensive yards per game and who've lost by an average of over 14 points per game on the road this season. Take 'Over' 43.5 Oakland at Denver (4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 13)
This pick falls into one of my top NFL systems and I feel we are getting very good value with this total here Sunday. Five of the last six games played in Denver between these two teams have gone over the posted total, and the O/U is 13-4-1 for the Broncos in their last 18 games after allowing 14 points or less in their previous game. The O/U is 4-0 for Oakland in their last 4 road games when playing a team with a winning record at home and the O/U is 5-1 for the Raiders in their last 6 games against an AFC West opponent. The last two times the Broncos have held their opponent to under 11 points in the very next game they gave up 27 to Indianapolis and 23 to Cleveland. My point is that Oakland is much better offensively than both of those teams. Offensively, Oakland can put up points quickly and they have the 6th most TDs in the NFL this season. Opponents have averaged 26.2 ppg against Oakland this season, and I look for Denver to get their offense going this week against a terrible defense. I have this one as Denver 30, Oakland 24.
